Alienware Steam Machine Will Be Upgradeable After All

Alienware says owners of its Steam Machine will be able to update the hardware, but it won't be easy.

Remember when Alienware said that its Steam Machine won't be upgradeable and recommended that people who want a viable upgrade path should stick to the X51 PC? That was Tuesday [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131507-Alienware-Steam-Machines-Cant-Be-Upgraded]. But this is Thursday, and the company now says that it will be upgradeable after all, but to a more limited extent than conventional PCs.

"Enabling customers the opportunity to upgrade components has been a core tenet for Alienware since the company was founded, and that remains true today," Alienware boss Frank Azor told Eurogamer. "The Alienware Steam Machine announced at CES is designed to deliver a great gaming experience in the living room, and we will enable customers to upgrade components. Considering we've purposefully designed the Alienware Steam Machine to be smaller than the latest generation consoles, upgrading the internal components will not be as easy as compared to other platforms, such as the Alienware X51, but we will not prevent a customer from upgrading."

In reality, it's not that different from what he said originally; after all, amazing things can be done with a screwdriver and the right attitude. But upgradeable by mainstream users who aren't interested in a crash-course in electrical engineering is another matter entirely, and to be fair to Alienware and everyone else who makes these things, you can have a tiny form factor or you can have easy upgrades, but generally speaking you can't have both.

Azor reinforced that point by repeating that customers who want to be able to upgrade their hardware in the future should stick to a PC. "We feel we have multiple options for customers based on their individual needs," he said. "If a gamer wants more freedom to upgrade, we have the X51. If they would prefer a smaller, more console-like system, we will offer the Alienware Steam Machine."

The muggles that the Steam Machines are inevitably aimed at wouldnt know better anyway.

If there's one resource the planet Earth is not short of, it's humans with brains of questionable function.

So, Alienware stand to make a killing when this thing comes out next year... and the year after... and the year after... and the year after. Unless of course they make them as reliable as the average Alienware system and make the mark 1 360 look like a dream machine.

Exactly. Alienware uses the same tactics as Apple. Blast people with flashy marketing to get them to buy overpriced hardware that's nice and flashy. Steam machines confuse me. Why not just put a PC tower in your living room and have the freedom to upgrade and the functionality of a PC anyway?

For the same reason that people don't really do that often now-- PC towers don't really fit with your average living room motif. Thats one the idea behind these third party steam machine form factors, it enables a living room PC that fits in the TV stand. These instruments are targeted at the people that would be PC gaming, but game primarily from their couch, so if they can't get the new battlefield 4 on their couch on PC, they would just as soon buy a PS4.

I will be looking to obtain one of these specialty cases and building my own. I won't be buying an alienware. But not for battlefield 4.

So... Alienware's marketing push is the superiority of one of its machines... to one of its other machines?

I'm sure the X-51 is spiffy, and all, but do you really want to be pushing it to the exclusion of one of your own offerings?

I know dozens of console muggles that wanted a PC and learned how much Alienware sucks after their first Google search... Seriously, if someone buys an Alienware PC is not because hes a muggle, its because hes an idiot, an ignorant or worst...

THIS. :(
My Alienware PC is doing just fine. Thanks for the hyperbole.
OP: It would be suicide to not have it be upgradeable. Makes a little more sense now.

Probably the only thing stopping someone from upgrading things like the video card is the space limitations, and if Alienware was being extra stingy, the PSU's wattage. They better still be using all off the shelf parts. That's why I hate all these proprietary SFF OEM computers on the market. They're cramped and have bad cooling, the normally standard parts are made proprietary to fit in it, and them and their parts are just too expensive for the space they might save. Imacs and other all in ones can suck it. If my monitor goes out I'd rather buy a new one than have to carefully take apart the Imac's ridiculous construction and try to find the right part to fix it on ebay or parts site. I'm glad that the reasonably priced steam machines are coming out, but I'm building my own again when the time is right for me.

Another thing is I'm worried that guys like Alienware and those other rip offs will help continue the false image that PC gaming is still for those that bleed money. The Cyberpower and iBuyPower boxes seem like the only ones that are worth the money since you could start gaming on them then upgrade if you feel ready to try. But I got the feeling that the super marked up boxes will sell despite it being better for the buyers with that cash to go for full fledged ATX pc towers they could fit a huge video card(s) in.

If only we could figure out an ethical way to harness that resource, all energy problems would be solved overnight.

This is an alienware steambox.

People who are smart enough to upgrade will never buy one and will isntead build their own for half the price.
people who buy one are not smart enough to upgrade it.

What, because small form factor PCs haven't already existed for years? You can get a pretty high end gaming PC [http://3xs.scan.co.uk/configurator/small-form-factor-custom-gaming-pc-uk-nanugamer] that's hardly bigger than a console. If you're not looking for a high-end PC you can get one 1/10 the volume of a PS4 [http://3xs.scan.co.uk/configurator/3xs-nuc-n15].

As usual, none of the reasons given for Steam PCs being better than regular ones actually make any sense. There is no difference and they're not filling a new niche; it's a new OS that you can choose to get bundled with a new PC, and that's all there is to it.
