Report: Samsung "Galaxy Glass" Eyeware Reveal Set Later This Year

Samsung is reportedly set to unveil its "Galaxy Glass" eyeware at this year's IFA trade show in Berlin.

With Microsoft reportedly working on prototypes for internet-enabled glasses [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128949-Microsoft-Testing-Eyewear-Similar-to-Google-Glass] just in case Google Glass takes off, it seems Samsung will officially enter with its own contender before the year's up. According to a report from the Korea Times, unnamed Samsung officials have pegged the device as "Galaxy Glass," with the goal of launching the eyeware at this year's IFA fair set in Berlin this coming September at the earliest.

According to the Korea Intellectual Property Office, Samsung has already registered a patent for the device in the country and just like Google Glass, the eyeware will link a smartphone to display alerts, messages and other data on a transparent or translucent lens. "The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication. The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can't generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets," states the unnamed Samsung official.

If true, this won't really come as a surprise, since a device like Google Glass would fit snugly between Samsung's portfolio of smartphones, tablets, TVs and other electronic devices. Also, don't forget that Samsung has veered into wearable computing tech with its Galaxy Gear smartwatch which was unveiled at least year's IFA event.

Once companies start releasing internet-capable eyewear, let's hope it's as using it as a homemade porn machine [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131412-Googles-Smart-Contact-Lens-Is-a-HUD-For-Diabetics], which is almost an inevitability.

Google is almost as bad as Facebook with storing personal and private info, the future will be worse. Also watched a program where they had people wearing the google glasses and it linked up to Facebook so you can find strangers with facial recognition. Thing is people moan when companies get to possess of our personal/private information yet applaud when out comes technology which makes this worse.

I'm still not particularly interested in this new "Glass" technology. Just hurry up and release the damn Galaxy S5 already. My phone contract ran out and I'm waiting on that before getting a new one.

Also, I'm surprised Google didn't trademark the name Glass. Though you might say you can't trademark such a common word, I'd say I've seen worse.

I really hope this glasses stuff takes off. The google glass just seems so futuristic and cool. I'm glad that more than just Google is making them as well, since that competition should keep prices on the lower side of the scale.
Same! I can't wait to be in TeH Feuturz! :D Imagine answering calls and such without a phone. Only concern is the camera since that might lead to some people doing questionable things like snapping pics of people without their consent and such.

What I would like to see is a Google Glass Frame for those of us with poor eyesight. I know I can wear my contacts and the google glasses, but why not just cut the middleman out of the picture and let me have my glasses with google tech built right into it?

I was surprised at that "glass" thing too, though maybe the trademark is for Google Glass, the entire phrase. Who knows. I just don't get trademark law anymore, if the whole King showdown is any indication to go by.

PS: This is just my point of view, but if your phone is completely functional, you should stick with it. This rush for the new gadget, replacing devices in perfect state, is draining the world of resources and pollution the environment, even you recycle or dispose of the previous one correctly.

Good! The more the merrier, more devices means more options with models having different features because I am so getting some type of Google Glass like device. Yes some people think they are stupid, no, many people think its a gimmick that won't take off, no I don't care.

I want a HUD.

Link this to my the Smartwatch I am getting and I will be a badass linked to everything at once with all my data available. Lets just hope an Android fan nicks the Cortana voice phrases from their gadgets and makes an app so I can sideload them onto mine!.

I have had my current phone for many, many years now. And while it is still functional, it is extremely out of date. It's not like I'm going out and buying every new iPhone model every 6 months. My current phone has done its miles and it's about time I updated. I'm the kind of guy that updates out of necessity, whether it be my PC/Phone/Wardrobe, I get as much mileage out of my possessions as I can. If not for the environment, but because I prefer not to waste my money.

This, is pretty much how I feel on the matter. If everything from Dark Forces through to Fallout NV has taught me anything, it's that the hero has a HUD. I want my HUD. And your idea of linking it to a smart watch- genius. though I'm interested to see Razers offering on wearable PC's...

The thought of having everything linked through my own all powerful PAN just makes me feel excited for the possibilities! (I've recently been playing with NFC tags, and this is honestly just as exciting.)
