Thief Achievement Rewards Players For Taking Their Time

Earn the "Predatory Drive" achievement for taking 15 hours or longer to finish the game.

Stealth games are a different breed. A huge portion of the genre's draw is to take your time, soak in the atmosphere, and become an electronic voyeur. I vividly recall that tingly feeling of trespassing that I felt on my first exposure to Thief 2. While more modern installments in the genre try to be more flexible and slip in some action, the upcoming Thief reboot aims to keep things more or less traditional. Recently, gaming site Xbox Achievement recently got a hold of Thief's 'cheevo list, revealing that the game rewards players for taking the time to slow down and smell the shadows.

The "[a href=http://www.xboxachievements.com/game/thief/achievement/85714-Predatory-Drive.html]Predatory Drive[/a]" achievement earns you 30 Gamerscore for finishing the game in over 15 hours. It might be a nice encouragement for some players, as it can be tempting to take the easy way out in these games.

More recently, Dishonored withheld the good ending unless players behaved themselves and played non-violently, something our own [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/criticalintel/10911-The-Devil-and-Corvo-Attano]Robert Rath[/a] did a great job exploring. Even so, it was still possible to skip all the side missions and miss out on the wonderful exploration, resulting in a remarkably abbreviated game. It's easy to spoil a good stealth game with a lack of patience. Regardless, we'll see how Thief turns out when it launches on February 25th for the PC and current and last-gen consoles.

So... rush through the game, then leave the computer on overnight and during the day before finishing it? Or alter time on the computer like Stanley Parable?

Take your time with the missions, explore.

Don't rush it.

Looking at you, SpliterCell.

But seriously, I'm glad to see they take the stealth genre serious.
A lot of stealthy games lost there way.

SplinterCell in particular, the last 2 games were almost fullblown action schooters.
The takedown markers were rewards for playing aggressive and loud, not stealthy.

Maybe the attention span of the target audience has shrunk.
Even i must admit that i have less patience in games than i once did.

I liked how Hitman: blood money punisht aggressive gameplay.
You had to take care of the camara's if they saw you and withnesses made a composition sketch of you.
to name a few.
If the sketch became to good, you did run the risk of being recognized during missions.

I do hope there is enough to do in 15 hours.
So that you dont have to perch on a rooftop for 3 hours just to fill the time.
But you probably need to be doing that a lot any way.

Gameplay looks solid, not sure about the slowmotion though.
That seems to be in just about any these days.

As an achievement it doesnt make much sense since to achieve it you dont really need to do anything, wouldnt it be better to require something done that would add playtime up to the 15 hours? Like steal all the loot?

15 hours to complete the game is worth 30...what's that, a silver trophy? Something about that seems kind of short though. Maybe it's because of how decent the length of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's campaign was but 15 hours still sounds a bit short for a game with a stealth focus. Maybe there's a larger Trochieveo for taking longer to complete the game and maybe I'm just over-reacting in general...either way can't wait to read about speed runners beating the game in 4 hours or less come March (or possibly even February).

Nahhhh... IMO it's better this way. It's a fairly easy way to get an achievement and should be possible for all players who complete the game. Achievements are supposed to give the player a reason to play the game differently or try something new. Besides if it takes 15 hours to collect the loot vs. 15 hours to beat the game... what's the difference? Less skilled players will take longer to complete it and skilled players will be able to 100% in that time.

Getting this achivement will be easy. Alt tab and play Heartstone = profit.

With that said, it's rather a stupid achivement and hope that the game will be at least 15 hours long, else I will be disappointed.

Considering that most of the missions in the original Thief games took an hour and a half to two hours to finish and each game had at least fifteen missions (I think, I might have to check on that to be sure), calling 15 hours of gameplay taking your time really doesn't seem all that impressive to me. I've had run-throughs of Thief 2 that took upwards of 30 hours because I thoroughly explored every area in search of the Easter eggs and secrets. Although I think my longest run was my playthrough where I did no knock-outs and no being seen by guards. That one took forever, though I don't remember how long it was.

Heh. The captcha made me reenter it before I could post. The second captcha was, ironically, "no hassles."

Depending on play style, 15 hours shouldn't be a problem. Especially if you sit in the shadows watching patrol routes trying to ghost the levels. I think it would be more rewarding to see if players can ghost the entire game.

I still wish achievements would actually reward you with in game rewards, that to me feels like a reward onto itself than just a tiny non existent digital badge.

This is about the first really good bit of news ive heard about Thief 4. Maybe its not going to be an acrobatic, stealth-kill actionfest after all...
