Batman: Arkham Origins Dev Bypassing Patches In Order to Work on DLC

Warner Bros. Montreal has "no plans" to release another patch for Batman: Arkham Origins to fix bugs, since it's hard at work on DLC.

In news that might anger Batman: Arkham Origins players, the studio responsible for the game -- Warner Bros. Montreal -- has said that they have "no plans" to release further patches for the game to fix "minor" issues, but instead, is "working hard" on upcoming DLC. This was revealed by Arkham Origins community manager "Mercury" over on the official forums [http://community.wbgames.com/t5/Support/Patch-1-06-is-it-even-a-possibility/m-p/122949/highlight/true#M15908] where the following message was posted:

Hi all,

The team is currently working hard on the upcoming story DLC and there currently are no plans for releasing another patch to address the issues that have been reported on the forums.

If we do move forward with creating a new patch, it will try to address the progression blocking bugs for players, not the minor glitches that do not prevent one from continuing to play. The issues that are not progression blockers will unfortunately no longer be addressed.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused for some of you, and want to thank you for having been patient.

So, the studio admits there are bugs, but is working on DLC first and progression-stopping glitches might be tackled at some point in the future -- though we don't know when. However, for those annoyed at some of the game's technical issues that don't impede your progress, good luck coming to gripes with that; but hey, at least you'll have some single-player story DLC in its place.

Should gamers be worried that a studio is blatantly prioritizing DLC instead of first fixing the game that people already paid for? Hopefully, this is an isolated incident and other studios don't follow suit.

This is pretty disgusting. There are game breaking bugs that remain unfixed and blocking people from playing the game.

I'm serious, we are one step away from developers CHARGING for bug fixes. Capcom was halfway there. Who's gonna do it first so everyone else can follow? EA? Capcom?

Well that's a kick in the balls.

On the bright side that's one more dev/publisher combo for the blacklist!

Is there some new rule that every article must have a question at the end? Because the answer to this one is fairly obvious.

Anyway, as a massive fan of DLC this is just making me facepalm. You will sell more DLC with a working game, guys.

There is absolutely no justification for this kind of behavior if the company cares about their userbase. This is just another view as to why the games industry is a cesspool right now. It is frustrating to see developers and publishers asking why people hate them so much when the answer is so blatant and clear.

This is just completely moronic and they pretty much just shot themselves in the balls. Battlefield 4 had a shitty launch, but they actually decided to fix the game before trying to make more money from us. These dickwads don't even have the decency to that. I was hesitant on purchasing this game, but now I will not even consider it.

Also, how long has this game been released? I think at least six months ago and they still have glitches that won't let you continue. I bet they had plenty of patches for the multiplayer though! Disgusting.

Buying DLC for a game that you can't even finish? Sign me up!!!

Crap like this is what happens when you change developers.

My history with this game and why I don't want it (I loved the first two) go a long way back now.

First of all it was the fact that Rocksteady didn't make it, then they announced the multiplayer, then there were the season pass which was what made me 100% sure that this game would be something I picked up on a Steam sale at 50-75% rather than pre-order. Then the game was released with game breaking bugs which made me really happy that I dodged the bullet. Then they canceled DLC for the Wii U (which the customers had already paid for via season pass) and now they just abandon fixing the bugs altogether.

You guys were complaining that people didn't want to buy your Batman game simply because you weren't Rocksteady, at least in the future people will have plenty of other reasons not to buy your games and you have proven to us that you are in fact not Rocksteady.

This is actually kind of refreshing. It was nice of them to spend time fixing a released game then make DLC.

Most studios these days don't even finish games before releasing them and have DLC ready to go before the main 'game' goes up for preorder.

Did you read what the article said? They are going ahead with DLC BEFORE fixing their game. Sure, this is post launch DLC, but players are still dealing with issues that shouldn't have made it past QA testing. Issues that the developers aren't bothering to fix while they shove DLC at players and expect them to buy it.

Perhaps I should have been clearer in the original post. What I was referring to was the fact that they are being honest about it. That is all. It's inexcusable yes but still nice to see someone have the balls to come out in public and admit that is what they intend to do. that is the refreshing part.

It's always nice to have a nice big flashing "do not buy" sign on a developer. Kinda refreshing to not even have to think about it.

What is it about DC properties just sorta messing the bed all over the place, these past few years?

So, there's HUGE game breaking bugs in there....
and now they expect the consumer to pay them for more content while what's already out hasn't even been fixed yet?

Those are some priorities. Didn't even want to even out the vanilla game before milking the fans for more money?

This would definitely be a dangerous precedent, and as has already been said, charging for patches can't be far off.

I didn't like Arkham City as much as Asylum, but with this game... OH THIS GAME... They just took it way too far, to the point where the restricted skill tree, the messed up combat system and ALL DEM BUGS just made me watch a video on youtube to see if the story was anything worth playing instead of actually playing it... and it wasn't.

Well... uh, that's pretty forward of them...

I remember when the golden rule of PR was, "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all".

I mean, yeah, that's a really shitty business practice that they're employing there but I'm more shocked that they went right out and admitted it.

Holy balls, I hope paying for patches NEVER happen. If even an inkling of that comes true, I might stop playing core games or buy them 3-6 months after release.

It helps spark discussion in the forums.
