EVO 2014 Lineup - Smash Bros. Pending Nintendo's Approval

Six games have been confirmed for 2014's EVO tournament, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is still pending Nintendo's approval.

Last year's EVO fighting game tournament saw the surprise addition of Super Smash Bros. Melee, which, despite Nintendo initially website [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125837-Nintendo-Tried-to-Block-Evo-Streams].

Nintendo itself offered the following official statement regarding the event: "While we are engaged in preliminary discussions with Evo about their upcoming event in July, the potential role of any Nintendo software at this event is undetermined at this time."

Just for the record, the other six games that have been confirmed for the 2014 event are:

Ultra Street Fighter IV
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Killer Instinct
Injustice: Gods Among Us
King of Fighters XIII
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma

As previously announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127803-Evo-2014-Announced-Switches-To-Xbox-360], all of the games will be played on Xbox 360 instead of PS3, with the exception of Killer Instinct which will presumably be played on Xbox One, and BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, which is a PS3 exclusive.

As for Nintendo, while it is easy to chalk this up to just a standard Nintendo jerk move, there may be something else behind the scenes here. Recalling that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game is due out for Wii U and 3DS this year, what better place to debut it than the world's largest fighting game tournament?

But maybe that's too much to ask from Nintendo, who have historically had something against people who play its games competitively.

Intellectual Property legislation: restricting creative expression, depressing innovation, and harming consumers since forever.

I wonder when society writ large will realize that government grants of monopoly privilege serve to benefit special interests at the expense of everyone else, nevermind being blatantly immoral on it's face. Would that be expecting too much from people, you think?

I hope they get the game on EVO, because the list so far is pretty disappointing. I would love to see some Tekken, but sadly that community is pretty small. If they got smash, that would at least add some more variety.

Surprising they still got Injustice. I really liked they game, but I barely play it lately. I thought the community was pretty much done with it, but I was wrong.

I think it will be quite hard to play Blazblue:CP on the 360..... Y'know since it is PS3 exclusive.

I assume it will be on the PS3 then? Anyone got any info about this?

OT: So Smashbro might be absent this year. I can't really say that I care since I never saw Smashbros as a

competitive fighter. Though I can understand the disappointment if it does not get included.

What I don't get is how all these other tournaments (Apex being just one for example) can stream Smash... yet Evo always has an issue with it.

Also I don't think that the new Super Smash Bros. enters the equation as is alluded to in the post because it could never generate the numbers that Smash does. Smash has a high player count which a new game just couldn't match.

It is nice to imagine Sakurai pouting about people actually caring about winning in video games but I am sure that this is really just Nintendo Lawyers being Nintendo Lawyers.

Looks like Divekick, Nidhogg, etc didn't last, eh?

Melee? That's a few versions back, no?
Brawl has some designs in it to deliberately prevent highly competitive play (random tripping for example)

If the newest Smash game is at Evo as a main stage game, I will be quite upset. Nothing against Smash, though I'm not a fan myself, but Evo is a tournament, not a trade show to show off your newest wares. There are even jitters about having the new update for SF4 being the main game as opposed to AE2012. Now, that's not to say that new properties and titles don't get shown at Evo, but the games that are part of the main stage tournaments should be established titles with established players.

So, is there a reason why there's no Tekken Tag 2?
Historically, there hasn't been a large enough number of players who sign up to play Tekken at Evo (or at most tournaments where Tekken is being run. Also, Tekken is generally one of the fighting games with lower interest when it's being streamed.

So nintendo has it´s head stuck in it´s ass again.

Who the fuck wants free advertisement on a highly visible platform viewed directly by those most prone to buy and play your game?

Theyr drowning and still refuse any rescue ring tossed to em if it´s not in their favorite colour.
