Goat Simulator Heading to Steam's Green Pastures

Goat Simulator may have been born as a one-off joke, but its massive viral appeal has the developers milking it for all it's worth (in a good way).

Have you been waiting your whole life for a high-octane goat simulation sandbox? No? Well, you may want to check out the trailer for the upcoming Goat Simulator to find out just how wrong you are. The game, which began as a humble programming experiment, went viral when a short gameplay clip hit YouTube [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgTQglGvNUs]. The developer, Coffee Stain Studios, made it clear in the video's description that this wasn't going to be a real product, but our collective excitement couldn't be denied. Goat Simulator will arrive on Steam as a full-fledged title this spring.

The team at Coffee Stain Studios seems to be baffled at why exactly everybody wants this, but the demand is definitely there. "OKAY INTERNET YOU WIN," reads the description on the new trailer. "IT LOOKS LIKE GOAT SIMULATOR IS OUR NEXT IP."

Goat Simulator is inspired by sandbox skating gamers, except instead of skating, you're a goat. It makes perfect sense, really. Earn points by breaking things, doing flips, getting hit by cars... just about anything, from the looks of the trailer. Now that this project has the team's full attention, more new features are being added such as the ability to grab items with your tongue, so you can chase confused citizens as an axe-toting maniac goat.

Pre-orders are available now for $10 [http://www.goat-simulator.com/]. We'll report back when we know how many Game of the Year awards Goat Simulator has won.

Interesting idea. I might give this a go while having Miracle of Goats [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/miracle-of-sound/6955-Miracle-of-Goats] playing in the Steam Music overlay!

And before people start complaining about Greenlight Coffee Stain Studios got its start by developing Sanctum, which was a mod that was entered into Epic Games "Make Something Unreal" competition in 2009 and received several awards.

While I personally didn't like the way they went with parts of Sanctum 2 they are a half decent dev and may pick this up on release.

Plus you know, GOATS!

I know that people don't actually like this. Yet they'll buy it. Internet is strange that way. People will do almost anything to see how far something stupid and absurd can go, without realizing that the only reason it goes as far as it does is that they keep pretending to like it until they've conditioned themselves to believe that they actually do.

With the way the internet works, in a year from now the joke may as well be old and the sales not as great. Anyways, it sounds like fun. If there is a place for that cat simulator, there might be one for Goat Sim as well.
Make it a whole new genre: (Destructive) Animal Simulators! If it is successful they might be doing that bear simulator ("Bear, the game about being a bear in 20orso bear scenarios!") next!

The gameplay in the trailer kind of reminds me of The Amazing Frog, but with prettier pictures.

Hmmm, that's not really a compliment, is it?

Because I would actually like to see this. Just not as completely silly as the goat version.

Look I don't want to sound like an elitist ass, but really? A goat game? The gamer communities wants to be taken seriously, and then this shit comes around! Its literally a walking/talking troll that someone rode so deep into the ground a video-game popped out. It would be like Grumpy Cat: The game, where you are a cat. And you're grumpy. And its popular.
This game, to me, is the most desperate thing I've seen in a long time on video games. Hell, even that 'game' Bonetown was trying just a little less to be liked, to be that quirky game that thought more of itself then it should.

And before you get all over me, saying 'Its a video game. Loosen up and enjoy it!" NO ONE said that about Grand Theft Auto or The Last of Us. No one was saying don't get so hyped on Papers, Please because its just a game and it doesn't matter. This double standard is why the video game industry is struggling. When a good game comes out everyone tongue bathes it for months and months, declaring that finally video-games are a legit art form. But when something like Goat Simulator comes out, BOOM! Video games aren't meant to be taken seriously. Calm down, this is just stupid fun.

You can't have it both ways. Either games are artful, and Goat Simulator should never have been made, OR games are not art and The Last of Us is just a preachy, superfluous, expensive version of Goat Simulator.

Yeah that is the one I meant. At least from the (made up) cover it sounds interesting because the scenarios could be survival-based (forage, hunt, flee...) but it'd probably just end up being a game about a bear that is raiding dumpsters and then wrecking people's garden parties and living rooms (also entertaining but not as interesting).
But then again there might be more to the final goat sim game than just wrecking stuff senselessly.

If Goat Simulator looks a bit too arcade and casual for you, you *can* play as a goat in the ArmA2 armory mode, though the actual gameplay is a bit limited, and the head freelook.... dat neck.

That said I do look forward to seeing how Goat Simulator progresses, because it looks like a ton of hilarious fun.

It doesn't have to be all one or the other. There are games games are artsy, like ICO or Shadow of the Colossuss, and there are games that are more geared towards just having a good time, like this game. AFAIK, it's the same way in other media. Not everyone wants the same kind of experience all the time

I expect this game to be released incredibly buggy and almost fatally broken.

And it shall be glorious for it.

Lighten up Jensen. Some of us like spending our disposable income on things just to see how big a movement will get. That's probably more fun than the game itself.

Yes you can. You totally can. That's why games are made for a variety of genres by a variety of developers with a variety of budgets and in a variety of styles.

I mean, not every film is an art house film just because art house films exist, are they?

Well the amount of silly certainly makes it look fun to try, but I would never part with any sum of money to do so.

Um yes you can? Just because the medium is the same doesn't mean the creations are the same. It's like how you can have a comic by Garry Larson in a newspaper one day, and a sketch of the Mona Lisa in it the next. The comic is there for a completely different reason than the sketch is, but having one doesn't invalidate the other or make it any worse or better.
