Pokémon Animation Coming to Netflix March 1

Two seasons of the animated Pokémon television series and two animated movies will be available to Netflix subscribers in all regions starting March 1.

Step aside, House of Cards! Pokémon is coming to Netflix. Pokémon Company International announced a deal [http://www.pokemon.com/uk/pokemon-news/netflix-is-next-for-pokemon/] with Netflix today for the exclusive subscription video-on-demand rights for some animated Pokémon content. The new content will be available on March 1. The deal includes the very first season of the animated television show, Pokémon: Indigo League, which first introduced Ash, Pikachu, and that earworm of a theme song. Pokémon: Indigo League runs 80 episodes long, and first aired in the United States in 1998. Pokémon: Indigo League will be available to Netflix subscribers in the US, Canada, the UK, and Ireland. The deal also includes the 14th season of the television series, Pokémon: Black & White, which runs 48 episodes long. Pokémon: Black & White will be available to Netflix subscribers in all regions. Netflix will also add two Pokémon movies. Pokémon the Movie: Black - Victini and Reshiram and Pokémon the Movie: White - Victini and Zekrom will be available to all Netflix subscribers.

Pokémon Company International announced a separate deal [http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/pokemon-toons-coming-to-hulu-in-the-u-s-1201077879/] with Hulu in January. Eight episodes are available to stream for free on Hulu for viewers in the US, including episodes from Pokémon: Diamond & Pearl, Pokémon the Series: XY, and the Pokémon Origins animated special. Hulu Plus subscribers get access to more episodes, including all of season ten of the animated series (Pokémon: Diamond & Pearl) and will later get access to seasons 11 through 13. Hulu Plus subscribers can also stream the animated movie Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai.

Episodes of the Pokémon animated television series are also available to watch on the revamped official Pokémon website [http://www.pokemon.com/uk/pokemon-news/see-whats-new-on-pokemoncom/]. Only a subset of the series' 18 seasons are available, but a full catalog of with summaries of every episode is provided. Now, time to watch them all!

I was rewatching Pokemon a few months ago, and it's one of the childhood series that really didn't age as well. Ash was always kind of annoying but I didn't realise the animation could be so shaky and the types of plots it had.

Kim Possible is still incredible though

I cannot wait to relive my childhood by watching Pokemon when it was actually good and not just filler all the damn time.

The words "Pokémon" and "good" can't really be applied to the same sentence when talking about the anime.

OT: I wish they'd release it dubbed in different countries. As awful as it might have been, it might be worth it to rewatch the first 20 or so episodes, just for the nostalgia feels. And maybe riff it with my friends.

I think I lost interest when Team Rocket blasted off again for the 200:th time, or something. I could handle 199 times, but 200 was too much.

See, in Sweden we got the show from the US. So we got a Japanese show, that'd been reedited for American viewers, and then translated from American English to Swedish. So watching the English dub would at least get me a bit closer to the original Japanese.

On a different note: How do you determine what episodes are filler when it's not based on a manga? Do you just slap that etiquette on any episode that's boring or self-contained?

Pokemon: Indigo League?

I, uh... ya know, I will say without a doubt that it was the LEAST boring season of the show, but that doesn't make it the best. It was very cringy. But ya know, I think that's what gives it charm. I'll be re-watching it for nostalgia's sake. And the songs. (POKERAP, MOTHAFUCKAS)

Also, they couldn't even put in the first movie? Arguably the best one?

To be fair, a lot of the first season is filler. But it's good filler. Like, say, the Giant Pokemon Island episode, where all of Ash's Pokemon get separated from him and they have to find their way back to him. And all the episode really is is just all of Pokemon talking to each other. It may sound dull, but it's awesome.


It could be argued that some of the episodes aren't filler because they carry a tiny bit of plot relevance with 'em. But whatever.

Kinda bummed that it seems Advance won't be on there. I really enjoyed that season and its various characters, definitely one of those cases where they introduced some really engrossing characters and were making use of that new animation technology and whatnot. I also didn't follow it beyond the first gym or so and can't say I remember much of what happened, but I still hear there's a decent chunk of praise for Advance and Battle Frontier.

That aside, there's not enough care and commitment put into the show like there could be. For a long running show that could attempt to have the mass audience appeal but lack the engrossing plot of a shoujo or shounen serial, I always wonder what it would be like if it did get actual character development or something similar implemented into the show.

Awesome! I can relive my days memorizing that damn Pokerap (that I still know by heart) as well as laugh at the fact that both of those Pokemon movies on Netfix barely have any major differences besides which side the legendaries stick to...

Also, as much as want to say that Hulu got the better deal so far, the only thing that was good about the Black and White series was that it had a semi-decent Team Rocket "side-arc" that was better than the main Ash arc, in my opinion...
