Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare's DLC Will All be Free - Update

You won't have to pay a cent for any of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare's DLC.

Update: Clay has Tweeted that the company has "not announced any plans for microtransactions," in response to my question on whether microtransactions would be included in the game.

Last month, we heard that PopCap's recently-released third-person spin-off: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare would not have microtransactions (at launch) [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132426-PvZ-Garden-Warfare-Wont-Have-Micro-Transactions-At-Launch] and now, PopCap's console marketing lead Gary Clay has confirmed that all future DLC for the title will be free.

"Yes DLC will be free," said Clay, responding to a fan question over Twitter. "All free mate!" he added enthusiastically. Curiously, Clay did not speak about microtransactions, specifically, whether or not they will be eventually added and what their pricing will be like

Players and critics alike lamented Plants vs. Zombies 2's heavy use of paid microtransactions, it seems that PopCap is going out of its way to ensure the same fate does not befall its new title.

This is a very smart move from PopCap. Online shooters such as Battlefield and Call of Duty often experience a fracture in their communities when paid DLC map packs are released, as those who do not purchase the packs are unable to play together with those who do. Making the DLC free should ensure the player base remains united.

While PvZ: GW may be a Microsoft exclusive for now, PopCap Games producer Brian Lindley gave Sony fans a little hope when he said earlier that "We have nothing to announce at this point, but I always caveat that with the comment that we want to get this game in the hands of as many people as possible."

Who are you and what have you done with EA?!

Seriously though when I saw this game at E3 last year it absolutely REEKED of EA forcing Popcap to make a cash in game full of Micro transactions and DLC. Now that this has been said though... Did EA seriously not say anything and let Popcap make a Generally fun and silly game for the sake of making a fun and silly game?

I... Need to go test the laws of physics real quick. I wonder if I can fly now...

Whoa whoa whoa! Did EA Seriously just say "We won't charge you for DLC"?

Something must have happened to EA, I think we should take them to a Psych Ward or something...

OT: Really tempting, really makes me wanna get the game now. However, only my brother has an XBone, and although he shows interest in the game, he hasn't bought it, or considered buying it. If it where available elsewhere, though, then I would pick it up...

I choose to believe that EA was visited by 3 ghosts one night, the ghost of gaming past, gaming present, and gaming future, and that this caused EA to have a moment of painful introspection and realize the error of it's ways.

Gabe bless us, every one.

Well let's just be clear here, you are paying nearly full price for a game that has multiplayer only and fuck all content even on that end.
And from the way the unlocking grind works I'm pretty damn sure this was going to be a full on PvZ 2 "wallet or GTFO" ordeal, but then they noticed people are ready to put their heads on spikes if it goes on for much longer, could be EA actually got scared into allowing this to become a proper game... wouldn't hold my breath however.

I am loving the game so far, I am more than happy for free DLC.

Even if that means Microtransactions will be the funds behind it.

Does anyone else suspect they may have plans for microtransactions that they...have not announced? Seems like a pretty big loophole to leave.

Even if they do it wouldn't be a big deal (unless they spam ads for it in the middle of a match). The only thing they can charge for is sticker packs (or for stuff you unlock through sticker packs) which are easy to come by in the first place. 1 match almost guarantees the lowest tier and you can easily save up for a highest tier in a couple hours. There is also classic mode that only allows default characters (everything else is the same) so if you show up late to the party and are getting raped by snow peas you can play there. I just wish they allowed silly hats in that mode

Don't be so amazed, guys. This game is modelled pretty closely to Mass Effect 3's multiplayer as far as I can tell, and they managed free DLC there. But I can bet you that they're going to add in micro transactions for more random booster packs or whatever.

But wait till April when through a necessary update microtransactions appear just like how on PvsZ 2 microtransactions were okay at the beginning before updates made them worse and more necessary.
And how they added them to PVZ. And now there are adverts, too. At least with that, they didn't make the game stop being fun like PVZ2, but still.
