Twitch Plays Pokemon Weekly Update

Twitch has won eight badges, caught a Goldeen in the Master Ball, and is on its way to Pokemon Crystal's Indigo Plateau.

When we last reported on Twitch Plays Pokemon, they had somehow managed to successfuly complete Pokemon Red [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132587-Twitch-Plays-Pokemon-Somehow-Manages-to-Beat-The-Game-Update] and had moved on to Pokemon Crystal, the third game in the Generation II trilogy. A lot has happened since then, and the Twitch community has managed to gather up eight badges and is closing in on the Indigo Plateau, one of the first major challenges of the new game.

Twitch named the player character "AJDNNW" (or "A.J" for short) started his journey with a Totadile last Sunday. Totadile quickly evolved, and due to its repeated use of the "Leer" move, in which the animation entails him shooting lasers from his eyes, earned the nickname "Lazorgator".

More Pokemon were caught or obtained along the way, and as of writing, the team consists of a level 23 Shuckle (Shuckie) a level 47 Pidegot (Brian, a Monty Python reference), a level 32 Hoot Hoot (Dr. Hoot), a level 37 Espeon (AAAS RJ-I), a level 28 Dratini (KT), and, of course, Lazorgator, a level 56 Feraligatr.

This time around, only four Pokemon have been released from the PC box, a Sentret, a Togepi, a Wooper, and, once again, a Drowzee (poor Drowzee).

In total, 22 Pokemon have been caught. Unfortunately, while last time around Twitch managed to somehow use the game's singular Master Ball to catch Zapdos, a legendary Pokemon, they weren't so lucky this time around, using the ball on a lowly Goldeen (earning him the nickname "Master Goldeen").

Tune in to the stream below, and be sure to check in next week to see what these crazy guys are up to.

See, this is why science-fiction can never be completely successful at predicting the future. People in the 70's might have been able to preict Pokémon as a phenomenon, but not Twitch PLays Pokémon.

This is just like seeing anything else impressive a second time. It just isn't as cool as the first. When they played and beat Red it was awesome this, like Shancius said, just doesn't feel the same. I imagine that if they continue to 3rd gen after this, it will drop even further in players. The amount of memes from Red was insane, Crystal only has had a few, mostly focusing on Totadile and his almighty lazer eyes.

Good for them though powering through the game. They have a pretty impressive lineup as well.

Poor Master Ball. It didn't even last an hour in TPP's hands (I guess because of the different compartments and how for them the bag defaults to the Pokeball bag). And they fainted Suicune about 2 hours ago too, so there's that. Ah well. At least I can say I was around when the Wooper was released. No Bloody Sunday by any means, but it's like a disaster waiting to happen when you're in anarchy mode and go into the PC.

Hmmm... okay. Not really sure why this deserves any sort of weekly update. I mean, I can sort of see updates on the original playthrough but that's over and done with. I'd wager that pretty much anyone who would need/want updates of the current playthrough already knows what's going on and isn't coming to The Escapist to get up to speed.

How many people (at least among those who were alive) remember where they were during the Apollo 11 moon landing? Okay, cool. How many people remember where they were during the Apollo 12 landing, four months later? A lot less, I bet.

Half the fun was that TPP was unique. It wasn't just something to do on twitch, it was an outright phenomenon, and when it was over, it was over. Crystal just isn't the same.

Twitch has won all eight badges, and is on its way to the final challenge of Pokemon Crystal.
Final challenge, eh? I'm pretty sure a lot of people beg to differ.

P.S. Thanks

Well, it took about 3-4 weeks to complete Red, so yeah, having only used a week so far, we've still got plenty of time to run through Kanto again.

Also, Scary Face isn't the move that looks like lasers, that would be Leer.

Well, they are now about half-way done as they plan to indeed finish Mt. Silver (unlike Red, where they ended with the Pokemon League and didn't tackle the post-league content)

Just over two weeks with 16 days.

It's amazing to see how few people are watching this now. When Red was playing it was rare to see below 70,000 people playing/watching, but now we're under 10k on average.

Great to see Twitch Plays Pokemon still going strong, though it's a shame that it's dropping in popularity since its culmination at Red, especially since Gen 2 is my favorite of the Gens.

And while the memes are not as prevalent as they were in Gen 1... guys, do we REALLY need another Church of Helix or another following of the antichrist, Flareon? It was amusing the first time around (even if it got beaten to death faster than people claiming that the cake was a lie), but if we had a redo of that same phenomenon in Crystal, rest assured someone would be getting defenestrated.

Cna you stop embedding Twitch in the news messages and instead provide the link? There are multiple disadvantages with it.

Its background sounds in non-active tabs and is extremely annoying.
It eats your bandwitch as a monster.
The twitch player is a RAM hungry monster that hogs EMTIRE ram of this PC i got at work and everything else slows down to a craw till i close the tab.

These disadvantages does not exist with embed youtube since it dos not autoplay, and since we now got a rule to not post autoplay youtube videos, there should also be a rule to not post autoplay twitch videos.

We are getting weekly updates for this crap now? Can we please just let this fad die? I also feel cheated when I opened this news update and became a viewer of it for a split second because of the embedded stream.

Yeah, I was gonna say this, but I think you've summed it up better than I could have.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I've removed the twitch stream from the post, as multiple users have complained about it.

As entertaining as the new stream is, it just... doesn't feel the same. At max I've only seen about 16k people running it, a far cry from the MINIMUM 40k Pokemon red had. Probably why they haven't had so many releases and made such massive progress in such a short time, really.
I was watching it earlier this week and it had around 47k people playing it. It's still a lot of fun to watch on the second monitor as I grind away on an alt in WoW. I even occasionally input a command or three when it's pissing me off.
