Report: Titanfall 2 Publishing Deal Struck, Won't be Microsoft Exclusive

EA will reportedly publish Titanfall's sequel, which won't be exclusive to Microsoft platforms.

Respawn Entertainment's stand-out shooter Titanfall may still be hot off the presses, but talks of its sequel are reportedly already underway. According to a Polygon source [http://www.gamespot.com/articles/report-ea-secures-rights-to-titanfall-2/1100-6418404/], will not be exclusive to Microsoft platforms.

The source said that the option to publish Titanfall 2 was offered based on the impressive performance of the original. Official sales data is not yet available, but word is that Titanfall sold exceptionally well, and was even able to boost Xbox One sales. Previously, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said that while the original Titanfall will never make its way off Microsoft's platforms, future sequels might. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escapist-news-now/8355-Titanfall-Never-Coming-to-PS4]

Lead designer Vince Zampella also expressed his dismay [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129149-Respawns-Zampella-Tweets-Response-To-Titanfall-Exclusivity] at the original Titanfall being a Microsoft exclusive, stating that it was EA, and not Respawn's decision, and that the exclusivity deal was only for the first game in the series. It makes sense that Titanfall 2 would appear on the PS4, and possibly even a Nintendo platform.

When asked for comment, an EA Representative stated: "We do not comment on rumor or speculation. Right now all our focus is on supporting all the fans worldwide enjoying Titanfall."

We have reached out to Respawn Entertainment for comment.

There was no way Titanfall was going to stay exclusive, if Titanfall could sell 5 million on a console then that means that Microsoft would need to pay them nearly $120 million for exclusivity before it's worth EA's time. It's literally only because no-one had a console yet that it was exclusive this time.

The only exception to the rule last generation was Gears of War and I'm beginning to feel like Epic must have accidentally given the rights to the IP to Microsoft or something

Let this be a lesson to people who agree to exclusivity before knowing if the console they're publishing for is going to be popular or not.

I bet they're kicking themselves for not publishing for the PS4 now...

I could seriously care less about Titanfall, especially since I have a feeling that we'll be seeing the second game next year, the third game in 2016, the fourth in 2017, etc. And not a single one of them will do a damn thing different from the first game.

So basically nothing new in terms of shocking news but also the revelation that the Wii U is most likely never going to see TF II because unexplained future proofed reasons.

Well at least there's going to be a sequel to look forward to, that is if I'm allowed to love the game and the sequel?.

Why do people think the Xbox One isn't popular?

Did it sell as well as the PS4? No.

Did it still sell exceptionally well, yes.

I would be like saying the exact same thing about PS3 exclusives last generation...

Of course, seeing how well its selling EA will milk the shit out of this thing... Lets hope respawn remains untainted/somewhat in control further down the line

So does this mean titanfall will be another yearly thing like cod and bf? or is this an actual sequel type-thing?

I wouldn't say they are, I mean they are getting a sequel after all and I thought most Escapists were against "exclusives being held hostage", because technically the same would fall upon the PS4, it's got it's own exclusives after all like Xbone does, only seems fair.

Then again it's been proven that double standards exist within this new generation already.

I already figured this was gonna happen anyway. Basically I wouldn't be surprised if Titanfall 1, as I must now call it, will eventually be released on the PS4 as well. I remember quite a few people saying that it would never go on other systems, but then I just remembered what people said about Mass Effect, and look how that went. Really it's good that it's going on other systems. Would be nice if it were to come out on the Wii U too, but then again I already know Nintendo doesn't get 3rd Party support really and know that if I want the other third parties that other people are playing then I'll get another system, in this case a PS4 later, or just use my PC.

fixed that for you ^^

ot: I'm glad the sequels will get out to other platforms, the game is pretty fun so far. i'm just hoping they wait 2 years - rather than 1 - before releasing the next one. i'd rather see this one get good support for a couple of years rather than a rushed sequel. with 2 years, they might actually do some interesting changes or new ideas

By all accounts, this was an EA and Microsoft thing. Zampella, the head of Respawn had nothing to do with the deal, didn't know it was in the works, learned of it at the same time we did, and absolutely hated it. If he had his way, Titanfall would have been on the PS4 as well. Heard they were actually working on a PS4 version when they learned of the deal, though not sure if that is true or not.

Yeah, EA royally screwed them on it. I wouldn't be surprised if Zampella and Respawn demanded any sequels not be exclusive.

Then, I'll make a more accurate statement. I'll bet those guys are kicking themselves for not going multi-console, where they would've gotten way more money and no ire from people who didn't get a port in the first place. (I take that badly, myself.)

Yeah...EA burned the Nintendo bridge sometime last year...or the year before (I'm convinced they severed ties with Nintendo as soon as the first month's software sales report came in once the U releases). That being said though, I'm also not convinced that Titanfall won't eventually come out on the PS4, even if the original is bundled with the sequel. I would love to see Titanfall on the Wii U by the way...It just seems like EA will have to undergo a serious change in management before they make any kind of commitment to Nintendo again.

Did they say the Xbox one wasn't popular? No. He said agreeing to exclusivity well before the next console generation has even started isn't something people should really do.

And no, I actually doubt it sold as well to Microsoft as you think it did. Otherwise you wouldn't be seeing them practically giving the system away for free at every chance they get. You bother to watch tv any? It's hard to miss all the Gardner white commercials saying "Free Xbox Ones with all your purchases!".

And if we are being honest here, you'd have to be completely ignorant to make that ps3 claim. The biggest advantage Microsoft had with their console (and why everyone was happy to go with Xbox exclusivity) was the YEAR wide lead they had on sales. That's it. The pricing on the ps3 when it came out much later didn't help, but guess what? In the end ps3 has, last I saw the numbers, now outsold the 360.
Considering Microsofts refusal to fix the remaining issues with the Xbox One, I doubt they'll be closing that gap anytime soon unless they resort to giving the system away for free with every purchase at Walmarts.
Actually Steven Bogos' comparison to the PS3 was apt in a way but you were too busy flying into a nerd-rage and accusing people of being ignorant to see it. It took a whole generation for the PS3 to outsell the 360 and in case you have a case of selective memory, perhaps you didn't notice how many hi-fi and electronic stores were bundling free PS3's with the purchase of any Sony TV / product. But no, Sony would never resort to the Microsoft tactic of having commercials like "Free Xbox Ones with all your purchases!" as you so put it. They were also one of the cheapest Blu-ray players on the market, which helped bolster the sales. The vast majority of PS3 owning friends I have use it mainly for that purpose.
Also the PS3 started making inroads saleswise because people who already owned Xbox 360's bought them because they were at bargain prices (and as a Blu-ray player). I certainly did. What else are they going to do, buy a second 360?

Thinks back to RROD debarkle

Yes?

Otherwise you'e right about the PS3's shortfalls as a gaming system, it was one of the reasons why they decided to remove the OtherOS system as well. You can't see games for a system being used as part of a supercomputer.

Titanfall 2 on the Wii U? Oh fuck yes!

...

Don't look at me like that... At least I would honestly have more fun using the Gamepad to call in my titan... or even my friend's titans, in fact...

...

Yeah... I'll just be over here... living the impossible dream of that ever happening...
