Scarlett Johansson Wants Black Widow in a Title Role

Scarlett Johansson says that she and Marvel discuss a Black Widow-centric flick "all the time."

With the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, superhero fans will be seeing not just the latest chapter in Marvel's ongoing film universe, but also the third appearance of Scarlett Johansson's Natasha "Black Widow" Romanoff. That in mind, one has to wonder why this character, who is clearly an important part of the film universe, hasn't had her own movie yet. According to Johansson herself, it's a question that's also crossed her mind, as well as Marvel's.

"It's something we talk about all the time. Marvel is certainly listening, and working with them for several years now you see they respond to the audience demand for something like that," said Johansson in a recent interview. "There's certainly a lot of material to mine. I could certainly see her fitting into a great espionage story or something like that."

Johansson would go on to express her belief that a starring role for Black Widow could be a great opportunity for female superheroes who haven't been given as much attention from Hollywood as their male counterparts. "I think it would be exciting to be a part of a franchise or a standalone film where the female superhero used those opportunities as more than moments to stop, pause and look sexy, and actually have a lot of a real depth to the story," she said.

Just personally, we'd be inclined to agree. With the Marvel film universe already moving steadily toward a second Avengers film, it's well past time that the studio turned the limelight away from the superheroes and toward a superheroine. Heck, who knows, maybe if Marvel produced a successful Black Widow film, Warner Brothers might <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131610-Wonder-Woman-Actress-Inks-Three-Picture-Deal-with-Warner-Bros>hurry along the process of giving Wonder Woman a movie where's not third fiddle to Superman.

I like Scarlett (much more than Emma Watson or Jennifer Lawrence), mainly 'cos of this image.

She is right though, I want to see a female kicking ass like any of the guy super hero's ... fuck even a James Bond/mission impossible/XXX (not the porn)/Bourne/one of another million male power trips!

I want to see a woman save the day, dammit!

I probably would not see that movie. First, I don't think she is that good of an actress. Second, Black Widow is not that interesting of a character. I mean, I would probably rent it, but I have horrible flashbacks of the Electra movie, so I'm a bit biased. I also feel that she is kind of shoehorned into Avengers, to be honest. But, I'm all for it. Perhaps I'll eat my words and it will be awesome. The tricky part is that you will probably have a hard time fitting it into the current flow of the Marvel movies with big world shattering storylines.

pretty sure the avengers sort of blew her load. Would you even be able to do an origin story for Black Widow/Hawkeye with a straight face? They really needed to do that before the last movie teased a galactic level super villain intent on destroying all life in the universe.

All that being said, I hope they make it. They just... shouldn't spend too much money on it because it will not explode the way the avengers already has.

"important part of the film universe..." would be a bit of an overstatement. In the comics, she is a good character, but she is a secondary character at most. I might be wrong on this one, but other than a handful of standalone graphic novels and special editions; she has never been the protagonist of her own series, or had a series named after her, and most of her appearances are in team-based comics (like S.H.I.E.L.D. or The Avengers).

I think it would be interesting to see a Black Widow-centric movie (something like Salt could work), but they would have to work a lot to flesh out the character since, in the MCU so far, she is little more than eye-candy.

I'd watch it. Make it set with some sort of bigger team fight going on in the background while she works in the background. Spy movies are fun.

She was great in Avengers, but how much of that was due to all the other characters in it? Ive yet to see Winter Soldier so she could be really awesome in it. But until then she seems like a character that works better with others. If they had her as boss of a team, that would be good - her on her own, not sure if she could hold a movie based just on her. But then ive been really impressed with most of the Marvel movies, and not being that big into comics, if their is already a Black Widow comic then they would have stories there that could make a great movie.

Granted im sounding negative, but i liked her in Avengers. An regardless of my opinions, i would be interested in news regarding a BW movie.

Usually around this point I'd be yelling for a damn Hawkeye & Mockingbird film, but first I'd actually like to see a Hawkeye with some personality on the screen first.

Also, why is everybody clamoring for a blockbuster? I honestly feel like a series of 2-4 smaller/linked films with a Netflix/Amazon-only release would be more interesting, as it'd be a shift in pacing from the other solo movies which honestly are starting to feel kinda similar.

I would love to see this happen. Needs a really good script, though. Black Widow is much more than an action hero.

Does she actually have any super powers or is she just another person in fancy dress, like that guy with the bow & arrows?

Not exactly new, but if you want comic-style action with an awesome asskicking female character... I just watched RED 2 and absolutely loved it. Helen Mirren is amazing as an aging-but-still-badass assassin. Sure, it's campy as hell, but that's part of the fun.

Batman doesn't have any super powers either. I don't know why this is such a deal-breaker for people.

She's super-powered by any normal standard, despite not being up to Thor or Hulk standards (FWIW, Iron Man also has no powers and Captain America's powers aren't *that* far in advance of hers). She's also very smart, resourceful and cunning. I can't see any reason why she couldn't have her own movie where she demonstrates the value of those abilities.

No powers badass is what she is.

A spy movie with a marvel flavour sounds interesting. I thought Agents of shield was going to be this when it was announced.

Because when you're in THE SAME MOVIE as people with REAL superpowers, then you suck, no matter how much training you have.

She hasn't gotten her own movie yet, I'd think, because she's a supporting character who leaves no lasting impression once she's off the screen. A character that shallow shines in a supporting role but wilts in the solo spotlight.

Okay, I might have mixed my metaphors a little there, but you know what I mean. Frankly, she and Hawkeye don't really belong in the Avengers. They might stand out more getting spun off into a Secret Avengers team of low-power covert-ops people stopping supervillains behind the scenes. Or they should get bumped down to Agents of SHIELD cast members and turn that show from all right to flippin' awesome.

Please do this Marvel. I will go see it. I would love to see a female hero finally get her own movie and it turns out to be good.

I don't know about the movies, but in the comics she doesn't age. and not in the sense that most comic characters don't age, the soviets had a procedure done to stop her aging

I think shes almost 70 years old in the comics

And Iron Man's superpower is...? Oh, right.

I don't think she sucked at all. For an ensemble movie in which she was one of the two characters who hadn't had their own solo movie, I thought she stood out pretty well.

Only with very linear pure combat focused thinking. Honestly information gathering and persuasion are much better powers in most situations than super strength. Also a lot of superpowers and and a gun have the same end result and description when boiled down to the basic what they do.

Seen both red films a few times, both are decent flicks.

It's not the same though, Helen makes up 1 half of only 2 women in both films and the other woman isn't "RED" ... Helen is also surrounded by by guys, much like Black widow actually is!

The only film I can think of that fits the "woman saving the day" thing is Elektra.
