Captain America 3 Will Hit Theaters in 2016

Marvel.com has unveiled the release date for Captain America's next theatrical escapade.

Captain America's latest big-screen adventure [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9002-Captain-America-The-Winter-Soldier-Dark-and-Action-Packed] has only been in theaters for a few days, but Marvel is already talking about his next outing. The star-spangled hero's second sequel will hit theaters in 2016.

Marc Strom, an Associate Editor at Marvel.com, broke the news on the company's website: "Following the record-breaking premiere [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133491-Captain-America-Sequel-Could-Become-Biggest-April-Movie-Ever] of Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier this past weekend, the First Avenger will jump into his next big screen solo adventure in just a little more than two years on May 6, 2016!"

This will probably be the last time that Captain America suits up for a solo adventure, at least with Chris Evans wearing the costume. Last month, Evans told Variety that he plans to leave acting [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133277-Captain-Americas-Chris-Evans-Ready-to-Leave-Acting-for-Directing] when his contract with Marvel expires. "If I'm acting at all, it's going to be under Marvel contract, or I'm going to be directing," he says. "I can't see myself pursuing acting strictly outside of what I'm contractually obligated to do."

It'll be sad to see Evans walk away from the role, but Marvel has a handful of movies to make before his contract expires. Evans originally signed a six-movie contract, which means that Captain America will appear in at least one more film after Avengers: Age of Ultron [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133185-Leaked-Avengers-Age-of-Ultron-Photos-From-Italy-Assemble-Online] is released next year.

So, Captain America fans will continue to get their shield-throwing fix until some time in 2017.

Also, if you haven't seen Movie Bob's Captain America: The Winter Soldier review [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9002-Captain-America-The-Winter-Soldier-Dark-and-Action-Packed], you probably should.

I've seen a lot of people speculate that the MCU might go down the same route as the comics and kill off Steve after a civil war story line.

If that happens, it will have to happen in Avengers 3, meaning phase 3, so post avengers, would have to contain the civil war story.

This would likely mean Iron Man would appear in a film where he isn't the titular character.

It's interesting to see how soon after Avengers they're doing this.

So many good actors "leaving acting" soon.
First it was announced that Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon) was ending his career after Game of Thrones and now Chris is departing the path. Its a shame really.

*SOME* Spoilers below (especially towards the end)

I suspect that Chris Evans is trying to leverage more money from Disney/Marvel. His big problem up until this last movie was handling the choreography for Cap, and I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to turn out some great fight scenes here. With those kinds of problems settled, and a huge blockbuster, I'd actually be kind of surprised if he wasn't angling for more money on some level. He's under contract for an approved on fee, and probably hopes that by getting people to basically beg him not to quit, he can then use that to pressure the executives for s better deal on his next contract.

That said if they do replace him, I suspect they will just switch actors like they did with "The Hulk" and Rhodey. He's good in the role, but like "James Bond" I think it's one that could be carried by more than one actor if push came to shove.

There are also other options involved in the entire thing as well. They can always replace him with John Walker, or do a reverse retcon and say have it revealed that this version of Captain America was never really Captain America and have the real one show up, with some of the stuff we saw in the first movie simply being implanted memories based on the real guy (but the story still standing).

I'll be honest "Winter Soldier" was good, but it did have some "WTF" moments, especially in the context of the universe. I mean I can get behind how "no, we do not want a rogue group of Nazi Scientists to control a bunch of satellite guided sub-orbital death platforms that are going to execute everyone the Nazis don't like with pinpoint accuracy", but when Captain America of all people insists that we need to have these things all destroy each other as opposed to just salvaging them (like Nick Fury wanted) it's a little questionable. To put it into context your looking at a weapon that can resolve a lot of problems without collateral damage if used right, and perhaps most importantly unlike real life this is a world where we already had an alien invasion, not to mention the whole conspiracy we've seen in the SHIELD TV series that is creating it's own armies of super-beings (or trying to) and whatever. It just wasn't quite right.

They could always say that this version of Cap was some kind of clone (the real one is still frozen), and was malfunctioning, which is why he made certain, questionable, choices. Him being under alien/villainous influence is another possibility because there are after all groups that probably wouldn't want to have to deal with SHIELD or an earth prepared to fight back with things like those new Helicarriers.

An odd bit of irony would be if they were to say there never was a "Steve Rogers", that was a false name created by the government, and the REAL Captain America was named William Burnside. Bucky's slow recognition of Steve being in part because he remembered the real Cap, although he had mission-related data implanted also saying this guy was Cap. I mean given how alternate they've already gotten with some things, that could be... amusing.

Ideally though I'd prefer they just keep the current Cap (he's perfect) and say have Iron Man wind up putting his boot up Cap's butt at some point for being an idiot with demanding the Helicarriers needed to be destroyed. They don't even need to do a full Civil War (though there are seeds for it). At some point while Ultron is wasting everything with his robot bodies having someone point out "Gee, wouldn't it be nice if we had SHIELD and a bunch of Helicarriers with precision weapons to back us up right now and kill some of these bloody robots with weapons that wouldn't also decimate the surrounding city....". Of course at the same time getting rid of the Helicarriers works for the plot because you know... it explains why they need super heroes to get into street fights instead of just having some dude in a suit calling down strikes. :)

**spolier alert as well**

@therumancer

There is no more SHIELD. It's gone by the end of the movie. Cap was right in taking them down as they would be still in the hands of Hydra one way or another. Hydra is still active and in control of a lot of resources. Giving them any chance at access to those carriers would be stupid.

Re: OP. Cap dead in 3, with Bucky taking up the mantle afterwards. Those that know the comic have a pretty good idea where they are going. But who knows?

They'll probably kill him off and replace him with Bucky, then resurrect Steve with a different actor down the line. Hoping that fans will be so happy to have the character back they won't mind the change in actor.

The one I'm interested in seeing them handle replacing is Robert Downey Jr. though. That will be the biggest test to how much people can accept the same character with a different actor. RDJ was the first (and arguably the biggest) one who was already an established "name" actor. He's the one who got a lot of non-comics fans interested in the Marvel Movies, and Iron Man may still be the most prominent and popular of the heroes.

I cant see them doing a Civil War storyline any time soon. They just don't have enough characters and history yet. For there to really be a need for a Super Hero registration, there'd need to be dozens more than what has been seen, or what will be seen between now and Avengers 3.
They could still kill Steve off, especially considering Sebastian Stan, the actor who plays Bucky Barnes, has signed on for nine movies. So they could totally kill Steve, and have the mantle pass on to Bucky.
It's also worth noting that at the moment, none of the Marvel movie superheroes even HAVE secret identities, with the possible exception of Hawkeye (and that's more of a secret existence than a secret identity, in that he's not exactly publicly known in-universe). And giving up secret identities was one of the big arguments against registration in the Civil War storyline.

It legitimately makes me sad when I hear news of any of these marvel actors leaving their roles at any point. RDJ, now Chris Evans, At this point I can't picture anyone else in their playing their parts. I try to get over it by imagining it as when a favorite artist leaves a title and is replaced by another. Approaching it like the James Bond films makes sense too.

The idea of replacing Cap with Bucky really doesn't bother me, it turned out great in the comics. I don't even mind Iron Man being out of the films soon, they are almost in a position where Tony Stark could logically throw in the towel, even more true after what he does in Age of Ultron. There are so many untapped heroes at this point, that nobody really needs to worry if some of the initial ones go away for a while. They WILL come back eventually, we all know how actors love to reprise roles 10-20 years down the line.

Making Cap 3 a semi-Civil War storyline could be awesome but Marvel will have to do a lot to create enough heroes to fuel such a project, that being said they'll have Daredevil, Doc Strange and a few others by then, not to mention what Shield can manage to drum up.

This... isn't really news, is it? I mean, didn't they announced this a month ago?

Also, Chris has one more movie after Cap 3 on his contract, so expect to see him in Avengers 3.

While I definitely understand the feeling, I think it's just awesome that we were able to see a win streak like this in the first place. Chris Evens is pretty epic as captain america, but I don't want them two over do it, and maybe 6 movies is just the right amount.

Also, with Jack Gleeson too, this is such an epic role, and maybe he'll come back when there is the right role later, but I'm not too sad. Think about the population of good child actors in Hollywood. It went from zero to however many child actors are in game of thrones!

Captain America 3
What we think will happen: Cap "dies"; Bucky "takes over"
What may probably happen: Plot twists abound; almost no one sees it coming

Yeah... I have a feeling this movie, alongside the others post-first Avengers movies, would subvert what we think is going to happen one way or another...

The fact that the next Captain America movie will go up against the Superman/Batman movie DC/WB is trying to get out the door is going to be an interesting box office weekend. Both sides will have to bring their A-game if one is going to come out the winner. And, given the fact that DC/WB still have their collective heads stuffed up their asses at this time, my money is on Marvel Studios and Cap 3.
