Resident Evil 2 Fan Remakes Playable Police Station

Rod Lima used assets from Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles to create a revamped version of the the iconic police station from Resident Evil 2.

The Resident Evil series as a whole has some definite high points. Some, for instance, would point to Resident Evil 4 as the series' high water mark. Otherwise meanwhile, might go back a bit further to the GameCube's much lauded Resident Evil remake. For me, however, the answer has and likely always will be Resident Evil 2. I unabashedly adore that game and consider it to be a pretty much perfect combination of pacing, story, atmosphere and action.

You can perhaps understand my interest, in turn, in recent footage of a remade segment from Resident Evil 2. The video in question was created by YouTube user Rod Lima who, using the Unreal Development Kit and assets from the Wii rail shooter Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles fashioned a higher resolution version of Resident Evil 2's police station utilizing a movement and shooting scheme similar to Resident Evil 4. This footage joins a <a href=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5fm8z5RqG0>similar video released back in February where Lima showcased a revamped version of Resident Evil 2's starting area. All of this said, while many fans would probably kill for a chance to try a finished edition of Lima's take on the game, he's since affirmed that a completed version is unlikely to happen.

"I'm not planning on do a Resident Evil 2 remake," he said. "I made this only to see some codes actually working. And as the result was good, I decided to do a video."

Perhaps it's for the best. While I loved watching Lima's videos and seeing a shinier version of my old favorite in action, I have to admit that there were niggling things about his take on it that bugged me. The Resident Evil 4 style combat, for instance, took away a lot of the horror atmosphere that the original's fixed camera angles helped to fashion. But maybe that's just me. What did you think of Rod Lima's Resident Evil 2 videos and if the game were remade, how would you like it done?

Cute, but the RE4 combat hardly works well in the narrow corridors of the police station. Claire's character model takes up nearly the entire view of the hallways.

If Capcom were to ever do a remake of RE2, it would have to be in the style REmake. If only for the sake of maximizing the nostalgia. Not that they ever will, but a guy can dream.

I disagree. Have you played Revelations? The hallways are just as cramped as RE2 with the same style as RE4.

Anyway, neat stuff.

I only played the demo, but I didn't care for it.

There's more to it though. You play RE2 with RE4 controls, and you'd be able to just blast your way through the game with little effort. Which means they'd have to increase the amount of enemies, which means nearly every area would be packed with (running) zombies, which means losing the quiet atmosphere that made the police station so iconic.

That's pretty neat, but of course he won't do a full remake. It would either get shut down faster than you can shout "You suck Capcom!" or when it's almost ready, giving you plenty of time to shout "You suck Capcom!"

Godammit Capcom just do REmake 2 already.

I've always felt that the best moments for Leon were in the 2nd Resident Evil. Once RE4 came around he felt way too much like an action hero compared to a survivor, which is the character type that the original RE games focused on. It's nice to see a fan remake a bit of the 2nd title.

As long as you go from scratch to completion with zero exposure, releasing it literally when it's finished with only a single well hidden credit or none at all (perhaps just a "fuck you" to Capcom) then it should be alright, right?

I would love for Capcom to release Resident Evil 2 like they did the REmake.
I'd buy a console for it.
And if they give the same treatment to 3 and Veronica I'd probably die from joy.

I loved the the video but the RE 4 movement and combat was a bit of a turn off.

I want it so much.

Im with you, stew, on RE2 being the best. I had fun with RE4, but i've never gone back to replay it. I instead replay REzero and Re2 on the wii-- thats the most activity the wii gets!

As with a befuddled sheep above me, there are certain nostalgia remakes that Nintendo could push that would keep me coming back to nintendo consoles despite being a PC user.

An RE2 and RE1 remake like this though, I'd be in for that. Both of those games were more about the pacing and atmosphere, somthing thats hard to find in recent entrants to the series.

Never in any other game did I find a key and opened the next area WITH DREAD of what was behind the next fucking god-awful door opening animation.

Especially when Mr. X was involved. Nemesis has nothing on Mr. X.

Apparently not a lot of folks have heard of this http://www.invadergames.eu/site/games/development/resident-evil-2-reborn-en/, which is supposed to go into an open alpha tomorrow.

Rewatching this video reminded me of my old quibble with RE. 2 was the first one I played through completely and loved it but I remember the fixed camera angles obscuring enemies just out of shot that would blunder into view and give you a damn near heart attack. Which is fine, but then you consider that your character was facing that direction the entire time it lessens the impact somewhat.

I would be up for a remake with RE4/5 style controls, they could still make it tense just by decreasing the amount of ammo on show for a start.

That's a good point. Like how the gameplay of Twin Snakes made boss encounters in Metal Gear Solid much easier. Could always implement two camera control methods maybe. Classic RE and RE4 style.
