Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Renewed For Second Season

Marvel Studios' TV heroes will live to fight another day

It's officially Fall TV Season Planning Time, and ABC didn't waste any time in confirming that it plans to stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe spin-off business. The network has renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., just a few days shy of one week before the series reaches its first season finale.

The series, which spun off from the events of The Avengers, follows the adventures of an elite team of agents from the Marvel Universe spy agency as they traverse the globe investigating threats from alien invaders, super-criminals and other sinister sources. Clark Gregg leads the team as Agent Phil Coulson, whose mysterious backstory (he was killed during The Avengers but somehow restored to life in secret) formed the basis for much of the first season's story arc. Chloe Bennett, Ming-Na Wen, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Brett Dalton were also part of the original regular cast.

Agents had one of the most-watched pilots of last year, but faced rocky ratings and heavy criticism for much of its initial run. However, a major upheaval to the series' status quo in brought about by the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was widely seen as having been a major course correction.

At this time, no story or casting details for Season 2 have been released. In addition, ABC also ordered the Marvel prequel series Agent Carter, which will be set during the early days of S.H.I.E.L.D. and follow the adventures of Haley Atwell's character from Captain America: The First Avenger.

You know, with the cat at out of the bag, I'm hoping to see some more comic villains in the next season, specifically:

I want to see some HYDRA members, in either series. Like since there are two main HYDRA leaders left: Madame Hydra and Baron Zemo, it would be nice to see them in this series. Also, I kind of want to see the BAD girls and the serpent society as well.

I sort of want some payoffs from the first few episodes. We had a great arc with Hydra, but we don't know about that "Freeze" guy and Bob mentioned something about villain with gravity powers?

I just hope that Good Ward doesn't comes back.

In hindsight, you can see why most of series one wasn't that good, they were waiting for Winter Soldier's events to happen.

While I haven't watched any more episode since episode 1, how can there be another season after what happened in Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

I have to admit that #HeilHydra pulled this one back, I find the continuing adventures of Bill Paxton and Evil Ward to be strangely compelling.

Better FX budget is seriously required, especially for Deathlok's scenes. He currently just looks so camp and low budget, I can't take him seriously. Kill Ward off, character is boring and the guy can't act. Flesh out Fitz and Simmons more past scientist nerds stuck in the friend zone.

Really interested to see what role Raina ends up playing, she's got a cool presence.

Also, better dialogue would be nice. I'm all for marvel universe references and fan lip-service, but I really wish they'd meld these in more seamlessly. Some of the dialogue is just so ham-fisted and cringe worthy. While the show will never be 'realistic' per say, I felt the episodes with genuine emotion and momentum to them were getting far too bogged down by lame name drops or reference reminders artificially slotted in.

I like the show... But only because it's the most mockable tv show I've seen in years. There's just so many plot holes, illogical elements and bits of dodgy CGI per episode, and my family feels the same so none of us feel bad about talking over it to make fun of it.

If Ward is in season 2, I'm out. He's bland and lifeless, and sucks the energy out of every scene he's in. Besides which, he's crossed a moral event horizon from which there is no coming back. If he is redeemed or made "good" again, then there are literally no consequences to the things he's done, which I won't go into because I haven't learned spoiler tags.

Also, I've lost count of the number of times that the team has faced some kind of minor obstacle which could have been solved by someone on the team saying "hey, wait, we have a flying car in the back of the plane." But because the plot requires them to do something else (always more dangerous or difficult) to overcome the obstacle, everyone conveniently forgets that they have a flying car.

edit: A FLYING CAR

The gravity villain is referring to the guy who got sucked into Quinn's gravity liquid stuff, and since that is now out of The Fridge, I think it's safe to say that we shall finally be seeing him come about. Hopefully his debut involves him killing Quinn.

I'm glad they made another season I suppose, but if it's still going to be about Ward being a traitor and struggling with his 'feelings,' then I have no interest in watching it. I enjoy the stuff about the Team, and Coulson finding out the truth. This whole Ward thing is driving me up a wall.

I'm hoping that they'll decide to go all-out evil with Ward. It would make sense since the only thing keeping him from going back, Sky, has rejected him.

I would have laughed my ass off if she'd
let Ward die when he had the heart attack thing stuck to his shirt.

Deathlok: "Give me the hard drive or Ward dies!"

Skye: "Uh, Ward has killed (name) and (name) and (name) and I just watched him kill two cops five minutes ago. You're seriously trying to blackmail me by threatening his life? He's a murderer and a Hydra agent just like you are. One murderer threatening to murder another murderer does not compel me to act. Sorry, but you didn't think this through at all."

Ward: (dies) "Aagh."

edit: spoilers I suppose.

Well, cover me in plastic and call me the good furniture. That's some good news to hear. Hopefully, the creators behind the series will have learned some valuable lessons to help shape season 2 (I.E. no more filler episodes, better character development, keep things interesting, offer a bit more tie-ins to Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Not to mention less season breaks.

Zemo gets a bit tricky. The old Baron, Heinrich Zemo would be Hydra, and I suspect may be a major foe in the Agent Carter show. Mainly as I can't see any real way to shoehorn him into a movie anymore. The grandson Helmut Zemo, the modern era Baron Zemo, however you can almost guarantee will be held back for either Captain America 3 or Avengers 4. Probably some variant on the Masters of Evil story arc (which could then open the door for Thunderbolts.) Besides he doesn't mix well with Hydra. He is the philosophical opposite of them. Hydra are fascists. Zemo is a pure classic Anarchist. He loathes Hydra even more than he hates Captain America.

It would be fun to see some other, non Hydra enemies hit AoS as well. Zodiac, the Yellow Klaw, Godzilla... No no scratch that last one.

Helmut Zemo, and Anarchist? I thought he was as hell-bent on world domination as HYDRA. He even teamed up with them in Ed Brubaker's last volume of Captain America. But he would prefer himself at the top, believing The Red Skull would suck at the job.

Actually for the bulk of his appearances, particularly his long runs in Thunderbolts, Zemo the younger is depicted as a government hating anti corporatist. Basically the occupy movement with a sense of personal hygiene and a working toilet. He particularly hates Strucker. That's why he equipped Struckers son as Swordsman and sent him to kill the head of Hydra a few times. He will use Nazi's and Hydra when it suits his goals. But he really doesn't mix well with them.

Heck classically Hydra has little to do with Nazi's or the Red Skull. It grew out of Cold War East Germany and the East German Intelligence services with ties to the KGB.

Thank goodness. I love the show, and I think a lot of people take it too seriously when they talk about all the plot holes and such. It's meant to be a bit of fun - Joss Whedon is known for putting comedic relief over narrative sense, and it's what makes his work so uniquely entertaining.

Besides, comic books hardly make any sense themselves.
