Notch: Mojang Isn't Closing In Ten Years

Despite what you may have read in Rolling Stone, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson says Mojang is not going to close its doors in ten years.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone [www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/the-wizard-of-minecraft-20140507?page=2], the man behind Minecraft mused about the future of his studio, Mojang. "Hopefully, we are going to keep making money at Mojang, but if we don't, that's fine," he said. "We just have ten fun years, and then, the last year, we'd say to our employees, 'If we don't make any money this year, Mojang is going to be dead.  So you might want to look for new jobs.'"

The interview described the statement as Persson's ten-year plan if he "doesn't come up with a successor to Minecraft," which naturally led to reports that he planned to shut down Mojang if it didn't produce a comparable hit within the specified time frame. It was something of an alarming prospect for fans, since Minecraft was an utterly unpredictable monster hit and the studio's follow-up efforts haven't come close to duplicating its success; but it was also, as he explained on Twitter, not at all what he actually meant.

"The article is weirdly angled. I meant we're saving money so that from the day we don't make a profit, we'll survive another ten years. And I don't see how we'd stop making money any time soon at the rate things are going," he wrote on Twitter. "So basically, we've got money saved up to have ten more years to come up with a new project, without making a single cent in that time."

And to clarify, Mojang is still making plenty of money: Persson said in the interview that Scrolls is making "peanuts" compared to Minecraft but is profitable nonetheless, and the Minecraft machine itself shows no sign [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133626-Minecraft-Pocket-Edition-Sells-21-Million-Copies] of slowing down.

Honestly, reading this I was laughing on the inside. In that nice warm "fuck yeah you do that" kind of laugh.

I love people sometimes. "Hey, we made a shitton of money."
"Let's just... keep it and work on new stuff. Yolo (safely behind a comfortable net of cash that will last us a decade)."

I wasn't aware of the Rolling Stone article so my first thought was of the pre-Python Cleese sketch:

With the whole "There is nothing wrong with the plane" bit... :)

I was wondering what the hell Notch was tweeting about. I don't subscribe to Rolling Stone's schlock machine so, it was kind of like when you have someone muted in an online game and another person is arguing with them but, it seems like they are talking to themselves :\

EDIT: that skit above is pretty damn hilarious

Thing #7324 you can do when you're not trapped underneath the iron heel of "BUT I WANT ALL THE MONEY NOOOOOOOOWWWWWW" public investors: save ten years worth of cash to do whatever you want to during that time even if you aren't making a dime.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Minecraft has the highest margin of profit in current games. Yeah, they'll be fine.

That's actually really smart, saving money so you don't need a publisher, that is.

Also, the fact that Scrolls is making peanuts compared to Minecraft, but is still selling like htocakes, is an incredibly scary thought to me. Excluding tax, shipping, stuff like that, how much money is the studio going to make? Obviously, it won't be closed in ten years, even Persson's being stuck to things would make it sell (day planners, lamp-shades, water bottles with pornographic wrap-around art, anything. I mean, anything) so they won't be going towards the light any time soon.

1. Take massive amounts of money from Minecraft sales.
2. Put it into rewriting Minecraft in C++.
3. ???
4. MORE PROFITZ

Seriously, for running games, Java's such a PoS.

I don't think Notch had any idea what Minecraft was going to turn into. I mean his first upload was pretty much a "Hey, here's something I'm screwing around with check it out if you want." And it turn into a beast overnight.
Now that Jens and his team has taken development over I gather they're doing whatever they can to improve it's code. In fact they're supposed to be building a whole new rendering engine, eventually. But I think that's part of the problem. Notch is a really creative person and a pretty good coder. But he never saw the potential that his "fooling around" had, and wasn't really trying to make anything close to a AAA title. In fact if it wasn't for it's emergent play element I doubt it would be the popular game it is. So now they have to decide weather to live with early design decisions or go to all the trouble of backtracking and fixing them, which isn't as easy as it sounds.

Notch's private fortune is over $300 million thanks to Minecraft(and that figure is a few months old), yeah him and the studio will be just fine, at least as long as they don't blow it all on a GTA5/Destiny budget title. :p

It's going to be interesting to see what they come up with next, considering there's no publisher breathing down their necks and they basically have free reigns to do what appeals to them, rather than what some focus group thinks will sell the most copies.

I know, I know, but still. He shouldn't have let it get this far with such an unsuitable language dragging the game down. Every time I think about the fact of how Java's dumping all this crap onto my processor but is leaving the GFX card to twiddle its thumbs, I always get a little angry.
