Half-Life 3 in Development, Left 4 Dead 3 "Looks Great," Says CS Dev

Counter-Strike co-creator Minh "Gooseman" Le says he has seen Half Life 3 concept art and a playable build of a new Left 4 Dead title.

Half Life 3 has somehow become the holy grail of the PC gaming community. Spoken only of in hushed whispers, many doubt its very existence. Well, according to Counter-Strike co-creator and ex-Valve employee Minh "Gooseman" Le, it most definitely does exist, and is currently in development. He also says Valve is working on a new Left 4 Dead title, that "looks great."

"There's like a laser sight on my head right now!" Le lamented during his Twitch interview with goRGNtv [http://www.twitch.tv/gorgntv/c/4263036?t=33m55s]. "I don't think I can talk about that, to be honest, but I think it's kind of public knowledge, that people know that it is being worked on. And so if I were to say that yeah, I've seen some images, like some concept art of it, that wouldn't be big news to be honest."

"And I mean it wouldn't surprise anyone if I said they're doing it, they're working on it, yeah. So to go on a limb I'd say I did see some concept art for Half-Life 3."

Le was a lot more up-front about the new Left 4 Dead title, saying outright that he saw it and that it "looks great."

"I was really excited when I saw that, I was like 'wow, this looks great'. Because I really enjoyed Left 4 Dead, it was just one of those games that really just changed the industry. I think at the time there wasn't many good co-op games, so yeah, this is a great co-op game."

We would reach out to Valve for an official comment, but that seems like an ultimately fruitless gesture.

My problem with Valve and Half-Life right now is I am not really sure how interested in it I am anymore. I will read the articles about it, I did Half-Life 2 and the two episodes which I bought on release and I don't see that happening with Half-Life 3.

I do agree with his statement about what he talked about is that its all pretty much what the public already knows or is guessing at this point.

So since it took 7 years to make concept art, that means it will be out ... by the time the ice caps melt entirely.
I've been reluctant to get a new PC, however unreliable my 4-year-old, driver-forgetting Windows 7 running on Boot Camp for Mac gets. Source 2 games would convince me to get some top-of-the-line hardware.

Not gonna give this latest rumour much credence (mainly because I have given up hope) but I have had my own hypothesis similar to this, that basically Valve will release another Orange Box with Half Life 3/Left 4 Dead 3/Portal 3 all using a new or highly modified source engine. The numbers kinda fit with three 3s and/or "cubed" or "boxed", maybe Gaben feels he needs some kind of numerology voodoo to break the hex he has for the number three.

Concept art? Bloody fudging concept art?! It's been a very long time of well over 6 years since The Orange Box released with the last Episode of the series. What is taking them so long? Did they covert all their their developers into money counters after Steam became the go-to for digital distribution.

Dammit... If they want a full complement of 3's, then that means they're going to have to make enough games to do an Orange Box 2 before they get around to doing the one you described. This could take a while.

I feel its important to stress that unlike the various studios that worked on Duke Nukem Forever, Half-life 3 has never been formally announced by Valve. They've never promised anything to the best of my knowledge. They've not released previews or done extreme graphics prerendered gameplay videos, and there's no preorders available.

This is literally the only news we've gotten out of valve on the topic in years.

I feel its important to make that distinction whenever the topic of "vaporware and empty broken promises from valve" comes up.

Given that each of those games on their own would justify a full retail price they would probably just sell them seperately. If they did do Orange Box 2: Son of Orange Box I reckon they'd do something similar to the first with Episode 3/Half Life 3 and then a bunch of other games that are complete unknowns (Portal) or some other project they want to promote (TF2). Plus putting three big games together in a celebration of Valve's discovery of a new number might make them go a little overboard and sell it at $333.33

OT: If concept art means they are actively developing the game then they have been doing so for a while since various pieces have found their way on to the net over the years. Did this guy just mention Half Life 3 to get some extra attention since it's pretty much guaranteed to get some more views that way?

No reason to get hyped. Concept Art could mean anything, and concept art exists for hundreds of projects that ended up cancelled or never moving past the concept stage. In addition, I also believe this guy hasn't actually worked at Valve in a while.

As someone who knows nothing of the Half Life universe, I need a quick explanation why there's such an internet boner for Half Life 3. I keep hearing that Half life 2 is the pinnacle of gaming, but I've never heard why. Pretty much, the only game I grew up with was BF 1942, so I ignored everything else. So why the fuck is Half Life 3 more anticipated than The Last Guardian?

wow, if you have never played half life back in 1998, you sure missed out on one of the best FPS ever made. get HL1 on steam right now and play it. then you will see. then get the orange box that includes HL2, epi 1 and 2, TF2 (even when its for free now) and portal. now you should get these games really cheap. unless you wait for steam sales, then you get them even cheaper.
HL is a unique sci-fi, action game. with its story, enemies and level design. HL2 has an amazing location, interesting characters and story.
seriously, just get them. sticking whit one game is not really a good way when there are so many good games out there. and HL is one of them.

Sigh...for a brief, shining moment, I thought there was actually news about Half-Life 3. But there's not. Just a former employee dangling a carrot. A carrot that no one is interested in because we all know what it tastes like: disappointment and dashed dreams.

I don't care about the Left 4 Dead series to be honest. The gameplay is okay, but I got bored quick. And the story is very generic and lack-luster. Which is a pity. We all know that Valve has the ability to tell great stories (or should I say show?), so the fact that it got placed on the very back burner for the Left 4 Dead series is baffling to me.

There's actually a surprising amount of narrative strewn throughout the official campaigns. Much of it built into the maps and environments, of course, but there's still a lot of little details and story arcs panning out all through the game.

But...you're right. It's no where near as prevalent or extensive as the narratives for their other story-driven series.

Perhaps that's what their plan for Left 4 Dead 3 is? Go full tilt on the story and narrative structure.

One can only hope.

As someone who doesn't care at all about HL3 (because the prequels to it have all been mediocre to slightly above average at best), I find news like this hilarious. Everyone gets hugely excited and starts rehyping themselves up only to find out that the new revelations aren't really revelations and that the news isn't really that big, and then they are just sad and disappointed, and I love it. It is just hilarious.

It isn't as prevalent here as it is on other sites I frequent, but people's ridiculous reactions from the highest of highs to lowest of lows to news like this is always really entertaining.

I think George RR Martin must be writing the story for HL3. Or is Valve writing The Winds of Winter?

HL3 concept art does not mean its in development.
And i hope HL3 will never come out. there is no way it could meet expectations by now.

L4D3 coming out, well, that owuld be interesting, and valve finally learning to count to 3. i heard GabeN has been seeing a specialist about that.

GOD DAMN IT MIN! We were trying to lure it out with silence... The gaming community has decided for about year now that if we don't talk about it than maybe it'll come out of hiding! Now we'll never have half life 3...
