X-Men: Days of Future Past Is Fox's Top Grossing Superhero Movie Ever

It beat out X-Men: The Last Stand by a little over $40 million.

As of this, its second weekend, X-Men: Days of Future Past [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9253-X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past] has grossed $500.2 million worldwide - $128.2 million globally this weekend alone - making it the top selling title in the 20th Century Fox and Marvel hero franchise, and the highest earning X-Men movie ever. It cost something in the region of $200 million to produce, so right about now some accountants out there are howling at the moon with joy. Or as close as accountants get to that kind of ecstasy, anyway.

International cash is the best kind; Days of Future Past owes its phenomenal income to its international audience, which put in $338.1 million of the total. X-Men: The Last Stand, the previous X-Men high earner, took in only $459.4 million, while X-Men: First Class took in $353.6 million in 2011.

Days of Future Past had been predicted to make something like $100 million made $90.8 million domestically [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134768-FRIDAY-BOX-OFFICE-X-Men-Predicted-to-Defeat-Captain-America] in 3 days over the holiday weekend, topping $100 million on the fourth day.

This weekend Days of Future Past came in second, in terms of box office, to Maleficent [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9291-Maleficent-An-Unusual-Fairy-Tale-of-Revenge?utm_source=latest&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=all], which took in $170 million on its opening weekend.

That title is pretty misleading, I mean when you read it, it makes some sense but leaving out the fox part makes it seem that this made more than Avengers or Ironman 3.

This headline becomes significantly less exciting when you realise it actually means 'Days of Future Past is the Best Selling Marvel Movie made by Fox.'

So an alternate headline is 'Days of Future Past Sells Better Than Wolverine Origins and The Fantastic Four'

ummm...pretty sure The Avengers is Marvel and that made over $1.5 Billion
Yeah it's just FOX. It does make me wish that they take into account inflation more often though when they make these kind of headlines. $1 billion in 2014 is only $900,000 in 2008 money. I always felt like Avatar cheated, because I don't know if it would have beaten Titanic if it wasn't in 3D and so charging everyone double the price, never mind taking into account inflation

Not watched it yet, hate they keep focusing on Wolverine. He is nigh on invincible which makes him boring. Wish they had been like the comics and used kitty pryde (i think) to travel in time - give us a new character that is actually at risk. Still want a Magneto movie as he is far more interesting a character, especially if they do one where he is younger chasing Nazis. Magneto may be powerful but he is still a human and can be killed.

Wow that title is really misleading. It should be 'Newest Wolverine and Friends Beats out Previous WaF Movies, X-men: First Class, and Those Crappy Fantastic Four Movies in the Box Office'.

Yeah being on top of a list of lousy movies isn't that great, but still that's a pretty huge payday there with more sure to come. I do wonder how much of that 200 million budget went to paying for those few minute cameos though

And the first Thor, Captain America, both Hulks, all 3 Blade films, Daredevil and Ghost Rider.

Or X-Men: Days of Future Past becomes fastest grossing 2014 CBM after 10 days beating Captain America: Winter Soldier and ASM 2.

Maybe you all of who accuse this movie of being focused on Wolverine should watch it before making claims?! Wolverine is maybe the one who goes back in time, but he is not the center of the movie. Xavier is the one with the main character arc and the emotional focus of Days of Future past.

Indeed. Mystique and Magneto also have important parts to play. There's also the fact that they couldn't use Kitty as the time-traveller is because she hadn't been born yet in the 'young' era. The "Both sets of actors" thing they have going works VERY well.

Glad to see this film is going well. I very much enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to more of the 'First Class' group (and, for the first time since The Last Stand, I'd actually be optimistic for a film from the classic group).

I'm somewhat sorry that I contributed to that. It wasn't a very good movie.
Mmmm- yah. It really wasn't that good. The Quicksilver bit was really cool - arguably the best bit in the whole movie (and it's the only time that actually seems like the movie is having fun with itself). Magneto was awesome. But we found many parts of it unintentionally funny. Like Magneto's sassy whatever-hands pose at a certain point as he flies away somewhere. Also, even though the movie tries so very hard to take itself seriously - it was really difficult to empathize with the heroes' plight while in cg form; I just can't get that worked up about cartoon people who are mixed in with live action drama that was far more compelling (that is to say for more compelling than not compelling at all). And the Sentinel designs were unimpressive. A step backwards from First Class and completely forgetable apart from Quicksilver, Magneto, and some funny stuff that wasn't supposed to be funny.

Also, is anyone as sick as I am of a really cool line of dialogue that is the crux of a film's trailer not appearing in the bloody film? "You're afraid. I remember..." It's in the trailer. It looks and sounds awesome and ominous. And nope - the "I remember" part is not in the movie, and the dialogue fell completely flat in comparison. That whole scene felt like a total let down.
