Rumor: The Post-Avengers 2 Plan For The Hulk

This article is a potential spoiler just by existing.

Drew McWeeny over at HitFix has written a piece about the recent semi-soft denial [http://www.mtv.com/news/1857733/planet-hulk-mark-ruffalo/] by Mark Ruffalo that Marvel is planning to make a Planet Hulk movie. In it, McWeeny reveals details about the end of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as some very convincing speculation about where it leads into the future of the MCU. This is your friendly warning that reading further will subject you to potential spoilers of a serious magnitude.

So, if you don't want to be even potentially spoiled hugely, stop reading now. This is your last chance.

.
.
.
.
.

Ok? Let's begin. As you know, while Mark Ruffalo has recently been teasing increased Marvel interest in developing The Hulk beyond his supporting role in Avengers 2, though, as we note above, he's shushing down talk that Marvel might be planning to adapt the Planet Hulk storyline, telling Mtv that "I don't think ['Planet Hulk'] is the way to go yet. I think you need more Banner."

Fair enough, though I'd clarify that to say you need more Ruffalo, since he's the magic ingredient that finally made Hulk click with audiences (and, in my opinion, made Hulk compelling enough on screen to care beyond coolness factor.) But clearly he seems confident that Marvel wants to do something with the character beyond The Avengers. But what?

Enter McWeeny, who (along with a dozen or so other journalists I'm insanely jealous of) recently visited the set of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. He's apparently obtained knowledge about the end of that film via means other than what he saw from the shoot. Here's what he says [http://www.hitfix.com/motion-captured/what-mark-ruffalos-not-telling-you-when-he-talks-about-marvels-planet-hulk-plans]:

Without giving away why and how, let's look at the state of things for Bruce Banner at the end of "Age Of Ultron." Banner continues to play a key role in things in this movie, and when the final war with Ultron spills onto the battlefield... he has a major part to play. Unfortunately, that ends with him onboard a Quin jet on his way off the planet, with no way to immediately turn things around. He's going to have to ride out the trip. It's pre-programmed and he can't stop it.

So there you go. Avengers 2 ends with the Hulk catapulted into deep space, almost like an inverse of what happens at the end of the first film.

But wait, there's more!

Now, you might have noticed that Marvel has a movie coming out in just a few weeks set entirely in outer space - or, at least, the parts of our Galaxy not inside of Earth's atmosphere. That seems like a convenient destination for Bruce Banner to end up. McWeeny speculates that the ship sends him into the GOTG sector of the universe, and that we're likely to see the Hulk team up with them in GOTG 2, incorporating elements of Planet Hulk into the story. That's assuming of course that it's a hit. But come on, we know it's going to be.

I'll buy it. Though I admit that's going to make for a potentially crowded movie. We already know for sure that according to rumor [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135791-Your-First-Look-At-Michael-Rooker-As-Yondu-In-GOTG]) by Nathan Fillion, will at least make a cameo appearance. And this isn't even including any of the various villains we'll encounter. All of which is to say we already have a fairly beefy roster of characters who might potentially be brought back for the sequel, well before Mark Ruffalo gets added to the mix.

I'm not saying it won't or couldn't happen mind you - McWeeny generally tends to be right about these things. And make no mistake, it would be awesome. Even so, I'm not completely convinced that Guardians 2 has to be the movie to bring it all together. Hell, I'm half convinced Thor 3 will see Asgardians in more cosmic and less Earth-centric adventures. We'll see.

But what do you think? Does this sound likely? Does it make you hope for a sequel before you've seen the first one? Sound off in comments.

I'm not sure about this, mainly because "The Silver Surfer" and an entire schtick about mind control discs and the like plays a heavy role in Planet Hulk and it's sequel from what I remember. I think the story would be missing a certain something without his inclusion, and I don't think Disney/Marvel has the rights to that character as they are presumably still tied to the Fantastic Four franchise. I suppose they could manipulate things with good lawyers and claim that in the "Silver Savage" guise old Norran Radd is a different character but that might be a hard sell.

All what does that mean for Hulk in Avengers 3? I want to see him pummel Thanos. Also why not have Thanos transport him off the planet with a lie and blame it on the Avengers. Then you can have World War Hulk. Then you can have Hulk crash back to earth as the villian in Avengers 4.

Cool. I do like the potential idea of a Planet Hulk-esk story line in the future because that would definitely be fun. But I'll wait and see how things go when the movie comes out next year.

I'd rather they set-up She-Hulk first. Give him someone close who can relate to him... and Tony Stark doesn't count.

In the animated version of Planet Hulk it was Beta Ray Bill instead of Silver Surfer. They could always go that route too.

Can we please get a She-hulk movie? I'd kill a small defenseless animal for a she-hulk movie, nothing too cute like a seal but maybe a fawn or baby pig. You know something I could eat afterwards...

I'm going to call shenanigans on this. It's a focus tested rumour, that is, it was purposefully leaked in order to gauge the fan base' reaction to the idea. It's primary response goal is to determine how excited the fans would be for another Hulk movie, with a secondary of how well probable movie plot-lines might be received.

I believe the animated movie version replaced the Surfer with Beta Ray Bill, who Marvel undoubtedly have the right for and I would very much like to see in Thor 3. Would be a good way of linking the Ancient Astronauts of Asgard with the Marvel cosmic world as a whole

WWH! WWH! There was concept art of Hulk fighting a Hulkbuster armor so Tony may have made contingencies that only come to light after Ultron or maybe because of Ultron, including the location of an Earth-like planet should Bruce be deemed too dangerous to keep around. And yea, if true, it is a spoiler, but interesting rumor nonetheless and not entirely unexpected.

This actually seems pretty fitting, considering Rocket was first introduced in a Hulk issue before Guardians was established. It'd be a nice way to tie it back, Hulk being sent out into space and becoming the first proper connecting piece between Earth and all of GotG's craziness again.

The Incredible Hulk is actually the only Marvel movie not to have an after credits stinger. Because it was only the second MCU film they had Tony Stark show up in the final scene to make sure everyone knew they were connected and wouldn't miss it.

Unless you're thinking of something else from back during the movie itself that I'm not remembering.

I believe he's referring to the guy whose head Banner's blood drips onto in the movie, making it grow. IIRC, his character in the comics becomes the Leader.

Oh, right. Totally forgot about that bit, for some reason I was remembering it as Blonsky just killed him. It's been a while since I've seen that one

I was thinking of Tim Blake Nelson's character, Samuel Sterns, who eventually turns into the "Leader". But I guess they're not following that. Anyway Nelson has another role in the Fantastic Four reboot.
