Superman to Play The Atom on Arrow

Superman Returns star returns to DC Universe for CW series

He may have been replaced as the live-action Superman by Henry Cavill, but Superman Returns' Brandon Routh isn't done with DC Comics roles: He's now set to appear in the third season of Arrow as scientist/superhero Ray Palmer, aka The Atom.

Created in 1961, The Atom is a physicist who discovers a way to reduce his size to the subatomic level (as opposed to Marvel's similar Ant-Man, who can typically "only" shrink to insect size and also become a giant) while retaining his natural strength, which he utilizes to become a costumed superhero and occasional Justice League member. His size-changing abilities also enable him to travel through telephone lines a the speed of electricity, visit pocket-universes existing at the subatomic level and even traverse the Multiverse by slipping through the cracks between dimensions.

Routh originally auditioned for the role of Superman back when director McG was still circling JJ Abrams "Superman: Flyby" script, and was recalled to the role for Returns by Bryan Singer. He's since made noteworthy appearances in Scott Pilgrim and Zack & Miri Make a Porno and had the title role in Dylan Dog: Dead of Night.

How sad do you think he'll be when he inevitably has to work with Cavill in some movie or one off episode, supporting the Superman which it seems everyone prefers to his?

Still, I am kind of interested to see where this could go. Season 2 of Arrow has just about started to introduce the weird, wonderful and wacky side of comics in a more serious light, but they've tried to keep it somewhat grounded, or at least progressing slowly. And now we have a shrinking man. Any character to take screen time away from Laurel is good though.

Nice to see Brandon get another role. I loved his portrayal of Supes, if not the film. His work on Chuck was amazing...even though the show eventually pissed me off. I can see him as being a really good fit, and adding a certain level of emotion we haven't seen from Atom that often in the comics.

Would also like to see him alongside the other DC creations in the film universe, but I think DC stated that the TV worlds will never cross over with the film universes (dunno if that is good or bad, arguments for either case really).

Nice, I'm sure he'll do a good job. I'm also liking the fact that they're delving more and more into the more "fantastical" stuff on the show.

On that I very much agree.

Everyone? Hardly. I think Routh was a much better Superman, an infinitely better Clark Kent and Superman Returns was a much better film than MoS. It wasn't great, but MoS was terrible and Cavill wasn't a great casting choice.

A thousand times this. Most useless and annoying character I've ever come across. Rubbish actress to boot. More huntress instead please.

Glad to hear it, I'm an arrow Fan, and I thought Routh did a good job with what he was given (seriously he barely had any dialogue)

I don't think Returns was a bad film, it just felt a bit...flaccid.

Clearly Huntress (And S2Canary) left so that they could go join Oracle to form a Birds of Prey TV show that isn't terrible.

Right? Please DC?
