James Gunn Spills Early Plot Details for Guardians of the Galaxy Sequel

The first movie has only just hit theaters, and the director already has a lot of ideas on paper, telling fans "if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie.".

With a sequel <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136451-SDCC-2014-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-2-Already-Announced-For-July-2017>already dated for July 28, 2017, it shouldn't be surprising that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has already been brainstorming up plans for his next foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking with website Film Divider, Gunn talked about what paths his characters could take in the follow-up and what story beats he'd like to further explore.

Suffice to say, the following could contain minor spoilers for the first movie, so read ahead at your peril.

Good to go? Then here's Gunn's words with Film Divider:

I know a lot of where I want to go. I have a lot of ideas for stories and characters that are going to appear, and there are documents written up, that some people have, about Peter Quill's father and his relationship, a lot of stuff about Yondu and a lot of stuff about Drax that nobody knows.

There are a lot of things that are part of the overall schematic that already exist, not to mention a lot of stuff about all of the cultures. There's a lot of stuff about Xandarian and Kree culture that I've written down or I have in my head, as well as Krylorians and Ravagers.

In a later roundtable chat Film Divider sat in on, Gunn spoke further on fleshing out plot details with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige:

Kevin Feige has stuff. I wrote up a lot. He knows all the stuff and if I died tomorrow they could go make a movie. They could write the story of Peter Quill's father and it would all be there. I think Yondu is a very important character, a really important character in this universe, and I think Nebula is really important too and so I think we'll see more of both of those characters.

Considering the early positive buzz of the film, I'm sure plenty of you have your own ideas on what you'd like to see in a Guardians follow-up. Feel free to sound off in the comments about how you'd fell about more screen time for Drax, Yondu, Nebula, Papa Quill or anything else Guardians-related. And if you're still undecided on whether or not to see the film, check out Movie Bob's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9615-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Surprise-This-Movie-Rocks?utm_source=latest&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=all>review.

Honestly, I'd live to see more in the Marvel Cosmic universe. I really would like to see Adam Warlock in the sequel and mainstays like Moondragon and Carol Danvers would work well too It would also make a tie-in for a Ms/Captain Marvel movie.

If they weren't already setting Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet to be the big threat in Avengers 3, I'd say they should atleast introduce or make a nod to the Silver Surfer and Galactus. Unfortunately I think those two are to closely associated with the Fantastic Four for that to happen. All things considered Gunn's early musings mean good things for those of us who were big fans of Michael Rooker as Yondu. Even if its not immediately clear that he was one of the original Guardians from the early 70's run of the series.

Anybody that saw the movie would already know Quill's dad is going to be of some importance in the sequels.

I desperately hope they cast Kurt Russell as his father J'son of Spartax.

Yeah, they kinda look alike! I can see Russell playing him with his beard from The Thing.

Do you think after seeing the movie that Yondu's "soft spot" for Star-Lord is actually just Yondu knowing that at anytime he can sell him to his father so it's always best to spare him?

What I gathered was...

Yondu abducted him on his dad's orders once there was nothing left for Quill back on Earth. That's why the abduction takes place not one minute after his mom dies - Quill's dad had him retrieved. I'm still not sure why they didn't hand him over though.

That's what I'm getting at. Yondu never handed him over because Ravagers steal and Peter is a valuable guy. But he's never killed him when he does stupid shit because someday he plans on selling him to his father.
