Marvel Releases Thanos Pic From Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel has released a still of Josh Brolin's Thanos showcasing his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy.

With Guardians of the Galaxy now in theaters Marvel fans from near and far will likely be lining up to get their latest dose of comic book film adaptation goodness. And while the movie is apparently chalk full of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9615-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Surprise-This-Movie-Rocks?utm_source=latest&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=all>nods and spectacle, it will also be giving Marvel fans a closer look at some of the universe's bigger villains.

Among them will be Thanos, who appeared briefly at the end of The Avengers and is now returning as something of a puppet master to the film's chief baddie Ronan the Accuser. Perhaps wanting to give fans a peek at him in advance (we would too if we'd snagged <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/134924-Josh-Brolin-Rumored-As-Thanos-in-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy>Josh Brolin to play him), Marvel has released a high resolution still of him from the film. The image in question shows the character sitting on his throne, looking ominous and maybe even just a little bit smug. The picture is similar to another leaked <a href=http://instagram.com/p/rGkvqzzR7Q>by a fan who attended an advance screening earlier this week.

Even with Thanos not being the primary villain of Guardians, we'd be lying if we were to say we were anything less than excited to see him being realized so fully on the big screen. What do you think? Does he look like you imagine he should? Is he close enough to the comics or even too close? And if you've seen Guardians of the Galaxy, what did you think of Josh Brolin's performance?

It's a pretty nice looking version of Thanos.

I think his outfit's probably as close as they were ever going to pull off to the purple and gold spandex of the comics.

Ar- are those... rocket propelled armrests?

That is, amazingly pointless.

I love it.

He looks a bit too skinny(?), I mean he looks huge but Thanos is usually bulkier.

Trust me it works. Combined with Josh Brolin's performance, from the moment he starts to speak there is no doubt as to who the boss is. To say that he is imposing would be a massive understatement.

I second this. His appearance in the film is a bit too brief to really get a sense of what he'll be like in Avengers 3, but it seems like he's going to be a fantastic villain when his time eventually comes.

Even if it does bug me no end that Thanos got to be in a big-budget movie before Darkseid.

I kind of wish they had kept the original costume style that you see at the end of The Avengers. Having him all CGI here is a small step down I think. Not nearly enough to ruin it in any way, but I liked The Avengers version. It had that 'look' that the rest of the movies had.

That being said, Thanos completely works in this movie. There's just no doubt who the main boss is here, even if Ronan is the main villain. Looking forward to seeing him in all his glory in the third Avengers movie.

Thanos is incredibly boring in the movie. There should be a trope for "the scowly bad guy that's sitting on his throne waiting to step into the plot at some point".

I'd be damned if I said that he wasn't menacing within the little screen time he did have in the movie...

With that said, I kinda want to see a good Marvel one-shot of Thanos, similar to how The Mandarin had on, just to give the better teaser of how big of a threat Thanos is going to be in "due time"... (unless that's going to spoil the surprise or something like that... :p)

What was so menacing about him? He did nothing, achieved nothing and suggested nothing more than exactly what you saw: guy on a throne.

Maybe I should have mentioned how my imagination was almost the sole reason for "guy on a throne"'s menacing demeanor overall, I guess... :p

To appreciate Thanos' performance, it works best if you know who he actually is. I do, so therefore I liked this. To anyone who never read a comic book in their life, he's not as well-understood.

They're wheeling out the heavy-hitters now with Thanos in Avengers 2 and Apocalypse in the next X-men.
Um Avengers 3 you mean. Ultron is Avengers 2. That's been the title of the movie since last year.

By that rationale I can imagine pretty much anything about anybody without any kind of input on the movie's behalf. Like how Team Rocket are such formidable opponents because my imagination runs so deep.

To appreciate Thanos' performance you need to have watched any movie in which the villain sits in the shadows and mutters about how "everything is going according to plan". Muahaha.

Which is funny, given how there was an actual arc in the later Pokemon [main] series where they actually TRY to be formidable opponents without actually wanting Pikachu in the process... (Too bad it only works if you hated Ash and Co. "purposefully stealing the show" because the plot said so...)

But yeah, it was fun to use my imagination to fill in the blanks for someone who, within this movie, works best if you already knew him beforehand... Otherwise, the scene in question comes off as some kind of "deleted scene" that, if "possible", didn't have to even be in this movie in the first place...
