Sophie Turner: "Big Change" for Sansa in Game of Thrones Season 5

Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones adds that no one is "Team Sansa," and hints at what's coming to the character in Season 5.

It's common knowledge by now that a lot of people really like HBO's hit TV show, Game of Thrones. However, that affection doesn't necessarily translate to the show's characters even if they're considered as one of the protagonists. This sentiment hasn't escaped Sophie Turner who plays Sansa Stark. In an interview, Turner admits that she often found herself defending Sansa against people frustrated by the character's poor choices and perceived passivity." In fact, Turner cheered a bit when a fan came to microphone (during the Game of Thrones Comic-Con panel) and declared herself a member of "Team Sansa."

That was awesome because no one is Team Sansa...People are adjusting. I think it's helped that she actually did something kind of cool last season where she was like manipulating and a little bit bad-ass.

Turner also shared her time shooting in Croatia, and recounts her time working with award-winning actor Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrion Lannister.

Doing the scenes with Peter is fun because he's so funny and we get on really well...It's nice because we both really understand the relationship that they have. They have this unspoken trust - she's so much more open with him than she is with [other people]. You can see she's a lot more relaxed around him, even if it's just a snarky comment, she wouldn't say that to someone else in court. She doesn't want to trust him because he's a Lannister but she knows that she can. It's really sweet.

Finally, while Turner has begun shooting scenes for Game of Thrones Season 5, she couldn't (understandably) offer specific details where her character is going. However, she did reveal a "big change" is coming for Sansa Stark.

I can't reveal much, but there's a big change for her this season and there's a few familiar faces around

Whatever this change is, let's hope it endears Sansa to more fans of the show, and it doesn't involve more crying and moping.

I like Sansa. People hate her because they see her as a "mope and a crybaby" but seriously, look what has happened to her. She's seen her dad's severed head on a pike, nearly got married to a psychopath king, her mum and brother and pregnant sister in law were brutally murdered, her home was burnt to a crisp, nearly got raped. I'm probably missing something.

When I see her crying, I'm just like... Fair 'nuf.

Yeah. While Sansa was a bit insufferable with her naivety in the beginning, she later grew to have a sense of... quiet defiance (not looking away from her father's head) and resilience within her. I liked her, especially with the advent of major character development.

It took me a while to catch up on GoT and I was surprised coming out of it to hear people disliking Sansa, and I think Sophie kinda nails it. Sansa wasn't the most interesting or proactive character in the series so a lot of people probably felt like they were getting robbed when the focus would shift to her, but I honestly thought there were going to be big plans for her ever since the scene when Joffrey forced her to look at Ned's head and she moved to push him off the battlement to his death, and was only stopped by The Hound. There was some real hatred there, past the tears.

She probably just looks really tame in comparison to her sister, who's racked up a kill count and has been responsible for several other deaths. But like Sophie says, I think there's going to be big plans for her in the coming season now that she's teamed up with Baelish.

Sansa's story so far has been a perfect example of a person trapped in a hopeless situation, while trying to make the least bad decision at every turn. Which she has done pretty well after season 1.

Unless they're making drastic changes to the story line I really don't know what Turner is talking about. To the best of my recollection, Sansa's story pretty much stops where the show left off...she is barely mentioned in book 4 and completely absent from book 5.

The only thing significant thing for Sansa now is
her marriage to the next heir of the vale being arranged,
but that won't potentially happen to season 6 or 7, so I don't know what the S5 big change could possibly be

That's the difference between the characters in the books and their portrayal in the TV show. In the books there aren't any heroes and theres no "teams". Sanza is a useless turd in the books too. Don't bother "hoping" more comes out of her. I'd hate to see them change her for the show just because people whine about it.
I'd disagree. I was Team Sansa since reading the books and was very, very angry that she wasn't in Book 5. You can tell Martin is building her up to be absolutely kick-ass in the next entries, in an interesting parallel to Arya.

More relevant to the show: ever since Season 1, I've been very skeptical as to whether Sophie Turner can play bad-ass Sansa. She's a natural at whiny, unlikable Sansa -- perhaps too much of a natural to make the switch.

I actually think Sansa is a great character, and in the books her chapters are usually pretty interesting.

I always thought the reason people hated her was
that her actions are a large part of what got Ned killed

Once that's over with she becomes very sympathetic and even likeable.

She dies? On a more serious note i hope that she stops being the victim and starts her own evil schemes like the rest of them.

In related news: Sansa does one thing that can't be described as being a delusional rag doll; immediately begins vamping in celebration of her new supervillain status.

I don't hate the character, in fact, I pity her. No one deserves what she's gone through. But she's got a long way to go before she's anywhere near as interesting or involved in her own story as, say, Cersei, Arya, Brienne, or even Margaery.

It must be really annoying when people approach an actor about a character. People should probably approach the writers. Her character is annoying, but the actress seems quite normal. And she isn't hard on the eyes either.

Oh thank god, we get to look forward to more absolutely nonexistent character development wherein the relatable innocent character becomes an Empowered Hollywood Heroine at the drop of a hat.

Seriously, look back at Season 4. One episode she's feeling safe in the Vale, then threatened by her crazy aunt, then all of a sudden, she can out-lie fucking Littlefinger and scheme just like the best of 'em. And here I was, thinking that her lesson from all of Cersei's shit was that scheming is bad.

I dunno, I really feel like they're mishandling some of the key characters in the story, and I don't think it can last.

I know they are diverging from the books with the show more and more, but i honestly dont remmeber anything worth mentioning with Sansa after what was already shown in the series. Season 5 focus should omit Sansa completely. so what is she on about?

Thing is, she was a mope and crybaby BEFORE even getting to kings landing. Its not that what happened made her this way, she was always this way. if anything, in the season 4 finale we saw that the brutality changed her for the better instead.

since you have read the books, you know that Arya is going to have a training montage season so of course many things could be done more interestingly with other characters. that is unless it changes completely because Martin already did a lot of changes to Arya.

To be honest, putting up with Joffrey's shit required a -lot- of lies, and even if she wasn't showing it, she's been taking an immersion crash course intrigue.
Not to mention that reading Littlefinger's crush on anyone who looked like Catelyn, and figuring out that he was her best bet was not exactly rocket science.

They probably had a bit of backchat with Martin, and thought up something for her, as she's had quite a bit of screen time in the show so far, and it'd be bad form to then put her on a bus for two seasons straight, just after she's had a big moment.

Martin himself only pulls it off because he's dealing with so many "protagonists" that he can afford to.

I agree. Over the course of the first four seasons, Sansa has perhaps seen the widest variety of morals and motivations of any of the main cast, between Cersei, Ned, Tyrion, Baelish, Joffrey, Margery, and the Hound. She's seen what works and what doesn't.

At one point, perhaps towards the end of season 2 (I forget precisely), Littlefinger calls her the worst liar in King's Landing. And, at the time, he was right. But she is smarter than people give her credit for, and she was learning.

Sansa's finale in the Vale, I think, perfectly represented her character development. Her moment of testimony wasn't some random, forced scene; it had four seasons of build-up. Sansa's first big lie of the series was delivered perfectly, with just the right amount of truth and weakness sprinkled in to make the lords of the Vale feel sympathy for her and believe her lies. It was expertly crafted.

Sure, Sansa doesn't do much in books 4 and 5, but anyone who has actually read the books knows that many characters have stories progressing much faster than their book counterparts. It's very possible that we'll see Sansa doing things that have not yet happened in the books next season, and it should be interesting to watch.

Well as Sophie Turner is now over 18, that can only mean one thing for GoT. She's getting them out.
