8 Video Games That Didn't Sell As Well As Expected

Today we give you eight games that everyone thought would sell millions of copies. Unfortunately for them, they did not, they actually did quite poorly. Some didn't sell so well because they were bad games, and some were games that were ahead of their time. So enjoy, and what other games should we have included on this list?

I make a mistake, thought the 'report' button would actually let me tell ya why I reported it.
>_>

So, here's the reason:

And, if I learned how to read, I would have seen the bloodily 'contact' link.

Daikatana didn't fail because it was pitted against better games, it failed because it was shit.

I like how at least four of these titles were good games. I say "at least four" because I've only ever seen ads for APB on various other sites.

How about Shenmue? To be a success didn't they need every Dreamcast owner to buy something like 2 of it?

Holy crap the comma splices in this article are out of control!

Unfortunately for them it fell flat, the games suffered from poor management as they supposedly ignored negative comments from beta-testers, why have a beta test if you're just going to ignore it.
This is pretty much unreadable. I know these Top 8 lists are always just for a fun, quick read, but they deserve better writing/editing than this.

I love Tim Schafer too, but isn't having nearly half of the list about him a bit much?
Beyond Good & Evil and Kingdoms of Amalur also had significant problems at retail.

I think they're sort of missing the point on DNF. The game didn't sell well because:

-By that point, no one had any faith the game would be any good.
-Everyone was hoping for an old-school shooter, instead they got a vanilla regenerating health and "can only carry 2 weapons at once" shooter.
-The level design wasn't all that great, which was a huge appeal of the original Duke Nukem.
-The ability to interact with your environment was a big deal when DN3D came out, now it was pretty much standard practice.
-It just flat out wasn't that good of a game.

I'd say in this case both are true.

This was the time of Unreal Tournament, Quake III Arena, Deus Ex, Rogue Spear, Perfect Dark, Timesplitters, System Shock 2 and Thief 2. It was pretty much a golden age for first person games.

Of course an overhyped piece of shit like Daikatana wouldn't survive in an environment like that.

Sadly, critical success with reviewers and/or players doesn't guarantee commercial success.

I went in it with open mind, thinking "Maybe it's just the overhype and the stupid as fuck marketing and the delays, it can still be a serviceable shooter" and no, it wasn't. Such idiotic design decisions from the beginning and that's coming from a man who was all "DESIGN DESIGN DESIGN".

What the hell is this list? "Sell as Well as Expected"?

Half the games listed were (are) crap, so anyone paying attention "expected" them to sell poorly. The other half are Tim Schafer, who for all his creative brilliance can't market worth a damn, so since hardly anyone was aware of these games prior to release there was no "expectation" for them to sell well.

Then there's Earthbound, which actually did sell okay but not as well as Final Fantasy? Um... okay... maybe revise your personal expectations then?

Agreed. Schafer can't market at all. Even with his multiple Kickstarted games he's shown that his company isn't good at managing funds. Amazing game designer but there's a reason Notch refused to fund Psychonauts 2. Probably not because Schafer asked for too much, but because he doesn't know budgeting.

And yeah... Earthbound sold pretty damn well. for its time. It sold better than Lunar and that game got a localized sequel. To be honest I think this what when Nintendo started losing its JRPG supremacy on consoles.
