Lionhead Unveils Fable 3

Lionhead Studios [http://www.lionhead.com/] has revealed that its final revolutionary will be you, as you embark upon a journey that will lead you to the throne of Albion in Fable 3.

Che Guevara, Maximilien Robespierre, Abraham Lincoln, Aristotle, Emma Goldman, Joan of Arc: Images of these historical revolutionary figures recently appeared [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93965-Lionheads-1-Revolutionary-is-Joan-of-Arc] as a series of splash pages on the Lionhead website, along with a countdown of sorts indicating that something big would be revealed today. As promised, that "something big" has been unveiled, and it's Fable 3.

In the third chapter of Lionhead's hit RPG franchise, gamers will make their way through the world as a hero or a villain striving for the throne of Albion, a land divided by tyranny, poverty and injustice. Taking place five decades after the previous game, players will play as the child of the Fable 2 [http://www.lionhead.com/Fable2/] hero, "making choices and sacrifices that will test your morality and can affect your entire kingdom."

"We've spent a lot of time at Lionhead thinking about how we can innovate the gameplay and progress the world of the Fable games for its third chapter, and we're confident that players won't second-guess what we have planned for Fable 3," said Lionhead Creative Director Peter Molyneux. "Though I can't give too much away right now, players should expect to have to make much tougher choices with far wider consequences than ever before in Albion - and with many more interactive adventure elements."

Microsoft is marking the news of Fable 3 with the announcement that Fable 2 will soon be available on Xbox Live as Fable 2: Game Episodes. The episodic release will offer the full Fable 2 experience, including compatibility with the add-ons Knothole Island and See the Future, broken into five parts, with the first episode available free.

"With the Fable 2 episodic model, we're encouraging people to experience the first chapter of the game for free, then move onto other chapters when they are ready," said Microsoft Game Studios [http://www.microsoft.com/games/] General Manager Phil Spencer. "It's a unique model and one that will appeal to gamers who've been hesitant to dive full into the original retail release."

Fable 2: Game Episodes will debut on Sept. 29, while Fable 3 is scheduled for a holiday 2010 release, exclusively for the Xbox 360 [http://www.xbox.com].

Yuss!

Rejoice! It's finally here!

Once it's released, I'll only have to wait for the other two before I can die happy.

Peter: Okay, this time, get this, you can have an orgy with 10 people!!

In all seriousness, I think they need to tone down the silly this time around. I couldn't take Fable II seriously at all.

#Copy pasted (and slightly edited) from Scamola's forum thread, the opinion still holds true.

I gotta say, I'm really not looking to much forward to this. The concept looks good and interesting, but we know that Peter has a bit of a problem with execution.
I think he's hit the nail on the head. For all Mr Moly is going to spout in the next year/two years/whatever, we already know this is just going to be Fable 2 (that's to say, Fable) with a couple of extra minor features and probably some motion based mini games to force you into buying a Natal set.

I'm willing to bet the trailer is not at all representative of the game's actual graphics too. Also, Natal kissing is going to be both hilarious and humiliating.

It'll no doubt be the same thing as Fable 2 but worse. Fable=Awesome, Fable 2= MEH, Fable 3= Poopoo

I think Microsoft's Gamescon conference was a little.........oversaturated with Fable 3 goodness. I mean, all they talked about was Fable 3, nothing else. Just seemed a little.....eh.

Still, good for all the people who liked the first Fable games. I like the idea that first you were puny, then you gained power, and then finally you become the most powerful man in Albion. Interesting concept.

and i was getting excited that they might make something new. oh well we get to play the same game as fable, except this time, instead of trying to be the best hero ever, you are trying to be king. the only way i can see the goal being different in fable4 is if you try to be ruler of the universe,so then it will end

UGH!!!! SERIOUSLY?!?!?! WWHHHHHYYYY!?!?!?!

Peter, its time for you to give Fable and your whole "Even more difficult choice" malarkey a rest... PLEASE! I enjoyed both Fable one and two, but at this point, i think Molyneux is just adjusting the Re-Release-O-Tron and letting it go about its business. I dont know why i even hoped for a new IP...

I have to say, I'm more excite about this idea for episodic releases then Fable 3.
It's like a demo, but if you like it you can continue where you left off and get into the deeper parts of the story! And if you end up not liking it, you don't have to get the other parts!

Sounds pretty good to me.

I agree with you Baby Tea, the episodic release of Fable 2 sounds brilliant. I hope other RPGs follow suit.

Well, I'm pretty stoked. I love the Fable series and, for all the hype and nonsense Molyneux will no doubt spout during the development period, there's always little bits here and there that shine through in the game proper.

So long as they keep the Fable 2 clothing system - or improve on it - I'll be happy anyway I imagine. I have some serious issue with playing avatar dress up.

I've wanted to get Fable 2, but unfortunately, I made the decision to get a Wii, instead of a 360. I was hoping that once good ol' Peter pulled his head out of his ass, he'd release it for the PC, or that there would be an emulator for it.
As soon as I heard news of this one, I'll admit, I was looking forward to it. But NO! It's fucking 360 ONLY.

Fuck Peter Molyneux, and fuck Lionhead. They are dead to me...
DEAD!

wait, they spent what? 5 or 6 years working on F2, and they're releasing F3 a year after 2? expect dissapointment my friends. the thought of fable 3 got me mildly excited, hoping they'd sorted all the problems out, but with a developement time that short, i doubt they can produce anything good

Disappointing. From the artwork I had assumed the story would star your character beginning the game as a king/prince or queen/princess and either losing their throne or giving it up to go adventuring. They've already done the rags to riches story twice over. It all goes the same way: small penniless orphaned child grows to be strong adventurer who kills things and makes enough money to buy all land for sale. The only difference apparently this time is that you get to buy the whole kingdom at the end. How long can you realistically continue to try and re-release the same game while adding expansions onto your character's ego potential?

I personally prefer the stories where the main character has everything: wealth, power, servants, etc, only to discover that everything doesn't matter if you don't have friends/a purpose in life and they end up through the course of the story giving up everything they once had to save the world or finish a quest, ending up with a simple and well deserved life with friends who care about them because of who they are and not what they possess, much more content than they ever were in their castle of riches. Now that's the kind of Fable I like.

The Fables we seem to be getting however seem to be of the commercialism kind. You make enough money/power to buy everything and that apparently equals happiness according to the Fable...

Well, as a Lionhead employee stated on the company forum, most of Fable 2's development time was spent working on the engine. He claims they are able to work at a far quicker pace and have been working on Fable 3 for a while now.

You have to understand that a lot of the dev time for F2 was creating the tools and engine from scratch. Our tools are now at a stage where we can work very fast (we can hot sync to the 360, rather than spend hours building and deleting an object takes seconds rather than 7 minutes).

And it's not like we have just suddenly started making F3 last week and are rushing it.
A little out of context but the points remain.
