Sometimes I have to sit back and remember that the first Modern Warfare was a revelation, a lot of fun, and a breath of fresh air... which Activision then repeatedly retreaded into mediocrity, to the point where the single player game is a punchline for everyone.

I agree with your points on why this is a great opportunity for a 'reboot' and have a lot of hope it will succeed.

"but the future setting lets it live in the world of allegory rather than "what if" thriller treatment. Exoskeletons? Railguns? A globally powerful PMC? Bring it."

Exoskeletons in real world use in the ship building industry.
Railgun being installed on a ship for testing.
Laser gun installed on a ship and undergoing testing.

40 years in the future, how much progress can be made in 40 years?

First powered flight 1903, 40 years later multiple different jet fighters are in trials.

First commercial microprocessor 1971, 40 years later individual retail multicore CPU's more powerful than every 70's and earlier supercomputer combined.

The future does look quite interesting.

I too am excited for the new Call of Duty. I've never hated the series, but it's not one that I follow yearly either. I don't care for multiplayer as much as most people, and I'm a sci-fi nut. So Modern Warfare never appealed to me beyond the campaign from CoD4. But I always enjoyed playing the story modes as far back as CoD2. They aren't great, but the spectacle has always been fun enough, even if I bought most of them used months after the fact.

Advanced Warfare though, I'm pre-ordering this one. I appreciate this long dissertation of why it looks better than previous entries. It was well written, well thought out, and well presented. My reasoning on the other hand, was a paper thin and simple as it comes. They've added robots and lasers. That's kind of enough for me. Sure they call them Exoskeletons or drones and projected energy weapons to make it sound more military and that's fine. But the end of the day, it's got laser blasters and robots. For a sci-fi nerd, that's ambrosia and I am eager to get a taste.

And I don't need it to be even Halo good really, I just want to enjoy the spectacle for a few hours and be done with it. I doubt I'll ever touch the multiplayer and unless they have a ZOMBIES mode or some analog of wave based survival I may only touch the campaign and then trade it back into GameStop a week later. But I'm truly interested in CoD enough to say I want to play it before it's even out. That's a first for me. Woe be to Sledgehammer if it sucks though.

Well, some people just never learn. You just happen to be one of those people. It's going to be the same old crap as always.

The Modern Warfare series got away from the War on Terror as soon as they switched the bad guys* to the Russians to appeal to extreme right-wing paranoiacs and Black Ops is a big confusing mess to me. But perhaps I let Yahtzee's opinions on those games color my own. As soon as I saw Kevin Spacey in the trailers, cast as the CEO of a globe-spanning PMC, I could smell the twist from miles away and months into the future.

*Or is every side in a CoD game after WWII supposed to be "bad"?

The problem I've always had with COD is that the advancing technology makes things too simple, and does not allow for skill based gameplay. At least in COD4, you could try some flanking in the admittedly constrained levels, and you at least had to aim at targets far away and know where to move to dodge gunfire. All these spectacle events just take away any necessity for skill from the player.

"It Runs As Far From Call of Duty: Ghosts As Possible"

True. So very, very true. I've bought every major CoD title since it's come out because I enjoy the mindless fun of the campaigns. I don't care that they don't make sense if you look at them too closely because sometimes it's fun to just blow stuff up. But Ghosts? Man, I hated that game. Terrible story, terrible gameplay, terrible pacing. Just...ugh.

As for the Female soldiers part, they've actually appeared before. In CoD 2, there's a female Russian in your starting squad. And in another (I think it's Finest Hour maybe?) You actually play as a female Russian sniper. But still, you're right. It's nice to see that they are putting female soldiers into the new game.

I'm keeping my eye on this one, and the more trailers I see the more hopeful I am, but I'm not filled with the same excitement that the past titles gave me. Ghosts left a very bad taste in my mouth. If Advanced Warfare does the same, then I fear it will be the last CoD game I buy.

It will probably prove to be incredibly popular... and once again EA will be playing catch-up to bring out a future version of Battlefield, when they've been sitting on BF2142 for years.

Funnily enough, this is one of the only reasons I'm vaguely looking forward to Advanced Warfare's release. 2142 is the game that got me into online shooters. So much nostalgia.

You're excited for the 11th Call of Duty game. That's right, 11th.

Well nothing new there. Game review sites usually have articles like "it might not suck" just before one launches, probably to help get a few more preorders. After that, it's safe to bash it for the cash grab that it is.

I remember an article about CoD I read on a different site where Activision boasted how it raised the development cycle to three years by having three developer companies work on it simultaneously... For one year...

Is there any way I can convince you not to do this? I understand, you're going to buy it anyway, but it still sends a message to the publisher that you're willing to pay for something purely on hype/advertising, which is not what we should be telling them. Will you please, Please reconsider?

OT: We'll see how it turns out, but I just wonder how long it will take to run the reboot into the ground too. That's what Activision does after all.

I am seriously considering this one mainly because it's a new series in the franchise. The first of a new series is always the good one and since I was extremely disappointed that Titanfall didn't have an offline single player campaign I am also getting this because it looks like the single player version of Titanfall that I wanted. I want to use my wallet to say that no offline single player = no sale

I'm not excited about Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, for one simple reason.

It's Call of Duty. The same game they release every year. It's the "point the middle of your screen at the enemy and press LMB" game. Game recycles the same song and dance for years, and years. And yet people are excited for it.

For a boring 'same shit, different game' gameplay, for disgusting graphics. And people are excited for it.

And wonder why the gaming industry is so horrible.

Well...

You've certainly given me a lot to think about.
Since CoD4, Ghosts is the only CoD I haven't bought (I've also acquired CoD1). I love the series. I stuck with it through MW2 and 3, and Black Ops 2, because I still hoped the series would actually live up to it's potential. I was pleasantly surprised by Black Ops, but felt let down more and more with each instalment. I played a friend's copy of Ghosts and was thoroughly relieved I didn't buy it. Now you've gone and given me hope that Advanced Warfare might actually be good, and I just don't know if I can take any more disappointment. I certainly won't be buying it until I've tried it.

The problem is, sometimes, a Call of Duty game will be released, and it will get everything right. Story, pacing, theme, level design, music, and it all comes together to make a stellar game.

Then they completely miss what made that game so great and churn out a more or less functionally identical game, but without any of the qualities of the good one.

Basically, with every CoD release, everyone hopes they get it right again. Then they trick themselves into thinking they have. Then they get disappointed, but remain content with the multiplayer still being good. There are a lot of people hoping that the next CoD will do for the series what CoD4 did.

Bring on BF2143. I reckon if the new Battlefront does well we'll see a 2143 before the next main series or Bad Company game. I'd love another WW2 or 'Nam Battlefield, PC missed out on 1943 and BC2: 'Nam was way too small.

As long as Advanced Warfare is better than Ghosts then I'm good. I mean, while Ghosts was an okay game, it was just that, an okay game. It tried to give a story but it kinda fell flat, and the multiplayer felt hollow for some reason. That said, I would still like a sequel to Ghosts, if anything, to see what happen of the war and Logan's fate.

On the subject of themes though, it makes me want to replay the COD titles I have and try to piece together a theme for each game.

Fifty years ago, everyone was going to be flying in hovercars by the year 2000. Fifty years later, still no flying cars. I mean, it's all well and good to talk about what past's future has held, but there's no guarantees wee see these applications, so it's not a question of "how much progress can be made in 40 years?" No, it's "what direction will we take in 40 years?"

And that might surprise you. In fact, it probably will.
