Xenoblade Chronicles' Shulk Joins Super Smash Bros

Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles and his sword, the Monado, join the fight in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS.

[a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/xenoblade%20chronicles"]Xenoblade Chronicles[/a] hero Shulk is the newest addition to the [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/super%20smash%20bros"]Super Smash Bros[/a] roster. Shulk was already revealed in [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137043-Super-Smash-Bros-3DS-Leaked-Video-Reveals-Three-Characters"]a leaked video[/a] earlier this week, along with two other characters, but now the official announcement has come through.

In the video released today by Nintendo, Shulk is wielding his iconic energy blade, the Monado, which was featured of the cover of the game. Almost all of Shulk's attacks shown in the video are based on the use of the legendary weapon.

Xenoblade Chronicles [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130257-Nintendo-Petitions-Dont-Affect-What-We-Do"]faced a challenge[/a] to get released in North America, with fans petitioning for the game to come stateside while Nintendo debated the logistics, costs, and potential sales of bring it over. Apparently, bringing over the game was a good idea, if inclusion of the lead character in Super Smash Bros is any indication of success.

Bringing Shulk into the Nintendo fighting franchise is a fantastic treat for Xenoblade Chronicles fans, but they have more to look forward to in 2015. Developer Monolith Soft announced [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/conferences/e32014/11637-Xenoblade-Chronicles-X-Story-Trailer-Gameplay-Unveiled-Update"]Xenoblade Chronicles X[/a] for Wii U at E3 last June.

There are at least two more characters to be announced for Super Smash Bros. Considering how long Nintendo dragged out announcements of characters for Super Smash Bros Brawl, it wouldn't be surprising to see them do the same with the next iteration in the franchise.

Okay that was not the voice I thought he'd have. XD

When he said "I'm really feeling it!" he reminded me of a TV announcer for a British kids' channel.

Even though I don?t actually know anything about xenoblade, it seems like a fun character and I like the accent.

I still think it?s unlikely that the leak Is real, if one more leaked character turns out to be real the leak probably isn?t fake.

I can't believe that no one has said this but

So, Zero Suit Samus isn't alone in the short shorts department. Now give me Captain Falcon's boxer outfit and all will be fine.

Looks pretty fun to play tbh.

Though I wish you could turn off the voice. Is that possible in Smash, I haven't played the series for a while.

Shulk time? You bunch of jokers, it's ALWAYS Reyn time! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMrdRaiCUug]

OT: Is that the same voice actor he had before. Rikki, Dunban and Metal Face both sound the same, but he sounds a bit "dweebier" than before. Ah well, happy Xenoblade was successful enough to make it into Smash Bros. See, Ninty? People overseas really did want that game.

Xenoblade Chronicles isn't a particularly cheap or easy game to find, but it's a damn good game. Shulk himself isn't particularly interesting, but he's likable enough to carry the story. Either way, the game is a sure winner that will kill 80+ hours (even more if you're into the grinding and exploring the game's absolutely MASSIVE map). Shulk's combat in-game is based around basic abilities (many context sensitive like the backslash deals more damage when you move behind enemies. You can also combo and status with your own attacks and your party) and various Monado attacks that either do damage or buff himself. His main "gimmick" (and used in this trailer) is how the Monado allows him to foresee attacks so either he can do an appropriate counter or warn his party and therefore change the future. It's a weird concept and does slow things down for trouncing smaller enemies, but it is a neat idea and provides the gameplay a bit of a unique edge.

I don't know the rules on referencing spoilers here, but I was hoping for a different character to be the next reveal. An older classic NES character.

Perhaps it's due to me not having played Xenoblade Chronicles or knowing the characters, but it's very difficult for me to not see this character's name and not interpret it instead as a fandom nickname for She-Hulk.

Now that would make SSB interesting.

Well, this song feels appropriate.

Great to see Xenoblade finally get represented in SSB. Shulk looks very impressive but I get the feeling he'll be one character that will require a lot of time and practice to master.

As for the leaked list, part of me wants to believe others like the Duck Hunt dog or Bowser Jr. are coming but the other part believes that what we've seen is not the final list. Just wish that Nintendo would offer up more reveals than one or two per month. -_-

I kind of suprised that they kept the British accent, didn't the US version had differenct voice casts?

Either way while I'm glad to see him in the roster (yes I saw the leak) but it's a shame they can't utilize his Monodo ability as in the future prediction other than blocking an attack.

Nope, they kept the original English language track.

Also, I wonder how many people will still whine about Samus' sportswear now that Shulk is sporting swimming trunks. Let it be known that Nintendo is all for equal-opportunity fanservice. All we need now is Captain Falcon in a speedo.

Reasons why I played Xenoblade Chronicles with the japanese audio. =.="

I find it humorous how both the other characters that show up in his final smash are characters I would have preferred to be in smash. XD

I think my one real disappointment with his moveset is that his Monado Arts aren't properly represented. Monado Purge, Eater and Cyclone could have easily been made into specials. Oh well, can't get too greedy I guess.

HA! I wish. In order for him to be accurate though, I think he'd be a bit too edgy for Smash Bros. This IS a game that Nintendo wants parents to be willing to buy for their kids, after-all.
