Doctor Who Review: This Is Almost Too Silly

This week's Doctor Who took a sharp left turn into silliness... and the end result is fun, if not very deep.

I don't know about anyone else, but what I took away from this episode is that most heroes don't set out to be heroes, it's history and/or legends that make them so. This is true of the Robin Hood of the episode and it's true of the Doctor.
Also I enjoyed watching the Doctor and Robin bickering, it was hilarious.

Seeing 12 take the pies out of everything was funny I'm so glad 11 is gone.

The whole episode was entertaining.

I really love how this season seem to be setting up The Doctor as doubting himself.

After 2,000 or so years of 'heroics', it's nice to see the character starting to question how much of his actions have been heroic and how much has been lesser-of-the-evils.

I REALLY hope the 12th Doctor sticks around for more than one season.
-There's rumors going around that Xmas special could be another regeneration like the 9th.

Let this season be the whole 'Doctor questions his own morality' and let the next season be 'The Doctor fixing the wrongs of his past'.

After those two darkish first episodes, I think this one's some welcome comic relief. Every scene between the Doctor and Robin was hilarious.

Also, my favorite bit of the whole episode:

After a serious of ridiculously perfect archery bulls-eyes from both the Doctor and Robin, the Doctor pulls out his sonic screwdriver

Doctor: "This..is getting silly."

He activates the screwdriver.

Cue exploding target.

I don't know; this episode was just too silly for me, and it had way too much in common, plot-wise, with the first episode: alien ship malfunctions, lands on earth to disguise itself, capturing humans to harvest what they need, one of the 'good guys' hitting on Clara despite already having a love interest (Vastra in ep 1, Robin here), the bad guy ends up being an amalgam of man and machine...it just hit all the same beats, only in a too-silly variation. I pretty much spent the entire episode thinking, "I have't had enough liquor for this."

Admittedly, I don't tend to like the sillier episodes anyway, but too much was the same as an episode we already saw, and that first episode (and the second episode, really) were both callbacks to earlier eps. It doesn't give me a good feeling about this season, even though I'm loving Capaldi's doctor (even though parts of this ep tested that, since Gatiss was still writing him a bit like Smith's goofier Doctor - that spoon duel. Nrgh) and how Clara has finally grown a personality.

That's basically Doctor Who in a nutshell though, at least 50% of episodes will be about that.

I personally lvoed this episode, Who is much better when there's all this banter and it doesn't take itself entirely seriously. The moments when it is serious I sort of cringe out, but this was great.

As a history buff who lives in Nottingham, this episode really annoyed me. I did like the message at the end though.

tom riley did a great job as robin hood. good to see him letting his hair down and having a laugh. makes a change from Da Vinci's Demons which i love for different reasons.

im still raising an eyebrow about the sonic screwdriver suddenly turning into a weapon in this season. its honestly getting to the point for me i only watched it for tom rileys robin hood rather than the dr

I like to think the homing arrows had high explosive in them - and the doctor merely set it off remotely with the screwdriver.

Loved the reference to Carnival of Monsters but this episode reminded me a little too much of The Time Warrior .

Fun episode, and a nice shift after the last two weeks. It is always fun to see Capaldi be the funny yet grouchy Doctor because he does it so well (Attack eyebrows, anyone?)

Overall, good episode. Looking forward to next week.

They already did that with 10. During the Journey's End episode the Dalek Master forced the Doctor to see the truth of himself. He's a user. He uses people until they're of no use to him then he discards them without a second thought.

Don't get me wrong, its shaping to be good in the newest season, but its not exactly new territory for the Doctor either.

I've never been able to watch Doctor Who. I hate camp, silly sci-fi, and this is just camp, silly sci-fi set to 11.

Or so I say. I suppose I watched Farscape happily enough, and sometimes that was 10 at least on the same scale.

You know, I think what Doctor Who really needs is to give all this shit a rest and draft an attractive blue girl.

I knew he looked familiar!! Thanks, that was killing me.

I particularly like that Robin and the Doctor basically had the Little John fight on the bridge... except without quarterstaves.

I don't really see Clara's interactions with Robin Hood and Vastra being particularly similar, and the similarities between what's happening with the crashed ship is on purpose, setting whatever the promised land is going to be.

As far the episode being deep goes, the show has never been deep. Very clever story telling often, but never especially deep or intelligent in any real practical way.

Also, I keep seeing people saying the first two episodes are remakes/call backs to previous episodes, Dalek and Girl In the Fireplace, episodes that actually had wildly different themes and implications for the Doctor to this season's first two. Clockwork robots and the idea of a good Dalek don't make a remake, just like the Angles turning up in Time Of The Angles didn't make it a remake of Blink.

The ending really annoyed me (how does just shooting the arrow somewhere in the side of the ship give it a boost? Seriously just...how?) but overall I liked it. I tend to have a bit of a soft spot for stuff that's silly and knows its silly and doesn't try to be anything else. Also, decent twist with Robin being the genuine article, didn't see that coming

Isn't that the point of this series so far though? Robots in the first episode were looking for the promised land, as were the robots in this episode - I imagine the similarities are intentional.

I also like History and also live in the Nottingham area, but if you are watching a Who episode for historical accuracy you are watching the wrong program - especially so if it is about Robin Hood who may not even have existed in the first place. Having said that the castle they showed looked awful even compared to actual Nottingham castle which isn't great to begin with.
