Saints Row Writer Heading to Valve

[tweet t=https://twitter.com/SteveJaros/status/511209731453890560]Steve Jaros, the creative director behind Saints Row, is leaving Volition and joining Valve Software.

Valve is a company that places a strong emphasis on storytelling, whether in the form of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97474-Why-Does-Valves-Storytelling-Work-So-Damn-Well>carefully crafted world-building, or <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109178-GLaDOS-Origin-Story-Told-in-Full-Portal-2-Comic>surprisingly engaging webcomics. That just makes Valve's writers all the more important, and now a new player has been added to its roster: <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137124-Saints-Row-Writer-Supports-Change-for-the-Representation-of-Women-in-Games>Steve Jaros. If that name isn't familiar to you, you might be more familiar with his work: Jaros was the Studio Creative Director with Volition, where he co-wrote the first three Saints Row games and oversaw work on Saints Row IV.

The last we'd heard from Jaros, he was telling our own Greg Tito <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/interviews/12176-Saints-Row-Gat-Out-of-Hell-Expands-Volition-s-Gang-Fantasy-Serie>about the Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell standalone expansion. But now Jaros has announced via Twitter that he's leaving Volition after a decade of working with the organization.

"The past 10 years at Volition have been life changing. I've gotten to work with amazing people and made friends that will last a life time," Jaros wrote. "I'm super proud of the work we did on Saints Row, and am excited for what Volition does in the future, but it's time for me to move on ... I'm looking forward to new adventures at Valve Software."

It's not clear what Valve projects Jaros will be working on just yet (feel free to insert your own Half-Life 3 theory here) but Volition's success <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/editorials/reviews/10521-Saints-Row-IV-Review-Hilarious-and-Over-The-Top>with recent Saints Row games means it'll probably be worth paying attention to. Gat Out of Hell is expected to launch on January 27, 2015.

I wish him luck in his upcoming role in writing for all the multiple, various games Valve has announced for release.

Cool. I look forward see the fruits of his work with Valve . . . in 2025.

In all seriousness, Volition is losing a major talent in Jaros, but it was clearly time for him to move on to other creative opportunities.

They're adding Jaros in with Wolpaw, Faliszek, and Laidlaw?

Yikes. The snark levels in any future narratives will be extreme.

Half Life The Third (With Purple Orange Dildo Bats) Confirmed!

I wonder if Volition will now go back to the Saints Row 2 way of making Saints Row games.

AW SHIET. Ninja'd!

That said, considering Valve's current writing team, I'd say this is an excellent counterpoint to the bittersweet news of Microsoft getting its paws on Mojang. I'm uncertain as to the future of the one and only decent True Sandbox on the market, but the next Valve projects are sure to be narratively epic.

You were ninja'd 2 posts up lol

Hmm, I wonder what game he'll be working on. Hope something comes out soon as we need more quality games.

Oh gods, I hope so. That alone would make the wait worth it.

They could even top it off with a gravity gun that's fused with a dub-step gun.

[sub]I'm envisioning using the amped grav-gun to grab enemies and, upon flinging them forward, the game goes into slo-mo and 'the bass drops'.[/sub]

The shit storm of reactions from fans and non-fans alike would be epic.

*sigh*

I liked the writing in the Saints Row games. If volition was going to lose their writer, couldn't they have at least lose him to a developer that develops games?

But why? Valve don't make games any more.
They do though, the portal franchise, the Dota franchise, TF2, and others I'm sure. What are you on about?

I can't be bothered to read this article, but the first thought I had when reading the headline was, "That's the end of his writing career." If he's put in charge of Half-Life 3 we may never hear from him again :)

How interesting. I can't help but wonder what kind of work this man will be doing at Valve? Hopefully it is writing work on an actual game, because I highly enjoyed Saints Row and most of Valve's games. If not, its likely to write more comics.

Still wish Valve would announce some actual games or something...

It was meant as a joke.

Dare I ask who Pinkamena is? As I'm kind of curious. Because if Poke'mon can be made scary, (Although, to be fair, looking for creepy stuff within the games themselves aren't that hard if you know where to look) then this should be...interesting, to say the least.

It makes sense he is leaving Saints Row as that series is now supposed to get a fresh start with a new writter as he had already stated (not exactly the new writter part but it makes sense to add the two)
