Matt Damon to Return as Jason Bourne

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass will revive spy character for a 4th time

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass were supposed to have closed the book on the Deadline reports [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/bourne?from_search=1] that Damon and Greengrass are being sought to return for a new Bourne.

The new film (which at this stage has no formal announcement, storyline or start-date) will presumably segue into a 7/16/16 slot that Universal has already reserved for "Untitled Bourne Film," which up to now was presumed to be the sequel the Aaron Cross story from Legacy at one point set to be directed by Justin Lin. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/7365-Furious-6] The fate of that film is now unknown.

Beginning with 2002's The Bourne Identity (itself based on a 1980 spy-thriller by Robert Ludlum), the series follows the adventures of Jason Bourne (Damon) an amnesia-sufferer who fights to regain memories of his life as a specially-conditioned super-soldier - only to discover that he had not necessarily been fighting on the side of good. Greengrass directed the 2nd and 3rd films, following Doug Liman helming the original.

I know Damon once made the joke himself (on either Daily Show or Colbert) that if they did another one they should call it the Bourne Redundancy, hope they go with that.

Considering how much I loved the original trilogy, I'm actually fairly happy with this!

...So long as they keep it up to the original trilogy's standards...

I'm not a big fan of action movies, but I thought the first Bourne movie was pretty good. After that, I found it a bit harder to enjoy- I never really felt that Bourne was in any real danger or that the situation was out of his control after the first movie, and so his plights lost some of their urgency.

Hope they remember to buy some tripods too because the previous films are hurt by the constant shaky cam during action scenes.

I hope they don't make him the ultimate liberal conspiracy hunter, again. Holy Cow Jason you found out the war in Iraq was a bad idea?! Stop the presses!

Lol Jeremy Renner, GTFO. Whether I go to see this or not, I'll rest easy knowing Renner isn't mugging and failing to act the whole way through it.

I am torn with this announcement, I found the first three Bourne movies to be better then Legacy, but Legacy was a movie that was more enjoyable to watch over Supremacy and Ultimatum because they didn't decide to go with an ungodly amount of "shakey-cam" with Legacy and I doubt they would go all the way back to the style of Identity because they ignored it for the last three movies.

I'm sorry, but what was announced here?

Greengrass and Damon are being sought - according to this no contracts have been signed, and there is nothing in here mentioning either one has any interest. The Deadline article only goes further to say that there are negotiations happening, but again, nobody has actually said that they're doing it - for that matter, for all we know the studio has only gotten as far as calling up some agents and saying "Let's talk about this."

This headline is seriously misleading.

I wish that they would wait until he is in his fifties. Old Bourne would be much more interesting to watch. I feel the screenwriters and directors would almost be compelled to do something new with him at that point. Another movie at this point would just be a safe rehash of what's already been done to death.

I am probably in the minority, but I actually rather enjoyed Renner in Legacy. It's a shame he seems to be typecasted into that kind of role these days. I was actually hoping for that Bourne/Cross movie they were considering a while back...

I loved the first one and while I enjoyed 2 and 3 the shaky cam in the action sequences gave me a headache so I would honestly be more excited if they were getting a different director.

And is Jimmy Kimmel going to be the main antagonist? That would actually be funny.

^This.

Damon and Greengrass have (as is stated in the article itself) said they don't want to do anymore Bourne films. There's been no word from either of them about this changing at all. They're merely being "sought". And even if one of them has expressed interest, Damon said he wouldn't do another one unless Greengrass is on board, and I think I recall Greengrass saying something similar.

Thus, as much as I loved the original Bourne movies, I'm chalking this up to "not going to happen" unless I hear a more definitive statement from Damon or Greengrass.

If that's what you want to see then read the books, the films only really borrow names and some locations from the books but other than that they are very different. Basically as the books go on Bourne gets older and it's interesting to see how the character changes over the course of the series. Theres a bit in one of the later books where he has to infiltrate a Russian black ops training base and he really struggles to pull it off as he's not as physically able as he was when he was younger and he knows it. He has to adapt how he fights and does things which is something that's never really touched on in other works I've read, James Bond never has to worry that he's not as fast as he was so he can't just Rambo the entire mission.

If you've only seen the films then some things that are different in the books are:

- the 'Jason Bourne' identity is explained and actually makes a lot more sense than in the films.
- Marie is a major character and much more interesting.
- Conklin isn't a villain as he is in the first film. He's actually one of Bourne closest friends and one of the few he can trust. (It's a travesty what they did to his character in identiy)
- Carlos the jackel is an awesome antagonist.
- Bourn is even more of a badass.

I do like the films but I think I prefer the story in the books to the generic 'evil government black ops division is evil' trope we see in then films.

OT

Wonder how they are plannig on picking up the story after ultimatum? They pretty much finninshed off the arc of the antagonists, Treadstone is gone, Black Brier is shut down and McAllen is dead. Bourne is 'dead' and Landry knows the truth. Where can you go from there?

Edit for typos

*shakes fist* damn you touch screens!

The first movie was the best - I often found myself saying "Ah-ha, that's clever!" - both in the techniques he uses and the overall plot. As the series progressed it turned into more of a generic action movie. I watched all three movies for the first time in a row, so no nostalgia there.

The first bourne had so many little details you could only glimpse after the Nth viewing. The meticulous attention to detail, the core idea of outsmarting, not outpunching your opponent, the extensive use of real-life techniques, the leaning towards realism, or at least authenticity - that's what I loved about the first bourne.

There's room and the market for another bourne movie. Hell, Casino Royale took a lot from the bourne series. But the bigwigs at Hollywood won't understand, sadly, what made this movie tick.

It's an extremely hard movie to make. You can't have gas canisters that explode from hollow-point rounds, you can't have your main character successfully win a direct firefight against more than a couple of trained marksmen.

Basically, I'm sick of this:

I want more this:

I'm not sure you could say - strictly speaking - that Bourne's quest is expressly liberal. Unless the idea of an out of control security apparatus controlled by people unaccountable to the government they're supposed to serve and who begin wiping out witnesses when it looks like they'll be caught is something only people on the left would find compelling. It isn't like he went off on specifics of current events during the original trilogy, he was on the run from, well, the out of control security apparatus controlled by people unaccountable to the government they're supposed to serve and who begin wiping out witnesses when it looks like they'll be caught.

And lest we forget, the exploration of ugly, morally corrupt tendencies within intelligence networks is a longstanding trope of the spy genre, going all the way back to Le Carre at least.

(obviously, I am not arguing that Damon or Greengrass don't have well known political views separate from these films, or that a certain weary frustration during the Bush years didn't at least partially inform the tone of the two movies they made, but I think the themes could be easily and correctly applied to governments controlled by either political faction, as recent years bear out.)

That's my biggest problem with the Superman vs Zod fight in Man of Steel. They're knocking each other through buildings, Superman goes tumbling through the streets, Zod tosses a Lex Corp gasoline tanker at Superman, and Cal casually floats between the tankers, ignoring it as it detonates destroying the building behind him with a nonchalant "I just farted and exited the elevator, so it's someone else's problem now" look on his face. I thought to myself "You just got punched through a goddamn building! At least wince a little."

I didn't mind it in the first Bourne movie, but every one since, including Legacy, failed to have any sense of tension or urgency, cuz they so ably and readily dispatched any situation. So I'm not eager to see Bourne return. Based on the previews of the Ultimatium movie, I thought that he was at least in for a compelling fight. But even the chase sequences are "meh. Just padding out the runtime here. Don't mind me."
