Sony Plans I Know What You Did Last Summer Remake

"I know what you did last Summer... because we already made this movie once before."

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's Scream may be turning into a dead on arrival, [http://screenrant.com/mtv-scream-tv-show-plot-character-descriptions/] but it looks like the 90's other big original slasher series is sticking to the big screen: Sony is eyeing a remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The new film [http://deadline.com/2014/09/i-know-what-you-did-last-summer-remake-horror-movie-sony-834570/] will once again be based on the 1973 book by Lois Duncan, with Oculus writer/director Mike Flanagan and co-writer Jeff Howard. Neal Moritz, who produced the original, will do so once again. Sony is aiming to have the remake ready for 2016.

Released in 1997 and starring a cast of then-new talent including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr and Ryan Phillippe; the original I Know What You Did Last Summer followed a group of high-school seniors who, after striking and killing an unknown person with their car in a hit-and-run accident, agree to hide the body and cover up the crime. One year later, they find themselves stalked by a mysterious hook-wielding killer who claims to know their secret. It was followed one year later by I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in 1998 and the straight-to-DVD I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer in 2006.

God Sony, are you really this desperate?!

Eh, at least it's not a movie that came out in the last 10 years.

But, eh, make a new movie. It's a slasher film, only so much you can do with that.

Sigh, again the movie industry shows they have a complete lack of creativity and resort to remaking movies that aren't even 2 decades old. Lame!

Right, because horror movie remakes have turned out sooooo well before. And everyone has been demanding this, right?

Seems like there's no dead horse Hollywood or the games industry won't dig up for a few more thwacks in the hopes of it oozing money like a squishy pinata

This could work okay, if (and ONLY if) they do a similar sort of thing to Evil Dead - i.e. make a new film with a similar structure, but NOT the same, and include nods to the original while also carving out a new identity for itself. That's why the Evil Dead remake did so well - it took the original as a launching pad and was then different enough in parts to feel like an independent entity, while also being similar enough to make a good tribute to the original. If an IKWYDLS remake can achieve that, then I don't mind so much. If not... well, I don't spend money on crap films, so I won't be losing out.

EDIT: That's just what I reckon regarding the film's potential. I know it won't be any good, and don't intend to see it anyway, but still, it's nice to post something that's relevant without repeating what the rest of the crowd have already said. Even if I do agree...

My only real problem is the question "Why does this NEED to be remade?" What development in film or narrative technology has advanced to the point where the original is no longer viable? If I remember correctly there are no big FX shots or action sequences that could be better handled with new CG tech. There's no way that this remake is going to inherently benefit from a 3D upgrade. It's a pretty straight forward story that can be told entirely through practical effects. Really they could have made this movie in the 60s and all of the film making techniques necessary to make it great would have been available.

So if you're going to remake stuff, fine, I give in. It's going to happen. But why not concentrate on something that might actually benefit from it?

Why? Personally i never cared for the original or it's genre, but what are the people who do care paying to see different this time? Improved blood sfx? Maybe teens who were too young or didn't exist back then will see it, don't know why anyone else would.

Who even cares about this series enough for them to want to remake it? Why not just release a brand new slasher movie instead of remaking one that wasnt all that great in the first place.

Everyone in entertainment is just out of ideas at this point. Video games, movies, it's all becoming the same shit we saw years ago. At least I have marvel movies, until they inevitably fuck something up too, and then entertainment is dead.

I'm getting to the point where new movies and games are losing my interest, Guardian's of the Galaxy has been the only movie to catch me of late.

While this reboot seems par for the course for Hollywood, the more interesting thing in this news blurb is the fact that there is gonna be a scream TV series. After seeing the so bad its good train wreck that is From Dusk till Dawn the series, I might just be looking forward to a Scream TV show.

Well considering that they've been hemorrhaging money from all sectors with not even their gaming division making up for the losses, they need to find anything to keep afloat. It also doesn't help that their film division is complete ass as far as franchises go.

Come now...this is Sony we're talking about.
It'd probably be half an ass...

So... is it actually going to follow the book this time? Or are they going to bastardize it into a slasher movie again?

(The answer is kind of obvious but a man can dream.)

Why? They're terrible! They're so bad that they probably got seriously Riff Track'd. Make something GOOD.

"Scream" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" worked because they were fairly original, especially at the time and given what the film landscape was like, and they both sort of played against some of the expected tropes of movies that came before them, while still maintaining a sort of classic feel.

Remaking something that was sort of successful because it was sort of making fun of all the horror movie remakes ("Summer" did this as much as "Scream" but did it differently) is just plain out ridiculous. I mean what kind of spin can you put on this? Have a horror movie where the characters are self aware of being self aware?

1990s Horror movies are some of the ones I was into as a young adult, and really I'm pushing 40 and I wish they wouldn't drag them through the mud. This is less likely to be nostalgic than just plain sad.

IMO if they want to retread older stuff, they should consider going back to some of the older, cheezier, 1980s horror tropes. The kind of stuff that movies like "Scream" and "Summer" were making fun of, but still works if done well. We haven't had a really good supernatural killer for a long time. By now I'd hope they could do something modern in the vein of say "Freddy", "Jason", or "Michael" without having to actually remake those characters (attempts to do this have been made and were mixed at best).

Come on Sony, find someone creative. I'd imagine most people on this site could come up with a workable idea that would be better than "let's remake "I Know What You Did Last Summer" ".

-

On a totally unrelated note, I've actually been sort of waiting for someone to come up with the idea to bring back "Jigsaw" as a vengeful spirit or something, and sort of turn the "Saw" movies into a prequel about what made the infamous killer come back from the dead so bad to begin with. You could come up with a lot of warped stuff if his trials could be truly surreal and not limited to what could hypothetically be done by a skilled engineer. Sort of like how we all know Freddy was a Maniac before be became a killer dream, but nobody ever did a movie (to my knowledge) elaborating on his infamous murder sprees. You take a mortal horror movie guy (it doesn't have to be Jigsaw) and then do a sequel that also starts a new franchise with him as a supernatural baddie.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I get tired of regular old insane killers, especially when it ultimately comes down to how many different ways they can find to stab someone. It might have been "torture porn" by some people's standards but at least SAW mixed it up a bit and got away from the usual "scream and stab" routine. :)
