Wasteland 2 Features Music From Miracle of Sound - Update

Wasteland 2 includes a track by Gavin Dunne of the Miracle of Sound project.

Update: Dunne has offered some of his thoughts on the news. This article has been updated to include those.

Gavin Dunne has created music inspired by video games for years, crossing both music and gaming genres. His project, [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/miracle-of-sound"]Miracle of Sound[/a], created a track for the soon to be released game [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/wasteland%202"]Wasteland 2[/a]. Now that song, [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/miracle-of-sound/8361-Cries-of-a-Dead-World-Wasteland-2"]"Cries of a Dead World"[/a] will be featured in the game when it launches September 19th.

The version of the song featured here is the version that will play during the credits of the game, while the version linked above is the original Dunne created.

"By far the most frequent comment on my videos and songs is 'Why are you not getting these put in the games?'," Dunne told us. "It's something I've wanted for a long time and have been trying to do." He also hopes getting his music into Wasteland 2 will lead to more opportunities.

"It's awesome to get to work with Brian Fargo, a personal hero of mine for creating my favorite ever series," Dunne said on the Miracle of Sound [a href="https://www.facebook.com/MiracleOfSound/"]Facebook page[/a], referring to Fargo's work on the [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/fallout"]Fallout[/a] series.

The Wasteland 2 project has been fan focused from the beginning. The game was [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120380-Wasteland-2-Mastermind-Wont-Quit-Kickstarter"]crowdfunded on Kickstarter[/a], and Fargo appreciated the impact fans can have on development through the platform and said he intends to use it again. The inclusion of fan-created music fits perfectly into this mindset of development.

Besides Dunne's track, Wasteland 2 includes music [a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/165585/Wasteland_2_Kickstarter_launches_with_900K_goal.php"]composed by Mark Morgan[/a], who created the soundtracks for Fallout 1 and 2. Fans of the first Wasteland know that the original Fallout games were considered its spiritual successors.

Dunne worked with Morgan and Fargo to make changes to the original version of "Cries of a Dead World" to help it fit better into the game. "They would give me advice & criticism and they helped me steer the original version in the right direction for the game," Dunne said. Dunne also made some other adjustments to the second in-game version of the song. "I changed a clumsy lyric, pulled back the vocal effects to get a more raw, 'dusty' sound, made the outro longer and remixed it to add more emphasis to the dark atmospherics so it fit in with Mark Morgan's amazing ambient soundtrack a little better."

The Escapist first started hosting Miracle of Sound in 2011 with Dunne's tribute to Dragon Age 2, [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/miracle-of-sound/2965-Age-of-the-Dragon-Dragon-Age-2-Song"]"Age of the Dragon"[/a]. In that time, Dunne has covered a variety of games, most recently with [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/miracle-of-sound/9734-Assassins-Creed-Unity-Music-Video"]"My Revolution"[/a], inspired by the upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity.

This also isn't the first time a game company has taken notice of Dunne's work. Miracle of Sound projects [a href="http://miracleofsound.net/about/"]have been featured in promotional content[/a] for Mass Effect 3, Assassin's Creed 4, and Watch Dogs, but this is the first time one of the songs has been placed into an actual game.

Fans of Miracle of Sound don't need to worry that Dunne is about to move on from doing the project. "I plan to continue making more varied & experimental songs as well as the good old catchy ones everyone's used to," he said. Also, Dunne is looking at his collection of music from before Miracle of Sound. "I will continue to release more of those along with some new more personal songs."

Wasteland 2 arrives on Steam and GoG this Friday, September 19th.

Congratulations to Gavin. He deserves it. I've been a big fan since Gordon Freeman Saved My Life, and I adore nearly all of his music.

What? My hard-earned Kickstarter dollars went to pay for that hack?

Kidding! Seriously, I'm looking forward to hearing the final version when my rewards arrive. Thanks for adding your touch to what is promising to be a great resurrection of the franchise, Mr. Dunne.

This is actually my favourite Miracle of Sound song and Wasteland was my first kickstarter.

Just two more days until Wasteland 2!

Major congrats to Miracle of Sound, absolutely deserve the recognition. Normandy should have honestly been in either Mass Effect 2 or 3, that song was amazing

Congratulations Gav.
After all the great songs you have made actually having your own song being in a game was well earned. In fact it should have happened sooner.

What if he plays the game and hears his song in it and is inspired to write another? Wouldn't that be some kind of songwriting paradox?

From what I've played of the Beta, it's what you'd expect and what you want. A slicked up, 3D mish mash of precisely what we loved about Wasteland and Fallout 1+2, without comprimise. A shitton of skills, loads of loot, gobs of conversation options with whole forests of branches, tight gameplay, cool characters, a massive world, free form ways of doing quests, no handholding, all hardcore, fully immersive, 100% Brian Fargo fried gold.

OT: Well done Gavin, really glad to hear it! Always enjoyed your stuff, and looking forward to future installments :)

I couldn't tell if it was the song, or one of the ads decided to suddenly play in the background, but this sounded terrible.
Probably an ad, but I've long given up trying to find out which ad or how to shut it off.. So I will never bother clicking on these sort of articles again.

And because the argument WILL be made... No, installing Ad-Block so I can enjoy articles on a site is NOT my responsibility. If they want ad-based revenue from me, then they'll have to consider non-intrusive ads. All I have to do is look for the content somewhere else, like a simple YouTube search so I can actually hear the media that was intended for people to hear without being layered with annoying Bull-Shittery...

EDIT: There, once again the ad started it's cacophony for a few seconds, then paused itself. I didn't mouse-over or anything. Abso-fucking-lutely annoying. Goodbye Escapist. It's been fun(ish).
As far as I'm aware, The Escapist doesn't use audio in its ads. I think what you might find is that it's Youtubes inbuilt ads having a glitch with the imbedding, nothing they can do about that.

Nah, I get loud, unmutable ads on here all the time :/ I remember Kross saying to report them when they come up once because the site doesn't want them but they just won't go the fuck away. If I leave an Escapist tab open long enough, it *will* play a video ad with sound. It happened when I was watching Jimquisition once!

OT: Ah, I bloody love that song. Should be a great way to cap off what's sure to be a great game! Now hurry up and release Level 5! :p

I should clarify what I meant by my post, since it seems we are short on comprehension but overflowing with misconceptions, making us too hasty to think things through.

By claiming to offer no more ad-based revenue, I meant that I won't be returning to The Escapist. I only came back this time to clear my name. By claiming that installing certain software is NOT my responsibility is far from an advocation of such software, nor was it an admission of use.
Plain English is HARD to understand sometimes I guess.. or assumption and delusion must be far better than reality.

If clarifying what I meant results in a ban, so be it. Frankly, I don't expect anything better than censorship at this point..
