Sleeping Dogs Sequel: Triad Wars, is Free-to-Play, PC Only

Triad Wars is an open-world action strategy game where players compete against each other to create a criminal empire.

Sleeping Dogs developer United Front Games has today revealed its follow up to the sleeper hit (no pun intended), entitled Triad Wars, which is, as predicted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135698-Sleeping-Dogs-Dev-Working-on-a-New-Free-to-Play-Title], an online, open-world, free-to-play, PC-only title.

The developers describe Triad Wars as the "flip side to Sleeping Dogs"; while Sleeping Dogs took you on a ride through the criminal underworld via protagonist Wei Shen, Triad Wars will be all about how that underworld was built. The reveal trailer you'll see to the right features multiple devs talking about the game, and shows plenty of work-in-progress footage. From the looks of things, the core game, that is, the running, shooting, and driving, seem to be very similar to how Sleeping Dogs was handled.

Players will be able to build bases, control turf, and run rackets (such as money laundering), all the while defending themselves from rival gangs, which are controlled by other human players. The devs say it will be based on a version of Hong Kong, but just how many players will be fighting over each "Hong Kong" remains to be seen.

"Whether you choose to excel in extortion, hacking, money laundering, stolen cars, or even just good ol' fashioned violence is strictly situational and will be representational of your playstyle. It's your city to claim, and how you do it is entirely up to you," explains the game's about page [https://www.triadwars.com/news/about-triad-wars].

If this has piqued your interest at all, you can actually sign up for the Triad Wars closed beta right now on its official website [https://www.triadwars.com/beta-registration].

Square Enix, which published Sleeping Dogs and next month's upcoming HD re-release: Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition [http://www.amazon.com/Sleeping-Dogs-Definitive-Edition-Limited-Xbox/dp/B00MA5TSEM], will once again be involved.

dafuq?

....no really dafuq?

spin-off sure...I can get behind that

but this? this gimmicky "lets try a different way to make money" game? THAT is what we get for a seaquel? to a game that had a half decent story (you know, for a game) and was fully single player

well shit..I am disappointed

MEH.
I'm not one for MMOs, F2P or not, and this is a sad thing for me to see.

As a Hongkonger, I just KNOW the moral guardians in my hometown are going to brew a shitstorm over this game. Some concerned parents or religious chaplain's going to throw up a bunch of editorials over how this game's corrupting kids in Hong Kong into joining triads, and I'll admit I kind of see why. This game's likely not going to make it to my city with anything less than an 18+ rating anyways.

Gameplay wise, I don't see how different this game is from Sleeping Dogs aside from its multiplayer and the Zynga-strategy aspects. The game assets for the game are pretty much the same as Sleeping Dogs, and from the clips I saw they even ripped out the same map from the first game. I'm willing to believe that it's just a prototype for the game, but I'll have to see some more media from United Front Games first.

Also, considering Square Enix's "outstanding" performance with the first incarnation of their MMO Final Fantasy 14, I'm just going to keep a cautious eye on this one.

Yeah piss off, there's no way I'm going to play the sequal to an awesome single player sandbox offline game that's taken all that away to become a f2p mmo. Sick and tired of publishers trying to push us to always be online, it's not that my net can't handle it (100mb/s cable, I never have issues with speed/connection), it's that I wont waste money on a game that'll be turned off someday. Offline option or GTFO!

Where did the inspiration to go f2p come from?

I really enjoyed the first one and was looking forward to a sequel. But this? Why turn a strictly single player experience into a MMO?

*sigh*

As always, the game industry can't help but fuck up the good things they have.

Yet another franchise I can feel okay about not supporting now. Fuck F2P, fuck multiplayer and fuck this decision.
Way to cock it up, guys. Well done.

Not exactly what I would have wanted but depending on its business model I might give it a chance, it might be a nice foil for the upcoming GTA V multiplayer.

Thats if the F2P isn't lame, if it is fuck it.

Well there goes any interest I had in this game. Take one of the best open world singleplayer games in years and turn it a F2P MMO. Fucking genius.

Wow I am really getting tired of games being revealed with brief snippets of gameplay viewed over a developer's shoulder. If you don't at least have some screenshots, don't announce your project.

Anyway, this kind of reminds me of APB, which was a good idea with terrible execution. Maybe this time they'll actually follow through on it.

Ugh, yet another franchise fails to Square Enix Spin-Off Syndrome. Definitely skipping this now.

Actually, this sort of makes sense. It wasn't game sales that convinced them to do a sequel, it was DLC.

That being said, I'll be passing. The multiplayer element was only cool because I could play with friends, but it's PC only so I can't play with them. And I dislike the F2P model most of the time, and don't trust the guys who were charging for money packs and like three dollars a skin to give me a fair price.

A shame. I really liked Sleeping Dogs. It was one of my favourite games with Dogs in the title.

You cannot use that gif without properly shouting "Barrowman!"

It's just wrong.
