Newest Assassin's Creed Game is on iOS with In-App Purchases

Assassin's Creed Identity is the first Assassin's Creed action-RPG game on mobile devices, but it's one of many games in the series releasing this year.

Ubisoft soft-launched Assassin's Creed Identity, a free to play iOS game, in Australia and New Zealand yesterday. This makes Assassin's Creed Identity the fourth announced Assassin's Creed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/assassins%20creed] game for 2014.

The game, set in Italy during the Renaissance, has in-app purchases for in-game items and is free to play otherwise. Players can customize the look of the assassin character in Identity through different outfits and color variations. The game's store page on iTunes also notes that there are three classes to choose from when creating an assassin.

Other than in-app purchases for items, players can also obtain items by unlocking them through a decryption system.

Controls support tapping or dual virtual stick controls. The randomly generated missions are also much shorter than those on main Assassin's Creed games to accommodate for an on-the-go mobile play style. Players are able to hire help from their friends to complete mission objective types, of which there are 16. Touch GamePlay has uploaded a 22-minute video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mzCGX2q3Z4] displaying some of Identity's gameplay.

Assassin's Creed Identity is the fourth game expected for release this year. Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/assassins%20creed%20unity] will be a standalone game playable only through the Assassin's Creed Unity season pass.

Identity requires at least the iOS 7 operating system and an iPad 3 or iPhone 5. Depending on the soft-launch results, Ubisoft will release the game worldwide and could work on putting it on Android devices.

Why am I not surprised at Ubi doing this?
Seriously, why am I not?

I'm sure that it also has a feature in which you can only do so many "missions" per day/other time limit, but have the option to buy more. Since this seems to be very standard with mobile games.

From the looks of it no one in the entire Triple A industry learned the lessons from Activision's complete and utter whoring of the Guitar Hero franchise that drove it ruin. But, if this site has taught me anything it is that this industry never seems to learn anything. Personally, I can't stand the Assassin's Creed franchise anymore. As far as I'm concerned, Assassin's Creed 3 was the final nail in the coffin and all the other games that have come out after are just zombies masquerading as video games. They're just not fun anymore.

It drove Guitar Hero to ruin, but made Activision a lot of money. The publishers remember the latter part and bet the company (sometimes literally if you're THQ, Midway, Atari) on having the next big thing on hand when the current big thing is mined out.

Of course the danger of this is that the next big thing fails to materialise and you end up in the situation that Activision and EA are in now, reliant on a few core franchises that have to make all the money (and are all suffering steadily diminishing returns). They're both trying to make the next big thing, but EA appear to have failed miserably in this year's attempt and the jury is still out on Destiny as a long term success, so we'll see.

I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of this decade EA is just EA sports and nothing else though.

More like Identity Crisis! Am I right? Huh? Huh?

Seriously Ubisoft, pick an audience and stick to it. When you do stuff like this you only risk losing cash trying to appeal to an audience that doesn't have any interest.

I'm glad I never got into this series, keeping up with this nonsense would drive me nuts.

Considering that Command and Conquer was recently put down behind the wood shed, The Sims has been threatened with closure if their newly released game isn't universally praised, and the next installment in the Battlefield franchise has lost all consumer confidence in it already... That might actually be a very real prediction.

What's left? Mass Effect spin offs, Dragon Age sequels, Battlefront 3 and their awful online F2P games (plus The Old Republic MMO which has to be showing signs of rigor mortis by now)

Yeah, EA have killed most their franchises, a few more are on their way out, and hilariously they have no idea why any of them failed. Not a single clue.

Huh, looks visually pretty decent in the video, except for choppiness.
But don't think it'll work well on most devices.
Especially when they inevtiably (SOON!) start throttling speed due to heat.

For the rest... psh! FOUR titles this year?
And SO much innovation!

Oh well, as long as the microtransactions piss people off enough to make them cough up a lot of money, all's sweet, huh?

Didn't Capcom do this with Resident Evil back in 2012, they released 3 games with only one of them being good and the fifth live action movie as well as the CGI movie Damnation. More does not equal better Ubisoft, You may make money from this but you'll exhaust your fanbase. I swear if this ends up being the nail that kills the fucking franchise it would be too late for me to care.

Have they even managed to break even on that? It was not a cheap game to make, and went ftp fairly soon after release.

Assassin's Creed IV is far and away the best game in the series.

It was also the game that made me realize that I just can't stand the core concept of the series, due to Ubisoft inability to do anything with the potential the first game showed me.

So I won't be partaking in any non-pirate themed AC games from now on. This gross milking of an already over-saturated franchise shows that I probably will be missing nothing of value.
