Static Shock Returns as Live-Action Digital Series

DC's electrifying teen superhero to become a live-action digital series

Warner Bros. has been making big waves with DC Comics superheroes on TV between Static Shock is back! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/arrow]

Originally created in 1993 by the late Dwayne McDuffie [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/6074-Worlds-Within-Worlds] for Milestone Comics, Static Shock was a groundbreaking independent-imprint of DC that focused on a universe of predominantly minority superheroes from minority creators and has since been merged with the mainstream DC Universe continuity.

The character became the best known of the Milestone line after being adapted into a well-regarded animated series that was integrated into the DC Animated Universe. The character is an African-American teenager who acquires electromagnetic super-powers from an accident and adopts a superhero identity to battle supercriminals in his city. The new version will be overseen by Reginald Hudlin and Milestone/original-series veteran Denys Cowan. No release date or timetable has yet been set.

Apparently turning superhero cartoons into live action shows for some odd reason instead of keeping them as cartoons is becoming a thing these days.

Well, color me intrigued! I enjoyed the animated series a lot and I'll regard this series with cautious optimism. Hopefully they won't cock it up and go 'oh, looks like a superhero series with a POC lead doesn't appeal to viewers'

Yeah really weird considering how much live action comic based films are making /s

It's probably got to do with the terrible toy sales from the cartoon Young Justice, Green Lantern and Beware the Batman that DC are giving up on cartoons and focusing on live action as that pulls in more advertising revenue afterall Flash, Arrow and Gotham are all doing well.

Well at least they are bringing him back. I really loved this cartoon as a kid and hopefully they will do justice to it.

Static was one of my favorite super heroes as a kid. I can't freaking wait to see a live action version of him, going to be so wicked!

Wow this is great news! I cant believe static is finally going to make it to tvs across america again! Im stoked, I loved watching static as I grew. Him and his adventures were always a joy to behold. I don't quite know how I feel about it being live action but I guess i can let it slide if they do a good job with it.

Heres to hoping they put a shock to my system once again after so many years! GAH, I cant wait :D

I'm... actually, I'll be honest with you. I'm kinda seriously angry with this news actually. I am a big fan of Milestone comics. I respect what they had to go through to get where they were. I have a large collection of Static, Hardware, and Xombi comics. I even was pulling New 52 Static, and DC has mishandled, ignored, and downright abused Milestone Media's characters.

DC doesn't care about Milestone, and has shown so over and over. They aren't planning on using the characters again, unless the license is nearing lapse. They won't use them in team comics, and they only pull out Static to keep their grips on the character, not because they want to use him for anything substantial.

I will have to refuse to see this, even if I really want too, and hope Milestone can pick back up it's IP and publish under someone else.

Nice, it was one of the best DC superhero cartoons out there. DC should stick to tv shows, they seem to do pretty well at them.

I suspect its a mix of both growing popularity among adults and that CGI can actually pull this stuff off. The Flash isn't necessarily gorgeous, but it isn't laughably bad.

Dwayne McDuffie Would be pleased, the cartoon was great. It's just a damn shame the Nu52 comic sucked Super monkey balls!

I'm not sure if i should put this out there as a possible casting choice for this movie but seeing as Will Smith's career took off after he stared in Fresh Prince of Belle Air, this could make a good jump off point for Jaden. As long as it doesn't become another After Earth (cringe) I wouldn't mind giving the kid a shot with this.

This news made me more happy than I thought I would be... Now, as long as they don't screw it up [that much], I'll be a happy black guy...

If only they'd done this a few years ago, Donald Glover could have been Virgil. That would have been a sight to see.
Ah shit... That would have been awesome as fuck!
