Star Wars: Episode VII Finishes Principal Photography

Star Wars: Episode VII has advanced one big step further down its path toward the big screen.

Back when Star Wars: Episode VII first received its release date, there were some who understandably worried that the film's tight timeframe wouldn't <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129229-Star-Wars-Episode-VII-Its-2015-Or-Bust-Says-Disneys-CEO>give it enough time to be the fantastic feature it arguably has to be. After all, the film didn't start shooting <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133534-Star-Wars-VII-Has-A-Finished-Script-And-Is-Already-Filming>until April 2014, leaving it little leeway to finish for its <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129439-Star-Wars-VII-Gets-Official-Release-Date>December 2015 release date if anything <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135605-Harrison-Ford-Returns-to-U-S-For-Rehab-Will-Miss-6-8-Weeks-Star-Wars-Shooting>went wrong. That being the case, it's recently been revealed that Episode VII has officially wrapped up its principal photography.

This news comes via way of Twitter where crew member James Rose posted an image of a hat and note given to the film's cast and crew as the film came to its close. The note stated the following:

To the Extraordinary Cast and Crew of Episode VII:

It is a true honor and absolute joy to come to set every day and work alongside each of you. Your professionalism, passion and patience is more deeply appreciated than we could ever express. From the deserts of Abu Dhabi, to the Forest of Dean, to the stages of Pinewood, you have risen to every challenge and been as wonderfully kind as you are brilliantly talented. Our ambition here is large, of course, and it must be: we are here to make a film that entertains millions of people, of all ages, for generations. To create an experience people will cherish watching as much as we will cherish having made it, together. How lovely it would be if you had, in addition to your name on the screen, some actual real tangible proof that you were part of it! Here, then, is that proof. Wear it well, wear it healthily, wear it proudly. But, mostly, thank you.

The film's cast and crew were also spotted (and photographed; thanks <a href=http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=124671#/slide/1>ComingSoon!) at a party over the weekend celebrating the end of shooting. Among the attendees were expected faces like Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. Other notables included cast members John Boyega and Daisy Ridley as well as Avengers 2 actor Andy Serkis and nerd favorite Simon Pegg. Pegg's presence was perhaps especially noteworthy as it has been rumored that he <a href=http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=121191>will have a cameo of some sort in the film.

None of these celebrations, of course, mean that the film is near being finished. Even with the principal photography there's still likely to be a metric ton of post-production work to finish as well as potential re-shoots and additional scenes. That said, this is still a significant step forward for Episode VII and Disney's efforts to revive Star Wars in the movie-space once again.

Jar Jar Binks didn't kill Thrawn, Kyle Katarn, Revan, Saba, Jaina, ext. He was an annoying character, but had no real, lasting impact.
Anyways, Galen Marek is worse than Jar Jar.

I'm no expert on filmmaking, but that does seem like a really quick turnaround for such a large project. I can only think of two scenarios that fit here:

- Disney exercised its considerable influence and expertise to keep things moving quickly and efficiently, or
- Everything was done half-assed and rushed, and Disney hopes to shore up the cracks in post-production

I'm hoping for the former, but you never know....

I guess you haven't heard that after the acquisition, Disney deemed the entire EU catalog to be non Canon. All source material that is not the 6 movies (plus the Clone Wars cartoon) is now classified as "Star Wars Legends". This essentially means that Disney is allowing their content creators free reign to continue the story, without worrying about conflicts from earlier work. Whether anything from EU gets incorporated into the new Canon is up to them.

My point is that, rather than throwing out the whole EU, they could have selected the best parts of the EU and make them G canon. The Thraw Trilogy, Correllian Trilogy, Han Solo Trilogy, Knights of the old Repulic, some of the Dark Forces stuff, X-Wing books, Ghosts of Tatooine, parts of the courtship of Princess Leia, ext. A lot of that stuff wouldn't interfere with what ever Disney wants to do and just ads lore to the universe.

I mean, are they really going to try to set books during when the Thrawn Trilogy was supposed to happen? Is there even the slightest chance any book or cartoon set during that time that could be good enough that it's worth not only erasing Zahns work, but also alienating fans?

I'm not saying keep 100% of everything. There's a lot of trash in the EU too. As much as I liked the books when I was younger, Crystal Star, the Callista Trilogy, that Glove of Darth Vader Trilogy, ext, those books are pretty wanky. Maybe pull in some interesting ideas from them, but they can be largely ruled non-canon.

The mystery box none-sense is part of the problem. Since I don't know what, or how much they're keeping, I'm dreading the project more than excited about it.

Granted, there are some good stuff in the EU and there is a chance that Disney will incorporate some of it to their Canon. It's just currently at a "Wait and see" state, where we might see something or we might see nothing. They probably wanted to do it this way to keep the element of mystery alive, regarding what we can expect from the films. As I understand it, the new Star Wars Rebels cartoon is showing some hints of content creators borrowing elements from the old lore. They introduced an antagonist who's an Inquisitor, a title held by agents tasked with hunting rogue Jedi that survived Order 66. This was EU stuff.

Now, I haven't seen the new show, so I don't know if they're doing a good job with it or not.

As for what I would like to see, I have to admit, I was recently reading up on Wookiepedia and found that someone had created an origin myth for the Jedi that made Anakin's prophecy make 1.000.000% more sense, so I'm all for that being incorporated into the Canon.

Thank you for emphasizing my point. He may be a good actor, but he's a comedy actor and that right there is the problem. Simon Pegg is a clown and last time he played a clown and got directions from JJ Abrams, it resulted in the 2009's Scotty being flushed through the Enterprise's engine. Calling it now, new Jar Jar.
