Right, so you've got a story about a serial killer, and it needed some bullshit about the town being haunted? A bunch of people getting murdered in the really real world is a story by itself, you don't need to insult the victims by tacking fairy tales onto their murders.

I can't speak for Devan, but from my POV it emphasized how real world horrors are far more terrible than the supernatural ones we imagine. Also, Devan is a horror writer, his POV is infused by it.
