Where's Radio?

Where's Radio?

Some of you may have noticed that it's been a few weeks since the last installment of Escape Radio, and that we've been unnecessarily mum on the subject. Sorry about that. Sadly, I can assure you that there is no criminal conspiracy involved. As much fun as that sort of thing might be.

The truth is, as I mentioned in a previous post, I got busy and went out on some field assignments, which precluded my working on the show for a couple of weeks. And then we got busy making new editorial calendars and such, and then Shawn went to India (damn him). So there's been a confluence of things going on here, all of which have added up to a complete lack of Radio. Again, sorry about that.

So what now?

Good question. I wish I could tell you an exact date on which you will be able to expect a new episode of Radio, but I can't. Not only are the time constraints unpredictable, but we've also decided to take advantage of this forced hiatus to look at new ways of doing the show and integrating some expanded content.

Your feedback, is invaluable in this regard. What's missing from the field of game podcasts? What makes a podcast special in the way that The Escapist is special? Which developers do we most want to hear from? And about what? These questions will be on our minds as we ponder the future of Escape Radio, so if you have answers, let us know.

As to the question of when we'll be back on the air, all I can say is I don't know yet, but I'll post about it here as soon as I do. Thanks for listening, caring and waiting.

Ah, so there is life left in the radio.

I think I speak for the majority of the listeners when we say that we enjoy the chemistry/sexual electricity that you and Certis have in the show. You have great banter, good dialogue, and great voices for the podcast. As long as you don't change that, then there won't be much that will displease me (I laughed for about 3 minutes when Certis squeeled with glee when you did Mickey Mouse).

That being said, there are a few things I want from the show: Mainly, I want to hear more news that isn't mainstream. The bits about American McGee were good since I hadn't seen it in big headlines, and the interview with Bethesda was excellent. As long as you guys don't start going for bits of information that we already know.

Developers I'd like to hear from... Hmmm. Remedy, Irrational Games, Bethesda (re:Fallout and TESV) and I suppose any developers that take a story intensive approach to game development. I realize those development houses I just mentioned are pretty "hot" right now... Therefore getting an interview would be "tight" (w3rd).

I think adding a Q&A segment adressed at yourselves would be a serious asset to your show. Perhaps listeners could submit 3 - 30 second or less questions in audio format (via email) and you could discuss and respond on the show. I find the "reading of emails" to be cold and impersonal, and I think you have a broad and intelligent enough listenership to generate some excellent questions about the gaming industry, culture etc. It would only take a good 5 - 10 minutes in a show to exhaust the persons questions, and this segment needn't be in every episode. This would certainly add an element of interactivity, not to be found in other gaming podcasts (as far as I know anyhow).

Anyhow, that's it for now. If something else comes to me, I'll edit or something.

seriously,

Me too. That was great. I think Mickey should become a special celebrity guest one episode, maybe next time disney put out a crappy mickey mouse game.

The bits I really like are when you talk about good games that I have never heard of. Like Armidillo Run and Dice Wars. I read boat loads of gaming news and reviews and whatnot, but I hadn't heard of either of those games till you mentioned them on the show (I think it was you guys that talked about dice wars??), and they are both great!

Gaming Steve does this as a part of his regular reader (listener) mail section and it works great.

As far as interviews go, how about catching up with David Jaffe? I haven't really heard much at all from anyone about his HL project, and from what writing of his I've seen, he seems to have a passion and sense of humor that would transfer well to the podcast.

I think you need a wacky musical sidekick on there, sort of like an Escape Radio one-man-band version of Paul Schafer. Possibly one who drops the F-bomb a lot. Yes indeed, I think that would be a huge and immensely valuable addition to the show. Ideally, this man should also be paid handsomely for his services.

I have to say that I liked the way Next Gen's last podcast ( http://podcast.next-gen.biz/?p=10 ) handled having Scott Miller on. Bringing him in as a guest host rather than as a pre-recorded one on one felt a lot more natural. That they managed to get him to open up on some interesting topics didn't hurt either, of course. I realize that when you record the podcast may be an issue when trying to do this on Escape Radio but if you and Certis could pull it off, I think it'd work.

Love the show, and I trust your instincts on how to produce it, Russ.(although I shed internal man-tears when hearing that people thought you guys were having too much fun)

Also, I demand an update. That's just the kind of guy I am.

In a desperate attempt to fill the podcast void since the last "Radio" show, I have begun downloading episodes of NPR programs...please guys get something, anything up there. I also rented Chibi-Robo only based on the GWJ Radio recommendations of yesteryear.

Come on, when's the band getting back together?

GWJ conference call is so weak these days, Shawn is the only one who seems to play more than one game a month and shows any sort of knowledge about the industry and gaming whilst the other guys on the show bleet on nonsensically about Gears of War or the Xbox 360.

Anyway with the news about Dr Phil and the Wii, now is the perfect time for some more impressions! http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/12/dr-phil-prescribes-wii/

Couldn't resist:

<img src=http://www.filmfodder.com/movies/reviews/radio/images/radio.jpg>

And I'd like to offer my services in the musical department as well. We just need to dupe someone into getting one of those 4-channel iPod mixers and we're in business. Oh, and we need a bass. And drums. To the craigslist-mobile!
