Metal Gear Solid Goes FPS With Ground Zeroes PC Mod

A new mod has been released for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes transforming the game into a first-person stealth shooter.

One of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138396-rockstar-games-grand-theft-auto-v-first-person-mode>the niftiest additions Grand Theft Auto V received when it was re-released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was its first-person mode. Coupled with modified controls, the new visual perspective offered players a completely new way to play and enjoy the game's open world experience. Now, thanks to the work of one clever modder, PC fans of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/metal%20gear%20solid%20v%20ground%20zeroes?os=metal+gear+solid+v+ground+zeroes>Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes can now enjoy the same sort of conversion.

Created by a modder named Pao, the Ground Zeroes FPS Mod was released late last week and transforms the game's third-person experience into a first-person stealth shooter. As with many mods though, there are some caveats. Namely, the mod currently includes some technical kinks that prevent the conversion from being a perfect one. One existing bug makes objects disappear when the player gets close to them. There are also issues with the visibility of the player's body when not aiming, as well as problems with the game's pistol animations. Pao, on the mod's page, also recommends that players backup their game files on the off chance that the mod creates any unexpected problems.

Speaking as a Metal Gear fan though, I feel safe in saying that these issues are relatively small when weighed against the opportunity to experience the excellent <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/9053-Metal-Gear-Solid-V-Ground-Zeroes-40-Demo>(albeit brief) gameplay of Ground Zeroes in a new way. Gamers interested in taking Pao's mod for a spin can find <a href=http://www.nexusmods.com/metalgearsolidv/mods/3/?tab=1&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fmetalgearsolidv%2Fajax%2Fmoddescription%2F%3Fid%3D3%26preview%3D&pUp=1>it here. Give it a download and let us know if the series stays solid (nycuk nycuk) when you turn it into an FPS.

I think it's missing some black cut-out from the edges where the right eye was supposed to be. This is Big Boss after all.
Not that it matter much, since Big Boss aims with his eye patch anyways.

I'm sure there will be some kind of hamfisted in-game explanation for that. Nanomachines, probably. Or the magic of nuclear irradiation.

I've had a go with this and whilst it's a decent novelty I'd never actually play the game with it, at least not until it's brushed up and the FOV's a lot higher. Now mods that change the FOV I love, no more staring at Snake's ass all the time.

Eh, kind of neat. First person was already in the game, they just made it so you run around while doing so. I'm just waiting for someone to use MGSV as a total conversion to remake MGS1 or the classic MSX games.

Someone tried that on the Source Engine with the original Metal Gear. It got shot down from official side, so any attempt from anyone else probably would have the same fate.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I think even David Hayter was providing his voice for the project. Shame. Maybe Kojima will take things full circle and do a re-imagining of the MSX games after V.

Actually there is an explanation in a codec call in one of the games he explains that he used to aim with both eyes, when he loses one he uses the same method somehow with one eye, the position of the gun is irrelevant. i'm not sure how it works but at least it's not nuclear radiation or nanomachines although i would accept anything since this is metal gear ;)

For closer ranges (say, anything less than 50 meters), especially CQB ranges, you generally keep both eyes open to keep your depth perception, and avoid tunnel vision. Also helps with your brain overlapping the views of each eye making the sights on your gun less visually obstructive. Combine that with the ludicrous muscle memory from all those years of fighting and training, and it's no surprise it's a minor inconvenience at short ranges.

At longer ranges though, where you can't rely on sheer muscle memory and approximation, he'd have to switch shoulders so he could use his left eye for optics.

You mean it's out on PC already? Man, I really need to keep up with these things.

I just noticed that myself. It hasn't unfortunately. Apologies for the confusion, I've corrected the error.

And this is why I love PC gaming. Sure, the FOV could be increased, because I would have a hard time playing this in its current state, but seeing as this is a mod, I approve of it based almost entirely on the "this is what some people can do in mere days" principle.

It is Big Boss! He doesn't need to aim!

My theory is that he uses his eye patch for echolocation, his superiorly trained nerves tingle each time the eye patch vibrates from any form of sound, no matter how small.
