Chappie Has The Power in New Trailer

Sentient robot battles mechs, Wolverine and Die Antwoord

The first trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138404-first-trailer-for-district-9-director-neil-blomkamps-chappie] for director Neil Blomkamp's Chappie caught many action fans by surprise by presenting it's story of a newly-sentient robot torn between violence and gentility in upbeat tones.

The new trailer should set said fans minds somewhat at ease, then, as it displays a more action-centric tone while revealing more of the plot: Chiefly, that "Chappie" starts out as part of a whole army of police robots, and that his development is opposed by Hugh Jackman as a human villain piloting a plus-sized mech. As in the previous trailer, South African musicians Die Antwoord are heavily featured as part of Chappie's human entourage.

The film is being positioned as a comeback for Blomkamp, who scored big with the Oscar-nominated "Superman" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/876-District-9] it's going to be hard for me not to love this movie.

I don't understand. Why Die Antwoord? They're a parody hip-hop group, what's their place in a science-fiction action film touching upon all kinds of philosophical questions regarding the nature of consciousness and person-hood?

Also, I gotta love the silliness of what Jackman's character says. "The problem with artificial intelligence is that it's too unpredictable." And human intelligence is not then?

I like how much science fiction there is these days about the Singularity. Kinda makes me think we're close to achieving it.

So now the film look like Tetra Vaal 2.0 with a hint of that District 9 mech with a dash of Robot Cop vs ED 209.

As much as I want to like this, it looks pretty damn goofy.

This better not make me sad like those two Short Circuit films did.

Also, I now realise that I have been playing far too much Titanfall recently because when I heard the South African accents in the trailer, I immediately thought of Sergeant Blisk.

Does he have The Touch as well?
*snerk* I was originally thinking the same thing until He-Man showed up.

Yes...I'm worried this will dabble into that as well. Though this being the internet, I'm more worried that...

*several Johnny 5/Chappie shipping fanfiction spontaneously appear*

Ah, FML...

This movie is gonna break my damn heart ...
Most likely if memory serves Bloomkamp's movies tend to end very badly for the main protagonists. Well Elysium and District 9 did at least.

Also anyone else keep thinking Johnny 5 is alive while watching this?

More like Short Circuit mixed with District 9.

I find the movie interesting though, even if it is a familiar movie. I'll check it out when it shows up. Partly because I think the male scientist lead is the same actor who play Zuko in the Last Airbender movie, and I actually think he's pretty decent of an actor.

Alright, am I the only person who want's Neil Blomkamp to do a Battletech movie? Seriously, his special effects team is godlike!
Also the trailer has gotten me interested, I adored District 9 and thought Elysium was an entertaining (if disappointing) flick.

I saw this trailer minus the title or any context, and briefly thought I was seeing the intro to a live action Appleseed film based on the robot designs...

Also apparently it wasnt totally random of me to think this felt like a short circuit reboot, based on the posters here >.>

Neill Blomkamp is the modern-day Paul Verhoeven.

The new go-to guy for violent Science-Fiction films that have great action set-pieces!

Personally I think of Mass Effect's Geth when I see this. Especially the part where they start shutting down the other robots, and CHAPPiE gets mad. That's where I think this differs from the Johnny 5 thing, is CHAPPiE is potentially the start of a new "Race" of beings (and the bad guys seem to be worried about that very thing). It looks like fun, as well as being interesting, hadn't heard of it before. Looking forward to it.

And so much Yes to the He-Man bit. :D

Who is going to file the first lawsuit?
The guys who say they've remade Short Circuit without buying the rights?
The guys who say they ripped off the look of the ED-209?
Or the guys from Appleseed over the look of the droids?

Blomkamp is now completely out of ideas and 5 minutes away from being a punchline to the same jokes as M. Night Shyamalan.
It was a good run anyway... no wait it was one pretty good movie.
