The Witcher 3 (Finally) Goes Gold

Ready for some dark fantasy monster slaying? CD Projekt RED's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has finally gone gold.

For almost a year, any news about <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/132833-The-Witcher-3-Wild-Hunt-Delayed-To-2015>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's release date addressed <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138950-The-Witcher-3-Wild-Hunt-Delayed-To-May-2015>why it needed to be pushed back. Thankfully, that period is at an end - CD Projekt RED just confirmed that The Witcher 3 has gone gold.

"We worked so damn hard over the past three years to bring you this game," CD Projekt RED Studio Head Adam Badowski said. "From the corrupt nobles in Novigrad to ancient monsters lurking in deep forests, to the bustling cities, colorful ports and breathtaking vistas; all the people, all the places -- we literally spent tens of thousands of hours to turn all that into an adventure that will kick your ass and make you want to come for more. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has gone GOLD and will soon be yours!"

This is exciting news for fans, considering The Witcher 3 was hotly anticipated since its first reveal. Not only will it bring CD Projekt RED's trilogy to a close, Wild Hunt expands its monster hunting gameplay <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/previews/12901-CD-Projekt-Red-The-Witcher-3-The-Wild-Hunt-Preview>to a Skyrim-esque scope. It also sounds like this game also won't be for the light-hearted, considering <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139751-The-Witcher-3-Will-be-Very-Difficult-CD-Projekt-Red-Doesnt-Mind>quest designer Philipp Weber claimed Normal difficulty is still very challenging.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will finally launch on May 19, 2015. It will be available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 platforms.

So this is CD Projekt RED's first AAA title, right?
I consider triple A to be games with a team numbering in the triple digits.

Will be interesting how the game will come out. Might not be as thematically cohesive. Still can't wait to play it, though. :D

Here's hoping for a bright future for CD Projekt RED!

Someone explain to me what "going gold" is.

Retail copies are being printed and prepared. Special editions are in full production.

Work on the game has stopped and now all teams are relocated to post-release patches, DLC, expansion packs and the next project (CyberPunk 2077).
Thanks.

I'm glad actually, I'certainly been wonderinget what Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be. I really like the trailer for some reason.

Urgh. UUUUUUURGH! Christ I have mixed feelings. I LOVE Projekt RED, absolutely love them, GOG.com is nothing but a little slice of heaven. But god damn it I just can't get into the Witcher series. Ugh. I'll look up some reviews and see how the gameplay handles and MAYBE I'll give it a shot.

At this point I have mo idea what AAA means. I think it means budget or marketing. Nothing more :p

Witcher 3 is made on a smaller budget then most mid-tier US games though. What was it... 15-20 million dollars?
MEtro Last Light was around 9. STALKER was 10-20.

Meanwhile Destiny is 500 million (though half at most was for making the game) and CoD is 100+ million :p.
You know, if there would be one benefit to the world in Shadowrun becoming real, there would be official listings for A, AA and AAA companies. So that's one benefit.

I think it's safe to say Witcher 3 is AAA. Last Light most certainly had the polish of a AAA game, and I don't know much about STALKER but I hear a lot of good things about it.

Though Destiny and COD shows exactly how you can piss away money without doing much with it. Seriously, COD recycles the same engine every year, how do they spend so much money on it? And neither game had anywhere near as much polish as Last Light. Oi.

Originally AAA games was business-term, meaning games that got an A (highest mark) in the three important categories; customer acclaim, critical acclaim, and commercial success. Basically games that can justify a "Game of the Year Edition".

Though nowadays it simply means multi-million budget titles, that strive to make a true AAA game, and only rarely succeed.

I can't wait to pick up my copy of the Collector's Edition on May 19th. I plan on also buying a GOG copy too.

Funny enough, I recently explained this in my post here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.872724-Pillars-of-Eternity-has-Gone-Gold?page=1], announcing the Pillars of Eternity had done just that :)

I'm so glad to hear this. Great news for a game I'm dearly looking forward to. I actually pre-ordered it, something I very, very rarely do. Saying that, I may not be playing it on release day anyway, since I have a lot on in both life and gaming just now. But I don't mind waiting either...with a likely EE (Enhanced Ed.) coming at some point, perhaps some time after release is a good thing...CDPR games are great and only get better with time and ongoing support.

I'm a little perplexed by two things within a week of each over. First Grand Theft Auto V is actually released on PC, now The Witcher 3 can't be delayed for the umpteenth time.

This game can't drop soon enough. I think I'll keep playing Bloodborne all the way up to release of this.

CD project red hasn't disappointed me yet. So, I'm semi-hyped. XD

I need to get a PS4, my PC won't handle it and there are a couple of exclusive I'm not interested in and my girlfriend wants to go halves on getting one anyway so may have to do that soon.

I wouldn't. The biggest problem with the Witcher series is that it's the Witcher series. If CD Projekt Red moved on from this grimdark bullshit I'd love to play the RPG I'm sure they could make, but their next game's Cyberpunk 2077 and I expect it to be just as dour.

I know what you mean, I've got both other witcher games but for the life of me I haven't been able to get into them like I've wanted. I'll still get this since they always have really good physical releases and this does look pretty cool so far, like a version of skyrim where what you do matters.
