I would like to add Gunman Chronicles (Half Life) as an honorable mention. Cool setting and gameplay, and highly moddable weapons.
I don't know if it's the undisputed king of mods. You could make the case for Total War and the dozens of entirely new games that have come from those engines; I mean, there are not one but two Warhammer mods (Call of Warhammer and Rage of Dark Gods) that are more expansive and inclusive than the official upcoming Total War: Warhammer.Caramel Frappe said:Was wondering why Skyrim didn't make it onto the list at first but then it hit me ....
Skyrim would take the spot in any countdown when it comes to mods. Like, seriously ... Skyrim is the king of modding and would probably win first place in any category. I think in the future, there should be 8 of the most famous Skyrim mods or recognized, something like that. Other then that, well done with this list
Not to mention the Make Something Unreal contests, which launched at least one developer (Tripwire Interactive) from modder to full-fledged company. It also gave the winners a license to use the Unreal Engine and a chunk of cash. That kind of support is rare for modders.Areloch said:As for the pure modding-ness, I'd have to say that the Unreal Tournaments would win out over Skyrim. The reason? Because you have access to pretty much all functional code. Skyrim has a few, but big limitations in what you can modify. Totally swapping out or implementing new animation sets is a chore, from my understanding, and it isn't possible to do total gameplay conversions, to turn Skyrim into an RTS, for example.
I would say the reason Skyrim is still the king of modded games lies in a trinity of features:Thunderous Cacophony said:I don't know if it's the undisputed king of mods. And that's not even touching the juggernaut that is Minecraft...
Was just about to post that one myself. It was a surprisingly well done mod.fractal_butterfly said:I would like to add Gunman Chronicles (Half Life) as an honorable mention. Cool setting and gameplay, and highly moddable weapons.
Oh hell yeah. Massive props for the memories. Although to be fair, I think Insurgency is a very nice spiritual successor to Inf.Areloch said:Little sad no one suggested Infiltration, for Unreal Tournament. That game set the bar for realistic modern military details, and still has some features that haven't been implemented anywhere else. And I believe it was one of the very first games to implement iron sights, which is a fairly big deal.
