Southern Bastards Variant Cover Denounces the Confederate Flag

Southern Bastards artist Jason Latour has created a special cover for the comic's next issue featuring a dog eating the Confederate flag.

Whether you're for or against the continued use of the Confederate flag, there's no denying that June was not a good month for the symbol of Southern rebellion. Tossed once more into the limelight by the horrific church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina, it's been at the center of arguments between people who value it as a piece of heritage and those who want it removed from use by state governments and public officials.

Standing among the latter is Jason Latour. The artist behind writer <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/jason%20aaron?os=%20jason%20aaron>Jason Aaron's small-town crime/football comic <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/southern%20bastards>Southern Bastards, Latour found himself feeling particularly affected by the shootings in Charleston and the debate over the Confederate flag. This came to a personal head after a pair of activists were arrested for scaling a flagpole outside of the South Carolina capital building and removing a Confederate flag hanging there. Responding to this, Latour created a special variant cover for Southern Bastards issue 10 featuring a dog shredding the flag. Accompanying the imagery will be the words "Death to the Flag. Long live the South."

It's Latour and Aaron's hope that they'll be offer proceeds from the sale of the special variant cover to the victims of the Charleston shootings. Even if they can't do that however, they've at least succeeded in making a strong statement about where they stand on this divisive issue. A much stronger statement even than doing something silly like <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141350-The-App-Store-is-Removing-Games-that-Include-the-Confederate-Flag>banning Civil War games because they include the flag.

Southern Bastards issue 10 will hit stores on July 15th.

It's a shame that he's doing something so dickish for a good cause, you'd think he could do something good for the same cause.

This is pandering. Nothing more, nothing less, and certainly not newsworthy.

Guys, guys, this changes EVERYTHING! It's like a dog, on a flag! Clearly now, it will resolve any issues based on political matters and crazy people and or bigots will never again dare use the confederation flag as a smokescreen for dickery. And it was obviously necessary to remind folks about the moral corruption inherent in slavery etc.

You know why this doesn't mean much? It's because you see flags mutilated all the time in comics. I probably have no less than 10 comics with covers that are mutilating a flag (usually the US Flag) in my collection. It doesn't happen everyday or anything, but it has never meant much in the past.

But if it makes the artist feel good, that is fine too. And it certainly makes the people who have distaste for the flag feel good, which is also fine. And anyone who see's this is offensive, it's fiction and doesn't mean much. Hell, the confederate flag has been mutilated within comics pretty damn often so far as I can tell. But not usually in major press books.

Soooo why is everyone suddenly mad at the Confederate Flag now? Or.. again I should say?

Or is this like Video Games and Violence? Someone killed people and associated with the flag, so now the flag is evil and should be banned and removed?

If they weren't we'd have to talk about guns. Can't have that.

Not as much as we loooove making sarcastic, passive-aggressive jabs at completely unrelated issues, apparently.

Seriously though, what does artistic integrity have to do with this? This type of bullshit seems to have increased dramatically since the event that shall not be named. There seems to have been a dramatic increase in the number of posts that are just excuses to ignite old grudges by dragging in unrelated issues, or comparing current topics to other topics discussed in the event that shall not be named, or comparing someone's post to the opinions expressed by the enemy.

The flag in games or shows or books because history is not an issue. The flag around now when there is no South is probably what the issue is all about. It goes like this...

People down there - You know the type - keep holding onto the old confederate flag like means something in the here and now, when it doesn't. It's like Texas Secessionists. It's an obsession with an unrealistic and dead cause. The South will never come back. That's pretty much what's going on here.

I haven't actually read scalped but I'll go out on a limb and assume they are similar

gritty, violent, corruption being a major plot point and theme....a condemnation of the south and also a sort of love letter at the same time, Id recommend it anyhow

Seems like I have another comic series on my radar then. I was quite apprehensive about Southern Bastards because it mentions a football angle, which I'm not really into. But with the next trade of Genius not coming out for quite some time one has to spend money one doesn't really have on something, right? And I still have to start Scalped too, which has plenty of volumes as is. Oh boy, bye money.

It really is a shame that this got riled up because a bunch of assholes decided to jump on this issue for whatever political agenda they have. The confederate flag represents a legitimately more disgusting regime that some idiot racist with a gun, it represents a history of idiot racist traitors with guns and should of been taken out long ago.
