Marisa Tomei Might Be Spider-Man's New Aunt May

If reports are true, The Wrestler and Empire's Marisa Tomei will be Aunt May in the latest Spider-Man film.

Next to Uncle Ben, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138531-Sony-Rumored-Considered-Young-Aunt-May-Spin-Off-Of-Spider-Man>Aunt May is one of the most important figures in any Spider-Man movie. This is the woman who raises Peter Parker after his parents are killed, teaches him right from wrong, and maintains a strong presence across Spider-Man's entire career. That means casting May is just as crucial <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141324-Marve-And-Sony-Cast-New-Spider-Man>as the hero himself. And if Variety's sources are correct, that role has just been filled by Academy AWard-winning actress Marisa Tomei.

It's worth noting this information has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or Sony Pictures, although a statement may arrive later at San Diego Comic Con. Some fans might find Tomei's casting an unusual choice, since <a href=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aunt_May>she's much younger than Aunt May is typically portrayed. But to be fair, people are technically saying the same thing bout Tom Holland as Peter Parker - Marvel and Sony could just be starting this reboot at earlier points in these character's lives.

If this casting report is true, it should be very promising - and not just because of Tomei's impressive acting abilities. Rosemary Harris already portrayed a grandmotherly Aunt May perfectly ten years ago with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, followed by Sally Field in the reboot. Making Aunt May a younger woman fits the "Spider-Man in high school" approach Marvel is aiming for, while helping its writers avoid the same ground covered by two previous franchises.

Regardless, we'll have to wait for official word before we know for sure. As it stands, only Spider-Man's star and director were revealed as of last month.

Shades of Winona Ryder playing Spock's mom... too young in appearance for the role. It's not that unusual for a 50 year old to be a 20 year old's aunt, but Aunt May is supposed to be, y'know... OLD.

She may look younger than she is but she does have acting chops to play a good role. Though yes Aunt May is generally thought of as an older lady, a younger version may bring about a bit of freshness to the character. I'm not against it and Marisa Tomei is worth tapping for the role (no innuendo intended).

I mean, she looks young for 50, but they can touch her up with makeup to make her look a bit older I'm sure. I know the original Aunt may was a bit older then 50, but the ultimate version was in her 40's.

I think they could make it work, and honestly it kinda makes a bit more sense for spidermans aunt to be less then 40 years older then spiderman. I now she was an aunt by marriage...and so yes, the age range could work, but she is actually still old enough to be peters great aunt instead of just his aunt (especially if they are going with a teenage spiderman).

She's gaining on 51, and yeah, most red-blooded heterosexual men would clean the bats out of that cave like an exterminator on crack, but 51 ain't exactly young to have a 15-year-old nephew.

She's a bit older looking, but I do agree she is pretty looking.

OT: She's a bit young to portray Aunt May, but if the new Spider-Man movie does intend to portray them as younger characters, then I think casting her for a bit younger Aunt May would be alright with me.

I dunno, I always found it odd that Uncle Ben and Aunt May were depicted as being geriatric, with a kid who was in his teens to early 20's. I mean they always seemed old, even when they let Peter age up from a younger person. I don't know about you guys, but my aunts and uncles were all pretty young when I was in my teens/20's. They were 40ish to 50ish in age, and you can still look very young and healthy in that age range. Not pure grey hair, and wearing clothes like a frumpy grandma. There must have been a HUGE age gap between Ben and May, and Peter's parents, if they were "young" and May and Ben were perpetually senior citizens.

People should keep in mind that Marisa Tomei is 50 (still a looker though.) and this this is going to be a Spider-Man movie based on High School Peter Parker.

Aunt May is mostly just there for comic relief close shave scenes about preserving his secret identity and maybe one sad sap scene where they talk about Uncle Ben. I wouldn't call her one of the most important characters in a Spider-Man movie. Some comic stories make her a little more important, but those are unlikely to be any of the stories this movie will touch on.

Spider-Man, love interest and antagonists ... those are the important characters.

I think the "issue" they're having is the fact that Aunt May is officially going to be "hot" and those complaining probably don't want to see her that way.
