GOG's Windows 10 Compatibility Work Its "Smoothest" Ever

GOG's QA team is working at "full capacity" to ready its retro games for Windows 10.

<a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137744-Microsoft-Windows-10-not-Windows-9>Windows 10 is on its way and, while many are excited for the next version of the famous operating system, others are understandably nervous about the changes it will bring and how well some software will transition to the new OS. Case in point, fans of GOG and its library of retro products have been understandably anxious about Windows 10 and what the site plans to do to ensure its classic games are compatible with it. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/gog>GOG, in turn, has recently spoken out to assure its customers that their favorite titles should work if and when they dive into Windows 10.

Speaking in an announcement, the digital retailer stated that its QA team is currently working "at full capacity" testing the site's retro catalog to make sure they'll all work with Windows 10. "We are very optimistic about July 29th," it said. "We're encountering very few problems and most of those are either resolvable on our end, or likely to get fixed as <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140152-Windows-10-Will-Update-For-Free-On-Pirated-Windows-Copies>Windows 10 nears release. In fact, many games that had issues on operating systems newer than Windows XP once again won't suffer any hiccups on Windows 10." The company would go on to describe its Windows 10 compatibility work as "the smoothest transition to a brand new system that we've ever worked on." It would go on to further caution that "some games may need a patch to run perfectly smoothly" but assured its customers that the required downloads would be made available as soon as possible.

Speaking personally as someone who frequents GOG as a customer, this news is heartening. I was very much disappointed when I bought a new computer a few years back and discovered that some of the game's in my GOG library weren't compatible with Windows 8. Hopefully when I make the switch to Windows 10 I won't have the same problem.

Glad to see they are making good progress. GoG - great stuff : )

As for Windows 10, I am running it now at the office for testing and well... I think I will try to hold off for a while, lots of changes in the UI amongst other things.

Also I wonder how soon a decent DX12 will be released? - Usual motivation to upgrade due to new goodies heh : )

As long as my productivity, bread-and-butter programs work at the release of WinX, I'll be a happy camper. I can wait for everything else to catch up.

What I CAN'T wait for is an OS that actually works. Because up yours, Win8.

OT - it sure is nice to see GoG doing this, but I'm not surprised. Every action they take is beneficial for their customers because they genuinely care about the people who give them money. This is just one more reason to support them as often as possible.

If you're actually using Windows for anything more serious than gaming, never get a new version right away :D

Even if you get windows for gaming it never pays to use the latest version./ Most devs don't design for the latest directX anyway since the know the uptake is very slow.

Honestly this isn't the first time GoG has m,ade a big ado about nothing Windows 10 is to Windows 8 What Windows 98SE was to Windows 95

Words of wisdom, my friend. Words of wisdom. lol

Thankfully, all I really need right now is Word, Excel, Chrome, and Skype, and I'm pretty confident that those four will work on launch day. Part of why I can't wait to upgrade is that my laptop runs pathetically slow and can't handle more than a few programs at a time, whereas my previous laptop - which had Win7 - was a beast that always ran flawlessly (until a capacitor exploded and covered the insides with acid, that is). The real kicker? My current laptop is across-the-board more powerful than the one it replaced. I don't use this laptop any differently than the last. I don't even run any programs that I didn't have on my old laptop.

The ONLY meaningful difference between this computer and the last is that it has more powerful hardware and runs Win8. Why does better hardware run a lot worse than inferior hardware? All I can guess is that it has to do with Win8, because I can't increase the performance no matter what I try, and I'm far from being a computer novice.

Microsoft has a lot to gain by keeping gamers trust in their OS so I would be a lot more worried if GOG was anticipating similar problems to 8. That said, I'm still holding off on the transition.

Still on Windows 7 Ultimate, they need to do more than give W10 away to get me to upgrade. I see only downsides and no benefit. A new Direct X is pointless if not enough Gamers get the OS, as with DX10, not enough updated to Vista to persuade games to abandon DX9, only W7/DX11 was good enough.
They need to drop all the mobile crap, like XBox rubbish, Metro Apps, the App Store and make it a separate desktop OS once more.
The App Store is really are my biggest concern, though now they arn't forcing it on us, they can do so later, at any time.
I just do not trust MS at all.
The sooner PC Gaming moves away from a DirektX reguirment, the better. Nothing else on windows holds me to it.
If Steam can get Linux gamuing up to scratch, I and many others would dump MS in a flash.
