Capcom Apologizes as Street Fighter V Beta is Postponed Indefinitely

"The whole team here is very disappointed that we were unable to deliver a proper beta experience this time."

The Street Fighter V beta testing kicked off to a rocky start, and was taken offline [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/141740-Street-Fighter-V-Closed-Beta-Offline] mere hours after it launched on PlayStation Network. After several days of repeated updates and fixes, Capcom has stated that they intend to keep the beta offline for extended maintenance.

"Capcom offers its sincerest apologies to everyone who participated in this first beta test. While the purpose of a beta is to work out these type of issues, it was very clear that the issues we faced were more severe than we were prepared for," a post on the Capcom-Unity blog [http://www.capcom-unity.com/combofiend/blog/2015/07/27/street-fighter-v-beta-postponed-until-a-later-date] reads. "After three days of testing, while we were making progress and collecting valuable data, we felt the majority of players were not having a good experience, and the best course of action would be to take the servers offline for extended maintenance. We will be postponing our first beta phase until we believe the experience is going to be a positive one for players."

Capcom also stated that there will be "at least three full beta tests prior to the game's launch," with this failed attempt not counting towards that.

"To all of the players that participated and supported us through this initial phase, we cannot thank you enough. We understand how frustrating it is to be so close to playing the game you are excited for, and to not have it working. The whole team here is very disappointed that we were unable to deliver a proper beta experience this time. Thank you so much for your continued support, and we promise that we will have a better experience for you with the future betas."

"We will be sharing more details when available, but for now, we appreciate your patience as we work on solutions to offer the experience that we had intended."

Access to the beta was offered as a pre-order incentive for the PlayStation 4 version of the game, which is scheduled to release in Spring 2016.

Ummmm... a proper beta experience? It sounds like a resounding success. You ran a beta, you found a shit ton of game breaking bugs with the connectivity... that is what they are for. It's not supposed to be a trial period for people to play the game, it's not a demo. It's a beta. This just proves that they don't even know what a beta is for if they are apologizing for a very successful beta.

Thing is most people consider a "beta" to be a pre-launch demo these days, as wrong as that might be I can see why capcom would apologize for failing to deliver that.

The beta was exactly what it was meant to be. They wanted to test online functionality. They discovered a ton of problems and now they are going to fix them. What more could you want from a beta test? In a proper beta, everything that can go wrong, will. Everyone just has a totally skewed perspective nowadays that a beta is some kind of special early access to a finished game.

Here's hoping it does fix up what they need to. They'll almost certainly do another beta to smooth things over and check/prove they got it right.

Question is, what part of the players did they listen to mostly? The hardcore players, or first-time/newer players?

Well, as a beta it did what it set out to do, I mean it was launched primarily as a test for the online and as they found out its busted as all hell and are now fixing it. You shouldn't be apologizing Capcom, you should be thanking the players of said beta for helping you identify the major problems with the games online.

Now then... where's that PC beta?

It's statements like these that have me concerned for the AAA industry. They shouldn't be apologising, they should be thanking the players for helping them find the bugs which is what a BETA is for!!
Dumb AAA industry.

The problem is most people don't understand the point of a beta anymore. Yes it did help them find a number of game breaking bugs and help improve the overall quality of the game. However the fact that the game was in such poor shape might cost them more then a few sales.
