New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Photos Take Us Behind-the-Scenes

The latest issue of Empire magazine gives us a sneak peek at life on the set of The Force Awakens and a preview of their subscriber's cover.

We are still some four months out from the premiere of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. You know this. I know this. Chewbacca knows this. J.J. Abrams definitely knows this, but because he is a bit of a sadist, he's content to tease the everloving sh*t out of us with trailers, Darth Vader [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140693-Star-Wars-The-Force-Awakens-Photos-Show-Chrometrooper-and-Villian-Kylo-Ren] until then.

As such, Empire released several new behind the scenes photos from Episode VII earlier today, as well as both the light side and dark side issues which hit stands this week *and* an exclusive preview of their subscriber's cover featuring none other than the latest Star Wars droid, BB-8. I can practically taste the space dirt.

Check out the photos in the gallery below, then start figuring how we can cryogenically freeze ourselves [https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BZEioALCcAEfKaX.jpg] until the Episode VII premiere.

When discussing exactly how BB-8 came to be, concept designer Christian Alzmann said that, "J.J. wanted something rolling on a sphere, so I tried a lot of different designs developing that idea. He would give direction on the kinds of shapes to use, and that led to a personality for the droid. Of course, the original sketch had very pleasing, round shapes, so you kind of figured it wasn't going to be a very serious or angry character. Ultimately, BB-8 developed out of a back-and-forth process with J.J. where he gave feedback on each iteration of the design."

The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

Real sets. I've missed them so much...

How great is it that we get to have these kinds of pictures again that aren't just a bunch of green screens?

Man, more than anything, I hate JJ's marketing techniques. The constant slow 'leak' is fatiguing.

I like how little is being shown off. Trailers alone completely ruin films these days, and obsessive marketing pre-release can be damaging, too. I know it's Star Wars... but I hope the marketing remains relatively subdued. Nothing in those pics tells us or really shows us anything new, which is perfect.

And that lightsaber continues to look badass.

The light side cover looks like Star Wars to me, but the dark side doesn't looks right to me. Every time I see the white tie-fighters it reminds me of Space Engineers. Specifically how I learned fairly quickly not to paint my fighter designs white if I wanted them to survive more then a few seconds in a fight.

On the plus side, actual sets and actual props so I hope it does well if just to encourage more movies to go that route.

really rare these days to see real sets and no green/blue screen that will end up most of the time as a bad CG effect. say what you want about JJ but this guy at least does put a lot of effort in making things look real. already in his star trek movies you could see how well these sets are made with just needed CG effect that are of course very hard or even impossible to implement it as a set.

I always find it really depressing to see an actor giving their all in a room full of green or blue squares. It is certainly refreshing to see actual sets in a sci-fi movie again.
