No love for King's Bounty? Each game in the rebooted series is a freaking time vampire. It's the kind of game that you sit for half hour and when you go to bathroom you realize two days have passed.

Thought the Total War series would be on here, it's another one of those "just one more turn" games. Never actually played World of Warcraft shockingly enough, just didn't seem like my kind of game.

StarCraft huh? Didn't expect that to be on this list. It was the only one I was addicted to there, kinda.

The Elder Scroll games always fell short one way or another for me, I don't see any point in MineCraft, never could compete with those twitchy AWP users in CS (including I was abused often) plus I'm not a FPS fan, was stuck into Pokemon when it first came out but now I don't see any challenge, can't honestly remember anything from Everquest, the Civilization games feel like Chess, and I always preferred Lineage 2 over Wow.

Super Smash Brothers Melee is the game I'm addicted to most, since I'll play any of you, any time, any day, and still play it like it was new to me.

I'd have to throw XCOM on the list. I never played the old ones, but Enemy Unknown/Within had me going for HOURS and definitely had that "Just one more mission" thing going for it.

I would also probably say Dark Souls. Beat the game like 12 times with different characters and builds, spent way too much time reading item descriptions, then just as much piecing together lore, and then got sucked into the incredibly laggy PVP long enough to get to max rank in the Darkmoon Blade and Path of the Dragon, and Blue Sentinel covenants. Both Dark Souls 1 and 2 took over 500 hours of my life a piece, and I'm eagerly awaiting Dark Souls 3.

You post Civilization but then post a picture of the most casual, least addictive game in the series? Should have used 4.

Also, in terms of games which are addictive, I'd have used Team Fortress 2 (an FPS that I just can't put down) and Gmod, a game which shows us that anything can be done with a game even with a very aged engine running things (I don't care what Facepunch thinks, they better damn well make a Garry's Mod Source 2. Rust is dead and done with, Gmod:S2 would sell like hotcakes).

Played 4 on this list boring is the word I would use rather than addictive.

World of Tanks and World of Warships on the other hand :( so many wasted hours.

You picked Civilization over Master of Orion, specifically Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares? Blasphemy!

Also many on the list are far less addictive than the following: FTL: Faster Than Light, Elite: Dangerous, Rocket League, Warcraft/Warcrat II,Demon's Souls/Dark Souls/Dark Souls 2/Bloodborne, Just Cause 2 and The Fallout Series.

I could list more, but then I'd be here for the rest of the month.

Who do I have to bugger to get Rocket League in here? It cannot be too late, I accept nothing!
Probably because it hasn't been around long enough to call it addictive. If 2 years from now people are STILL playing it, then you can call it addictive.

The moment I saw the title of this article, I said to myself "If WoW isn't on here, this list is invalid."

I was not disappointed. :D

People are bringing up Demon's/Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I don't think they have that plug 'n play/just one more hour appeal of Minecraft or Pokemon, where every waking minute is filled with high-octane opportunity cost. You can always mine a little deeper, catch one more Pokemon. You can accomplish huge things with very little time & effort in these games, which is why we always like to drag them just a bit longer. The pay-off is always just around the corner. Or in the case of Counter-Strike, it has that "one more round" appeal. Whereas the From Software games require quite a lot of time/effort to make progress within the game or achieve anything of substance. Unless you're just farming XP, in which case how would that be any different from any other RPG?

I get the charm of the Souls games, but I think the article is about games that have an inherently addictive MO, not necessarily about the one game you love to play over and over.

I'm not sure how many of these games qualify. I consider a game addictive when it compels me to play it even when I'm not enjoying it. I can play Team Fortress 2 for quite a long period of time, but I'll stop the instant it feels tedious.

Phantasy Star Online was a game I'd play past the point where it was fun. Rare enemies in the game had a MUCH higher chance of dropping the good items. It could be the difference between a 1/180,000 drop chance and a 1/50. As well, every time you warped to the hub and back, the enemies would all respawn. So what you could do is find a room with a lot of them, warp back and forth until you got a rare enemy, kill the enemy, rinse and repeat until you got the item. This would usually take between half an hour and an hour per enemy you found.

That is how I qualify an addicting game. I don't care how long I play a game (within reason) as long as I'm having fun. If I'm not having any fun then there's a problem, and I need to find a better way to use my time.

But V is the BEST of the series, by a large margin. Big difference. And saying it's the least addictive is like saying that Lake Ontario is the "least wet" great lake.

OT: I can't believe you didn't include any roguelikes, like Nethack (or even Rogue). Those things are designed to eat all your time.

Civilization V is what happens when you take Civilization and make it casual, simply to a counter-intuitive degree and 'streamlined' into oblivion. If someone made a chart of the quality of the games in the series, it would reach its peak in Civ 4 and then take a very sudden dive at Civ 5, being the worst since the original after its release and having that title only usurped by the release of Beyond Earth, if one considers Beyond Earth a proper Civilization game and not a spin off.

Civ V is a boring, steaming pile that is to the Civilization series what Supreme Commander 2 was to the Supreme Commander series, with the only difference between the two being that somehow it didn't kill the IP.

Because it was infinitely more fun to play than Civilization IV?

Man, subjectivity. How does it work?

Your idea of fun and mine are very different then, because Civ 5 was, outside of graphics, an objective downgrade, not only from the perspective of gameplay mechanics but also of narrative and design.
