Independence Day Comic Book Announced to Connect 1996 Film to 2016 Sequel

An upcoming comic book will bridge the gap between the 1996 mega-blockbuster and the upcoming sequel for moviegoing audiences.

It will have been 20 years to the day since Independence Day first invaded theaters when its sequel, the aptly-titled Independence Day:Resurgence is released on June 24th 2016. And oh, how those two decades have shaped the lives of the original film's stars: Will Smith went from the likeable, bankable Fresh Prince to a (still likable) scientologist struggling to find a decent project (Hancock excluded), Jeff Goldblum became the darling of indie comedy, and director Roland Emmerich shifted his focus from alien invasions to the gay rights movement [http://www.vulture.com/2015/09/stonewall-yet-another-white-surrogate-project.html].

A lot has changed in the world of Independence Day, to put it lightly, and as such, the creative team behind the box office juggernaut will be releasing a comic book ahead of the 2016 sequel in order to fill us in on what the gang's been up to.

Described as "rich psychological prison drama" (which, huh?) by Titan Comics editor Steve White, the Independence Day issue will "be a golden opportunity to segue nicely into next year's blockbuster sequel by taking the mythos of the original and maybe adding a little darkness to it."

No comic book writers or artists have been announced as of this write-up, but it will be interesting to see how both the comic and the film write-out the first film's protagonist played by Smith, who was removed from the project when 20th Century Fox couldn't meet the $50 million salary he demanded for the back-to-back sequels.

The Hollywood Reporter [http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/independence-day-resurgence-get-comic-826664] managed to get ahold of a brief synopsis of Independence Day: Resurgence, and it's about as vague as it gets.

Twenty years after the events of the first film, the international community recovers and builds up Earth's defenses using technology salvaged from remains of the alien forces. However, the aliens were able to send a distress signal before their final defeat, which results in a new task force of alien ships coming to Earth and threatening the human race once more.

The film stars William Fichtner, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Deobia Oparei, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joey King, Mckenna Grace and returning stars Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Bill Pullman. Roland Emmerich will return as director.

Yeah! Lets darken up the movie where the president pilots a fighter plane to fight against invading aliens that use superlasers to blow up entire cities! Thats what the movie needed!

Wait... what?

Independence day back 20 years ago was a bombastic movie full of top of the notch special effects (for the time atleast) that hadnt been seen before, wich lead to its success.

Nowadays its just one of Roland Emerichs US propaganda boner movies (seriously that guy has a hardon for glorifying the US to a silly extreme) and I dare say wouldnt attract as many people since we see this kind of movie every summer now (Transformers anyone?)

How does "darken it up alittle" improve what is essentially a goofy action movie? Oo

Didn't Bret Spiner's character die in Independence Day?

Haven't seen the movie for some time now, but I seem to recall them checking him after Jayne Cobb gunned down the alien from the autopsy, and he was pretty clearly dead.

And so the wheels of the machinery keep turning. You can't have your cake without 20 fucking tie-ins to cushion the awesomeness of the experience these days.

The cómic will say nothing, show nothing and do nothing. It exists because somebody in a board room said "We can get a cómic out of this" before completely forgeting about it for the rest of his life while middle management threw itself on it.

These days? The original movie had a tie-in comic [http://www.amazon.com/ID4-Independence-Day-Marvel-Comics/dp/B002XR3VI6] as well, back in '96.

I actually have that comic from the link (my dad bought it for me from a news stand on his way home from work, because he knew it was a movie I was looking forward to at the time). I can confirm that it says nothing, shows nothing, and does nothing particularly important to the movie. Everything that happens in it is pretty clearly spelled out for viewers of the movie.

I'm more curious as to how much we'll have managed to improve in twenty years with an influx of alien technology and the entire world focused on rebuilding and improving our defenses and weapons.

It can be assumed that he died, but it wasn't exactly shown as far as I recall, so you could easily say the alien spared him when it used him to speak to the others. Or otherwise just injured/knocked out some of the people there and didn't outright kill them all.

No Will Smith sucks though. I really dislike it when films have to either change the actor for the same character or find some way to write them out. When is the last time he did a good film anyway? I Am Legend?

Wait, so, does this mean that Humanity will be armed with advanced technology and be able to go up against an invading alien force? If so, does this mean we might be getting a good sci-fi war movie?
