Tom Hardy As Wolverine? Hugh Jackman Would Approve!

When Hugh Jackman finally steps down from his X-Men role, he thinks Tom Hardy could be the next Wolverine.

Outside of maybe Patrick Stewart as Professor X, no X-Men casting decision was more inspired than making Hugh Jackman the Wolverine. He just perfectly embodies everything fans love about the antihero Canuck, and was the only character who didn't require a First Class reboot. Still, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139905-Hugh-Jackman-Wants-to-Keep-Playing-Wolverine-Forever>recent statements to the contrary Jackman can't keep playing Wolverine forever, and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/140273-Hugh-Jackman-to-Play-Wolverine-One-Last-Time>plans to retire him after a final 2017 film. But Fox won't stop making X-Men movies if it can help it - so who will take over? Jackman himself has one idea: Tom Hardy, last seen wiping the floor with crazed bikers in Mad Max: Fury Road.

"I haven't really given it a lot of thought, Jackman said. "I've been asked that question a lot, and I'm always like, 'I don't wanna make it too easy on the studio to replace me,' you know? I've still got one more to do. I'm sure they're already talking about it, and there's some actor [they've told] 'shh, keep it quiet but we want you next.'"

But when pressed further, Jackman did offer a name. "He's younger than me for sure," Jackman said, "I think Tom Hardy would be a great Wolverine."

I can't say Jackman is wrong. In Fury Road alone, Hardy proved excellent in action scenes while offering a great performance through minimal dialogue. He's even comfortable with comic book source material - he played as Bane in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, and is attached to the big screen adaptation of 100 Bullets. Once that project is finished, who knows? He might just be available for a superhero role.

Regardless, whoever takes on Wolverine has pretty big claws to fill. Even when Jackman appears in non-mutant movies, we can't help but make Wolverine comparisons. (I still maintain his healing factor means a bunch of dead Jackmans start rising after The Prestige.) But Hardy absolutely has the acting chops and presence to make it work.

Do you agree with Jackman that Tom Hardy should be Wolverine? Or do you have ideas of your own? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Indeed, we definitely don't need another role for Tom where he just runs around grunting.

I have only seen him in a couple of movies, but are there ones where he has actual dialogue (that isn't grunting or filtered through a mask of some sort)?

I doubt he would do this role as it will trap him forever. Its easy money being given a multi film contract but for him, he seems to pick roles that are different. Cant see him wanting to be stuck as Wolverine for the next 30 years.

I don't think it would be a good fit in my opinion. His face is all wrong. Quite frankly, he doesn't look at all bad ass in anything he has ever done. Though, the amount of spoken words as Wolverine matches most of his movies lately.

Hardy has been attached to every major male role ever made ever. The trick with Wolverine is you need a guy who can be convincing as jaded and old regardless of age. Wolverine needs someone who you can buy as this guy who's been around for decades, seeing every major conflict in history and has been affected by it.

Hardy can pull that off. The thing is, I don't really want him to. There are probably dozens of other comic book characters he could play instead. Why do the obvious thing and make an already famous actor portray an already famous comic book character? Look at how Robert Downey Jr. made Iron Man more famous than he's ever been. And it made him famous again. The same can be said for pretty much all of the Marvel characters to an extent, and most of them are played by actors who were made famous by those roles. Hugh Jackman's fame came from Wolverine. They should find a new actor to replace him. Someone not that famous.

Nope, sorry, Hardy's great, but he wouldn't fit the role. His face is simply too pretty and soft. You need someone who can really pull off that hairy beast-man look, which is why Jackman is so great in the role and gets better with age. Henry Cavill I could see working, with his square, pronounced features and black hairiness.

I'd still like to see a slightly chunky, punch-drunk Wolverine, maybe portrayed by, like, Mickey Roarke.

By some strange coincidence, X-Men characters are only interesting when played by gay, lesbian or bisexual actors/actresses from Commonwealth countries, which Hardy isn't. But then Wolverine is boring anyway,

The thing is, he really isnt. But in a way, he's like superman. He can SEEM boring, and he's really kinda hard to do right.

Superman is more or less invincible, he has all kinds of powers, and only one weakness. Pluss he can figuratively one-up even captain america in being a goody-two-shoes. But the interesting thing about him, is that he is actually an alien. He is outside humanity for reasons other than his superpowers. His entire race (more or less) is gone, and he is burdened with this awesome responsibility of essentially being a living jesus. He is a great character, IF you do him right.

Wolverine is similar. Seemingly invincible, regenerating from any wound. Not a lot of interesting superpowers besides that, even if his claws are cool, plus he has a disengaged, I dont give a shit attitude. This might seem boring, but the interesting part about him is why he is that way, his age. How long he has lived, what he has seen, how he is different to other humans because he has lived several lifetimes, and how his prospect of potential eternal life might affect his decision-making process and relationship to other human beings.

This usually takes a back seat to some stellar action-scenes though, and the character is a bit lost in the process.

On topic: I think the wolverine cast suffers from perfection. He has been so good in the role, and so accepted by fans that it is impossible to replace him in any satisfactory way. The best I think hardy could hope for is "yeah, he is good, but he's no Hugh Jackman".

Mr. Jackman has absorbed the role so well that he is like Professor Xavier now, or Gandalf or Magneto. To recast Magneto/Xavier they had to show a version of the characters that was impossible to imagine the old guys playing. Young guys. Its hard to do that with wolverines eternal beard and early middle age look :p

God, I'm getting old. I remember when people were complaining that the last guy they hired to play Wolverine was totally wrong for the part. Now he's the gold standard, and the new guy (well, potential new guy who is not confirmed or even necessarily in the running, just suggested by the old guy) is seeing much of the same.

Why do I have a feeling this will be repeated for any recasting of the part?

Myself? I'm not as married to the X-Men movies or Jackman's Wolverine as most fans seem to be. OR Wolverine in general, in fairness. I don't know that Hardy's right for the part, but I don't think he's necessarily wrong.

Well, I meant in the movies. In the first movie, Magneto is all about improving things for mutants via dodgy means, which is interesting, Rogue is upset cause everyone hates her and many are trying to kill here, which is interesting, Wolverine is angry at people for no reason, hates Cyclops for no reason, and there's a love triangle for no reason. None of which is interesting. This continues for the next 2 movies, and he's not in First Class, Wolverine Origins was even worse. Not seen the other two.

Dunno who he was...*googles*...oh, apparently he was the blue guy that didn't do anything interesting in the 3rd movie.

Hardy is not hairy enough. Sorry, Hardy...come back when you're a furry beast, you pre-pubescent flourescent flower. Or ...implants? I really hope that isn't a thing.

Warrior would be my favorite Tom Hardy film, but if youre looking for his range It would be bronson.
Definitely Bronson. He killed it in there.

Can't say I could see him agreeing to stick to Fox's Wolverine machine, especially if the studio wants a rehash of Jackman's zero-subtlety-one-hundred-percent-angst approach to the character.

Ah, yes. Jackman was truly the manliest of man before being wolverine!

Alternatively we could have accept that Wolverine isn't interesting anymore and focus on some of the other massive roster or characters in the X-Men.

Having said that Hardy is a pretty good choice though he might be a bit young.

That movie actually came out after the first X-Men.

And even all cleaned up... Yes, he's got the eyes, and he's got the chin.
