Jason Vorhees to Return in Friday the 13th Multiplayer Game

Members of film's creative team lending their talents to game seeking Kickstarter funding.

Gun Media has launched a Kickstarter for an officially licensed videogame based on the Friday the 13th franchise of slasher horror films. The game (simply titled, Friday the 13th: The Game) will feature asymmetrical multiplayer for up to eight, where one player assumes the role of Jason and the rest are counselors at Camp Crystal Lake trying to survive the night. The project is seeking $700,000 to complete development, and the game is planned to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

In addition to securing the license for Friday the 13th, several members of the original film's creative team will be contributing to the development, including its director and creator Sean S. Cunningham. Horror effects icon Tom Savini will provide input on creative ways players may be slaughtered and design Jason's appearance, while Kane Hodder will reprise the role of the unstoppable killer in motion capture and composer Henry Manfredini will provide new music.

Counselors will fall into classes with different traits based on classic character archetypes, including the "The Nerd," "The Edgy Guy," "The Jock," and "The Girl Next Door." Counselor players can work together to accomplish goals (such as readying a boat for escape) and create conditions where defeating Jason is possible, but are ultimately concerned with their own survival, allowing for opportunities where outrunning your friends becomes more enticing than outrunning Jason. The Jason player, meanwhile, need only concern themselves with finding and eliminating counselors, with a variety of abilities at their disposal.

As currently designed, Friday the 13th is a multiplayer-only game, though the developer has indicated that a single-player mode will be offered as a stretch goal, should the campaign be successful. This proposed mode would put the player in control of Jason. Additional single-player missions where counselors can be played are being considered as well.

Gun Media first announced this game in 2014 as Slasher Vol.1: Summer Camp, a in-development project clearly inspired by Friday the 13th. Following this announcement, Sean Cunningham (who owns the franchise, in addition to having created it) contacted the developer, leading to its transition from homage to an officially licensed product.

The funding campaign will run until November 13.

As much as I love Friday the 13th I hate the idea of licensed games getting kickstarted...IDK about this one, I think I'll just wait and see what happens

I guess a kickstarter is better than whatever the Evolved guys thought they were doing. That's talking about the asymmetrical aspect, not the licensed stuff, which has a long, shitty history on its own.

I don't actually know enough about the films to say much about whether this will be well received, but what I gathered from the Monster Madness episodes, there isn't much more to it than Jason killing things, Jason killing things in the big city, and Jason killing things in Space.

Good point, I hadn't even considered the asymmetrical gameplay...that's not an easy thing to design, and when it comes to the license itself I really don't know what you could do with it, asymmetrical teams is a great feature that you can boast about but it's not something that you can just easily base a game around, and considering the source material I can't really come up with anything off the top of my head with the exception of maybe going down the Evolve route and having one player play as Jason and the others running away from him? Hoo boy, this kickstarter already sounds like a mess

I can completely understand that reservation, though I also think it's a case-by-case basis thing. While it certainly has potential for a publisher pick-up, the campaign seems opposed to that idea on the basis of not wanting interference from one, and I can respect that. If it's going to be made, though, someone somewhere is going to have to pay for it.

It's in the article. It's 1v7, there will be ways for the counselors to work together to kill Jason or escape.

A Friday the 13th game? Well in the divide between the problems of it being a licensed game and the benefit of it being free of a major publisher and having the people who worked on the movie making it...it's a real coin toss as to whether this game will be good or not.

One massive problem I foresee with this is the issue that "Depth" has (or had i haven't payed it in awhile) in that everybody is going to want to play as Jason as much as possible but will stuck playing the counsellors the vast majority of the time.

If they don't put a significant amount of effort into making the counsellors fun to play then the game might because too many people get annoyed that they don't get to be Jason often enough.

But anyway, good luck to them because this could easily be a great game!

The idea seems quite interesting, I would love to try. But of all the serial killers and monsters that contribute towards the dwindling population of the smug twenty-somethings, fornicating clumsily on my screen, why oh why is it always boring ole straight n' stabby Jason Vorhees? This is the missionary position of movie slasher killlers. With added routine! Imagine a selection of different killers with various abilities, strengths and weaknesses...imagine....

Schlock-master Tom Savini and Kane Hodder are onboard? Might have to throw some dollars their way. I hope they can find a way of avoiding the typical Evolve clusterf*ck the the matches seem to develop into.

I'm not really on board for Kickstarted games, all things considered (*cough* Mighty No. 9 *coughcough*) but this could actually be fun. A 1 vs... I dunno, 8 player kind of game? I guess it would suffer the same problems as Evolve - everyone would want to be the monster and no one would want to fight back against it.

Some bad memories are resurfacing...

Didn't this game come about because there was a kickstarter for a spiritually similar game got really popular, so the studio sent that a cease and desist before announcing this idea after sitting on the license for so long?

But if I'm playing as a counselor, will I be able to fuck the other person and instantly die? If not, then it is not Friday the 13th.

As long as I'm the one playing as Jason, this would be awesome. If they include the Single Player mode where I can just be Jason slaughtering slasher movie archetypes then I'm on board.

F**k off.
Actually, they got the license for free.

Difference with Evolve is that not fighting back is actually a legitimate strategy here, apparently. Killing the solo player is just one option to win, running away is the alternative. And Cooperation is also optional, your way of winning can obviously include sacrificing all teammates to buy time.

At least, that's what I got from the description.

I think the closest you will get is by posting Ascii wangs and boobs in the game's chat system.
